We Need Board Members!
Region 2 Arts Council seeks arts appreciators and artists of all kinds from Hubbard and Mahnomen counties to join our Board of Directors. Board terms last two years and will begin in July.
Eligible applicants must be 18 years or older, have a strong interest in the arts, and have the desire to be an ambassador for Region 2 Arts Council.
This is a great opportunity to understand the workings of the arts granting process, to be more involved with the arts and artists of our region, and to enjoy camaraderie with others who appreciate the arts.

I was a representative for four years. I learned a lot about areas of art that I was not as familiar with, also sharing what I know with others. I met interesting people and interesting ideas. Taking my turn evaluating granted arts projects led me to events I might have otherwise passed by, sometimes enriching my life in surprising ways.

Region 2 Arts Council covers round trip mileage at the current IRS rate for attending board activities. Time commitment involves board meetings, committee work, and 5-8 hours per month reviewing grant applications, along with attending selected funded arts events. Summers are relatively free of board obligations.

Announcing Region 2 Arts Council's Anishinaabe Arts Initiative 2018 Fellows
On April 4, 2018 the Region 2 Arts Council's
Anishinaabe Arts Initiative Council
awarded two
$5,000 Fellowships through
their
Anishinaabe Arts Initiative (AAI) program. The AAI Fellowship
is made possible by the generous support of the McKnight Foundation, and aims to assist the region's most talented Native American artists in their work by awarding financial support to fund creative time and/or arts experiences. This award is for Native American artists residing in Minnesota's Beltrami, Clearwater, Hubbard, Mahnomen, Lake of the Woods, Becker, Roseau, Cass, and Itasca counties.
The 2018 Anishinaabe Arts Initiative Fellows are:

Pamela Iceman,
a Beadworker from Ponemah, Minnesota, taught herself to bead by watching her female elders and practiced until she became skilled at it. Preferring to work in a more traditional or "old style," she uses her inner visions to create purses, wallets, medallions, and bandolier bags. She considers her work to be a representation of who she is, and because it will remain with people for years to come, she creates each with care, love, and attention to detail. Iceman plans to use her Fellowship award to buy supplies and formatting equipment for her beadwork, and plans to expand her medallion-making and other skills.

Robyn Vanwert
is a Painter and Regalia Artist from Redby, Minnesota, whose work focuses on integrating the Ojibwe teachings she's learned into her artwork. She brings her vision to life by assembling components such as birch bark and beadwork, inspired by trends in Ojibwe woodland style as expressed initially by Norval Morrisseau.
Using the Fellowship to create a beaded velvet dress with jingles, and to purchase supplies for other projects, she wishes to show the richness of her vision and her culture.

Region 2 Arts Council awards Community Arts Support Grants
On March 19, 2018 the Region 2 Arts Council Board of Directors awarded
$50,000 through
their
Community Arts Support Grant program,
providing
a measure of funding stability for regional arts organizations to increase the quality and availability of the arts to our communities. This is a two-year award. Annual award amounts are based on each organization's averaged expenses for the past two fiscal years.
The grant recipients included:
Bemidji Chorale
was awarded $3,000 per year to supplement compensation for their
conductor and accompanist, and to pay concert hall rental fees for their spring concerts.

was awarded $6,000 per year to support
performance space rental costs.

Bemidji Sculpture Walk
was awarded $3,000 per year to support compensation for a new
Project Coordinator position, fostering growth and development of BSW.

was awarded $6,000 per year to help support compensation for
the part-time Executive Director position.

Heartland Concert Association
was awarded $4,000 per year to help cover
artist fees and publicity costs for their annual concert series.

was awarded $3,000 per year for
rental of artists' studio space and workshop venue for local established and emerging artists.

was awarded $6,000 per year to support
compensation for their Executive Director position, ensuring leadership stability and continued growth in arts programming.

was awarded $6,000 per year for

was awarded $3,000 per year to

These funds are made available through an appropriation by the Minnesota State Legislature Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund passed by Minnesota voters on November 4, 2008.

