Getting (and Keeping!) Students Connected and Engaged in an Online Class

Student engagement is a challenge in any classroom, including an online classroom, for many students and teachers.  Online environments offer tremendous potential to connect, but not all students actively engage in an online class. Lack of engagement and connection leads to missed learning opportunities.  Come discuss practical strategies in the areas of student-teacher communication, instructional choices within the course, feedback, and data analysis to increase student connection to content, course and cohorts as well as increase engagement.
Jeni Day, Presenter
I classify myself as a "teaching nerd" and love to think about, talk about, and write about teaching and learning. I have been teaching science for 20 years both in and out of a traditional classroom, and have 6 years of online teaching experience with NCVPS (North Carolina Virtual Public School) as a teacher and, for the past 4 years, as an Instructional Leader/Coach.  In addition to an amazing education in a rural North Carolina high school, I am a proud East Carolina University graduate, am National Board Certified (and renewed) in AYA/Science, and achieved AIG Certification through an online program with University of Virginia.
