NYCOMEC Unveils Coordinators' Assembly Forum as Part of the GME Discussions!
NYCOMEC unveiled the Coordinators' Assembly Forum last week, the second main section of the GME Discussions Forum, which has been designed to enhance communication and collaborative opportunities among program and institutional coordinators from our member institutions.
The Coordinators' Assembly Forum is now
open for questions, comments, and answers for and from coordinators and support staff representing both AOA and ACGME trainee programs at NYCOMEC member institutions. Coordinators and support staff are encouraged to join the NYCOMEC Coordinators' Assembly and benefit from the forum's services.
The Coordinators' Assembly Forum followed the The Educators' Assembly Forum
debut in the end of March, 2018. Designated Institutional Officials (DIOs), Directors of Medical Education (DMEs), Program Directors (PDs), and Faculty from NYCOMEC member institutions: please feel free to ask your peers educational questions and/or provide your input on GME related matters.
We encourage more Program Directors and Faculty from NYCOMEC member institutions to join the Educators' Assembly and benefit from the additional services provided by the forum.

Reminder to All Graduate Medical Education Faculty and Staff
NYCOMEC continues to assist our member institutions with all documentation requirements related to contracts, registration, completion of training and verification of education. We are currently processing the trainee registration forms and hospital contracts for the new academic year (2018-2019). Please submit a copy of each trainee in a NYCOMEC sponsored AOA or ACGME program completed 2018-2019 NYCOMEC Registration Form and signed hospital contract prior to the start of training. For your convenience, the
2018-2019 Registration Form can be found on our website.
Faculty and Staff are also reminded to notify NYCOMEC of any trainee status changes (i.e. medical leave, resignation, and/or termination). Please contact

On April 26, 2018, the Family Medicine residency program at Nassau University Medical Center (NUMC), institutionally-sponsored by NYCOMEC, received

NYCOMEC Hosted GME Faculty Development Seminar
On Tuesday, April 24, 2018, NYCOMEC hosted a symposium that focused on creating and maintaining a positive learning and working environment for trainees.
David Broder, D.O., President/CEO, NYCOMEC Corp., opened the program by discussing the relationship between trainee's well-being and the quality of treatment they provide to the patients in their care. He emphasized that residents who feel supported and nurtured are better equipped to manage the stresses of residency training.
Ulrick Vieux, D.O., M.S.,
Program Director, Psychiatry Residency, Orange Regional Medical Center presented on Identification & Intervention of At Risk Trainees. He informed the audience on how to recognize and acknowledge the unique stress that trainees encounter, as well as the adverse effects associated with not dealing effectively with stress, and offered solutions and interventions that can help them.
Jeffrey Selzer, M.D.
, Medical Director, Committee for Physician Health presented research that shows that although medical students matriculate with better well-being than their age-group peers, this often reverses and poor well-being persists throughout medical school and residency and into practice. Dr. Seltzer outlined sign and symptom patterns that may indicate substance misuse and reviewed the definitions of misconduct. He also described the role of the New York State Committee on Physician Health and their efforts to assist impaired physicians.

Eric Jamron, D.O., (Resident, Orange Regional Medical Center), and
Mannu Shergill, D.O., (Resident, Orange Regional Medical Center), participated in a panel discussion where each was asked to elaborate on one aspect of training that they felt was challenging.

Their presentation described the legal definition of sexual harassment and included numerous examples of activities within the healthcare environment that became litigious actions under the sexual harassment laws.
Shawn P. Cannon, D.O., FACOI, Chief Academic Officer & DME, Stony Brook Southampton Hospital gave an informative overview of activities implemented at Stony Brook Southampton Hospital which are aimed at fostering a culture of camaraderie and unity among trainees, with special emphasis on recognizing signs of stress/burnout among each other.

Effective July 1, 2018, the Supplemental Educator Form will be discontinued and all osteopathic faculty members must be listed in the ADS Faculty Roster. The new osteopathic faculty member classifications available in ADS make the Supplemental Educator Form unnecessary. For details, click here.

Spring Reporting Window Opens
The spring 2018 Milestones reporting window will remain open until 11:59 p.m. CDT on Friday, June 22, 2018. You may submit Milestones assessments online at any time during the reporting window. No submissions will be accepted after that time.
Soliciting Work Group Volunteers - Internal Medicine and Cardiovascular Disease
The ACGME is beginning work on Milestones 2.0, and is assembling Work Groups responsible for reviewing the current Milestones to determine what, if any, changes need to be made, by specialty.
Volunteers are currently needed for both the Internal Medicine Milestones and the Cardiovascular Disease Milestones work groups.

CMS Releases Revised Guidelines for Teaching Physicians, Interns and Residents.
The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services recently issued its revised booklet for teaching physicians, interns, and residents. The booklet includes information on payment for physician services in teaching settings, evaluation and management (E/M) documentation guidelines, and exception for E/M services in certain primary care settings. TouroCOM Announced the Tracy Tam Memorial Alumni Award for Compassion
The award is in memory of Tracy Sin-Yee Tam, D.O., TouroCOM Class of 2013, who died in the tragic shooting at Bronx Lebanon Hospital in June 2017. Dr. Tam embodied the mission of TouroCOM through regular acts of kindness as a compassionate physician with a special commitment to the underserved.
The award will be presented annually to one second-year medical student at the College's annual White Coat Ceremony.

AOA Is Pursuing ACCME Accreditation
To better serve all DOs, the American Osteopathic Association (AOA) is pursuing Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) accreditation.
The AOA is in the pre-application process with ACCME and plans to submit its initial application by the end of July. A final decision by ACCME could be reached at the end of this year. If the AOA obtains the accreditation the continuing medical education courses offered by AOA will be accepted by American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) and AOA certifying boards.
