Allan here at the SVA Principal desk. I've had a couple posts in a row that have been pretty academic and thick, so today I just wanted to pass along a simple message of love.
At The Academies, we love your kiddos. We love their whole being, faults and quirks included. We love these little humans that will, soon enough, be in charge of our world.
Our hope is that we are able to show you that love through our interactions with and attention to your scholar. We hope that you feel welcomed as parents and family to be part of this schooling experience with us. We hope to join together to work toward the best outcomes for your child, academically and as a whole human being.
Please know that my door is always open and that I very much appreciate communication from parents, whether it be comments, concerns or compliments. It is through that open communication that we are best able to find the right paths to work with each scholar.
I invite you to continue to be part of this experience with your children. You are most welcome here.

Mr. Anderson, a rotary volunteer, has been incredible! He is working with our Blue Oak K-3rd graders, providing 30 minute
percussion
lessons every Wednesday. Students at Blue Oak are having a blast learning
about rhythm and beat, along with the classics like "We will rock you" by Queen.

Blue Oak Student has a Future in Politics
Caleb Ceja was sponsored to attend the 3rd Fred Davis Annual dinner on Saturday, March 16, 2019.
He got to meet to Malia M. Cohen, who serves as a member of the California State Board of Equalization representing the 2nd district.
Caleb
also got to meet Betty Yee who is currently our State Controller.
Caleb told Malia & Betty that his love for politics came from his teacher Mrs. Johnson when she taught him about the government for their PBL. His goal is to become a senator when he grows up.

Hands on Science
Blue Oak third graders have been learning about genetics. This week they extracted DNA from strawberries!

SVA 3rd & 4th Service Learning
In conjunction with their current PBL project and service learning opportunity, SVA's 3rd & 4th graders are invited to sing De Colores to open the annual Cesar Chavez Legacy March. Afterward, all are welcome to join the procession which commemorates Chavez' march to Sacramento, to the community celebration.
Our scholars have discussed the issues Mr. Chavez fought to change and the impact of his work. Each student entered an essay contest about Mr. Chavez' methods and impact. The winners of that contest will be celebrated and cash awards distributed at the event.

BOA Code Club Builds Desktop Computers
First and second graders in Blue Oak's Code Club built low-cost ($40) computers using Raspberry Pis and recycled monitors. The students, led by teacher Gloria Cazarez, will use the new machines to further explore programming. A big thank you goes out to the CA Table Grapes Foundation Grant that provided all the funding needed!

SVA Campus Beautification Day
Come join us on March 30th, 2019, from 9:00AM to 1:00PM to help Green Up SVA!
Our Middle School is organizing this Beautification Day as part of their service-learning activities this year and coordinating with PTO to host this event.
The current priorities for this work day include cleaning out and amending garden beds, removing stinging nettle, and more.
Parents and students are encouraged to attend and lend a hand.
Bring a shovel, a bucket, gloves, and sturdy shoes.

A day at the shooting range with gun safety training and instruction. Two and a half hours of range time with unlimited shooting followed by a BBQ dinner. 100% of ticket sales benefit SVA PTO.

Dress Code Reminder
A quick reminder going into the spring trimester, please refresh yourself on our dress code policy and expectations. You can view the easy to ready 1-page guide

Our biggest issues are with items that are out of color range, have brand name logos, there is a special wash on or holes in jeans, and students wearing tights/leggings. For the most part, these issues are minimal and rare. That said, the more you can help us out at home, the less we need to address your student about these items at school, allowing us to stay focused on education.
The purpose of the dress code is to level the playing field for all and to keep our focus at school on learning. Thank you for your help with this! We are also happy to help make sure that you have dress code compliant cloths for your students. If you need help with this, please do contact our school offices and ask for Mr. Benton or Mrs. Stinson.

BOA Offers Parent Training Workshop
All are welcome to attend this workshop hosted by Dana Stinson at Blue Oak Academy.
In this workshop, Mrs. Stinson will teach families about
TOOLBOX™
, the social emotional curriculum piloted at Blue Oak Academy this year, and slated for roll out at Sycamore Valley in 2019-20.
TOOLBOX is a Kindergarten through 6th grade program that supports children in understanding and managing their own emotional, social, and academic success. The foundation of TOOLBOX is 12 human capacities that reside within all of us. Through its simple and profound metaphor of Tools, TOOLBOX brings forward a set of skills and practices that help students access their own inner resilience at any time, in any context.

SCICON Wildflower BBQ
On Sunday, April 14, from 11:00AM until 4:00PM, the Friends of SCICON will be hosting the 59th Annual SCICON Barbecue and Wildflower Festival.
All students, families and the general public are invited to SCICON for this beautiful event. The wildflowers will be at their peak with hundreds of them in bloom. The SCICON staff will be on hand to lead wildflower hikes, bird watching hikes, and nature hikes. The museum, planetarium, observatory and Tree Nursery will be open all day. Natural resource agencies will
staff many different displays. Musical groups from local schools will provide live entertainment. There is no charge to attend for the day.
A delicious meal is provided by the Friends of SCICON with a traditional deep pit barbecue. Meal prices are $15 for adults, $10 for seniors (60 & over) and $5 for children (12 years and under.) For more information, please call the SCICON office at (559) 539-2642.
