FEATURED STUDENTS: District Spelling Bee Winners
Students from across the District converged at the Administration Center on Monday, April 23, to compete in the District Spelling Bee. The contest was for grade-level winners from elementary and middle schools, and was divided into two divisions: one for students in grades 1-5 and one for students in grades 6-8. After two tie breakers, the top spellers in Division I were as follows: first place - Yasmine Othman, fourth-grader at Orenco; second place - Vir Ranpara, fifth-grader at Lenox; and third place - Brian Nelson, fifth-grader at North Plains. Division II results were in after just one round of competition, with first place going to Amy Miners, seventh-grader at Poynter. In second place was Charles Clem, sixth-grader at Imlay; and in third place was Darrien Rogers, sixth-grader at Quatama. First place winners will go on to compete in the Regional Spelling Bee, hosted by the Northwest Regional ESD, on Thursday, May 10. Winners from that round of competition will compete in the Oregon Statewide Spelling Championship at the Oregon State Fairgrounds on Friday, Sept. 1. Congratulations to all of our top spellers!

Bilingual Seal Recipients
|
|
Thirty-two Hilhi seniors and their families celebrated the accomplishment of
earning HSD's Bilingual Seal at an event held in the Hilhi Library on Friday, April 13. Students who are bilingual or who participate in the District's Dual Language Program are eligible to receive the Bilingual Seal after successfully completing a portfolio demonstrating their proficiency in reading, writing, speaking, and listening in both English and Spanish and receiving high enough marks through the rigorous scoring process. Most students who earn the HSD Bilingual Seal also earn the state of Oregon's Seal of Biliteracy. We congratulate our Bilingual Seal recipients and wish them the best as they take sail in our global society!
