ANNOUNCEMENTS
First-year choral ensembles Norsemen and Aurora will present a concert at 7:30 p.m. Friday, May 4, in the Center for Faith and Life, Main Hall. Aurora's portion of the concert features music from around the globe. They will be joined by members of the Symphony Orchestra, pianist Anne Wilson and Nicholas Shaneyfelt. Norsemen will perform works by Franz Schubert, Sten Källman, Gwyneth Walker and George Mead. Collaborating with Norsemen is a student brass quintet coached by Rebecca Boehm Shaffer.  

Killing'ot Lembikas will present, "When Pastoralism Meets Conservation: Challenges to the Maasai Way of Life."  Sunday, May 6 at 7 p.m. in Valders 206. Lembikas has worked with Luther students and faculty as a cultural guide and interpreter for J-Term programs in Tanzania. He will explain the role of pastoralism in Maasai culture and how conservation reserves pose a challenge to the Maasai livelihood with emphasis on the violence surrounding land conflicts near his home area.
 
Lab Orchestra, sponsored by FMEA, meets for the last time this Saturday, May 5, from 1-1:30pm in the Jenson Noble Orchestra Room! Come learn a string instrument of your choice (violin, viola, cello, bass), taught by a Lab Orchestra mentor. No experience is necessary and this event is open to students of all majors. Now accepting nominations for Student Organization Awards!
Student Activities Council and Student Senate will present winners in each category with a Martin Luther Bobble Head Statue, (500 Year Reformation Special Edition.) Categories include: Outstanding Student Leader, Outstanding Student Organization, Outstanding Service Project, Outstanding Event, and Outstanding Student Organization Advisor. Nominations Due: Monday, May 7.

Saq Nadeem,  LC '98, 2013 Illinois Small Business Person of the Year and founder of Paradise 4 Paws ("P4P"), shares his views on entrepreneurship and the pet industry. P4P has been featured in the New York Times, USA Today and The Today Show. Called one of the "Coolest Businesses in America" by Business Insider, P4P has been profiled in Business Week, Chicago Tribune, and more. Saq shares his story Monday, May 7, 6:30 p.m., Olin 102.
 
The Diversity Center will have a Decorah Walmart shopping shuttle running from 2:00-5:00 p.m. Saturday, May 5.  This is open to all students and there is no charge, but reservations are requested, please register here.

Community on the Commons May 1 -- Warmer weather is here! Gather with Luther friends for a root beer float at Bentdahl Commons from 5-6:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 1, as a lead-in to the Ted Koppel event. The first 50 students to show up in their Ted Koppel t-shirts will receive a coupon for a tasty treat from Sunnyside Cafe! Sponsored by the Center for Ethics and Public Engagement and the Center for Sustainable Communities.

In her newest book, "The Virtual Body of Christ in a Suffering World" Deanna Thompson, professor of religion at Hamline University, focuses on the potential of the digital revolution to help us better care for one another during the worst times of our lives. Thompson will discuss her new book and these ideas during a guest lecture at 4 p.m. Friday, May 4, in Valders Hall of Science Room 262.

Michael Smith, Luther College assistant professor of music, will give a faculty tenor and bass trombone recital with collaborating pianist Du Huang, Luther professor of music, at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 2, in the Jenson-Noble Hall of Music, Noble Recital Hall.

Fangye Sun, violin, will perform a guest recital at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, May 10, in the Noble Recital Hall of the Jenson-Noble Hall of Music.

The Luther College Theatre Department will present David Adjmi's play "Marie Antoinette" at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, May 3; Friday, May 11; and Saturday, May 12; and 1:30 p.m. Saturday, May 5, in the Jewel Theatre of Luther's Center for the Arts. Tickets for the performance are $10 an can be purchased at the Ticket Office on online.

The Luther College Jazz Band will perform their spring concert at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, May 3, in the Center for Faith and Life, Main Hall.

The Luther College Dance Department will present their spring show "Soil Turning" at 7:30 p.m. Friday, May 4; Saturday, May 5; and Thursday, May 10, and at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, May 12, in the Jewel Theatre, Center for the Arts.

Using anecdotes from her personal life to encourage readers to become actively engaged citizens and human beings, Luther College Associate Professor of English Amy Weldon has released a new book, "The Hands-On Life: How to Wake Yourself Up and Save the World." Released in late February 2018, the book is available from major retailers, wipfandstock.com and the Luther College Book Shop.