Region 2 Arts Council Awards Arts Project Grants
On April 16, 2018 the Region 2 Arts Council Board of Directors awarded $24,675 through their Arts Project Grant program. These grants offer funding for a variety of art projects including costs related to performances or exhibitions, engagement of guest artists, public art projects, and artists-in-residence.
The grant recipients included:
Bagley Area Arts Collaborative
received $1,549 to host a Plein Air Painting workshop with Dan Mondloch using the grounds of the
Clearwater County History Center as the subject matter

Bemidji Concert Series
received $2,311 to host the highly acclaimed jazz and pop band Hornheads at Bemidji State University. (Beltrami County)
Bemidji Symphony Orchestra
received $2,500 to support Romantic, a concert featuring composer Howard Hanson's Symphony No. 2 with former BSO musician and Bemidji native, Eric Haugen on cello. (Beltrami County)
Bemidji Woodcarvers Club
received $2,010 to host the workshop Wildlife Carving with carver Desiree Hajny from October 25 through October 28, 2018. (Beltrami County)
Hubbard County Developmental Achievement Center
received $1,305 to create a community-made Mosaic Mural with artist Marsha Wolff at the Hubbard County Developmental Achievement Center. (Hubbard County)
Nemeth Art Center received $2,500
to host an exhibition of Julie Buffalohead's paintings and drawings, and Nathanael Flink's paintings and sculptures from May 3 through July 14. (Hubbard County)

to host a sculptural installation exhibition by former Bush Fellow, Alexa Horochowski. (Hubbard County)
Northern Light Opera Company
received $2,500 to host NLOKids Theater Project, in which Park Rapids and Pine Point area children work together for three weeks on a theater project which includes writing, composing, acting, and singing. (Hubbard County

received $2,500 to host the storytelling competition, the Great American Story, on September 22, 2018. (Hubbard County)

Northern Minnesota Songwriters Meeting

The Northern Minnesota Songwriters group was recently formed by a couple of songwriters who live too far from the Twin Cities area to attend the regularly scheduled meetings of the Minnesota Association of Songwriters. Wanting something similar close enough to home for them to participate, they contacted several other songwriters in the northern Minnesota area and also formed a Facebook group to facilitate communication and planning. The stated purpose of the group is "For songwriters in north central Minnesota to communicate and plan activities, support each other remotely, and socialize."

Comfortable, durable and made to be used. Make your own pack basket using hand-pounded black ash splints.
This class has two options you can choose from:
1. Come Saturday and Sunday only and use material that has been pre-prepared for you
OR
2. Come Friday, Saturday and Sunday and prepare your own. Learn how to pound the log to get your material, then cut the splints to width using a cutting jig.
Class will take place May 5-6 or May 4-6 (depending on which option you choose) and run from 9:00-5:00 each day.

Textile Center is pleased to announce the 2018/2019
Jerome Fiber Artist Project Grant application period is now open.Textile Center partners with Jerome Foundation in selecting emerging fiber artists based in Minnesota for individually designed project grants that inform and advance artistic development in the creation of new work.
Three $6,000 project grants will be awarded. The grant awards include exhibition planning and implementation, with a final show of the artists' new work from May 20 - July 27, 2019.

The City of Bemidji's Public Arts Commission Selection Committee requests proposals
from emerging or established artists or artist teams for a public art project. The City proposes to hire an artist or artist team to create a design for a crosswalk.
The artist will design and fabricate a plywood stencil for the City to use to paint the crosswalk at Third Street and Beltrami Avenue.
Submit a CD with a minimum of 10 work samples demonstrating recent work that is relevant to the
project scope and budget. Files must be in a jpeg format and no larger than 1920 on the longest side.

The Great American Story

The Park Rapids Lakes Area Arts Council is sponsoring the third annual Great American Story contest for oral storytellers. Stories are now being invited from Minnesota storytellers. Judges will narrow the selections to four finalists who will perform the best-told stories at an event Saturday, Sept. 22 at Calvary Lutheran Church in Park Rapids.
