Incoming President's Message - Karen Miller, CFP®, CPFA
Karen Miller
I would like to first start off by acknowledging Matt Page, Jenny Hood and all of the past presidents who have shown dedication to the profession and our chapter, and provided a framework for leadership so that I can step in and help guide our organization in 2019. However, I definitely won't be doing this alone and want to thank the 2018 and 2019 Boards, our strategic partners and our members.

We met in November to discuss our past achievements and create our strategic plan for the year. Some of the highlights are:

Advocacy:
Welcome to our new Advocacy Director Claudia Kane. She'll be keeping you updated with FPA's efforts to make our voice heard locally and on Capitol Hill. Do you realize that many government representatives do not have a clue what financial planning is? Do you also know that they wanted to tax the services we practitioners provide to clients? Luckily that was quashed. If you want to help educate our representatives, you'll have the opportunity to do so by participating in Sacramento Advocacy Day in March and other events.

Career Development:
Welcome to Daryl Wong, our new Career Development director. Among other endeavors, he'll be participating in our chapter's upcoming partnership with CSU, Sacramento and the creation of a new advisory board for their Personal Financial Planning (PFP) program. Also, a big Thank You to Debbie Grose for reaching out to the College of Business Administration at CSUS and getting the ball rolling on this. Our first meeting is in mid-January, so expect to hear updates throughout the year. As Debbie said in her email " the possibilities are endless and we have a wonderful opportunity to influence the program/curriculum, cultivate the next generation of planners, and make a wonderful contribution to our amazing profession... not to mention bolster our teams."  Continue reading here

Outgoing President's Message - Matthew Page, CRPS®, CFP®, CAP®
I hope everyone reading this message has had a great 2018 and will have an even better 2019.

As I reflect on the past year, I am stunned at how quickly the time has gone by. It's seems as though I just tentatively put my name into the hat for President-Elect. As the saying goes, "Time flies when you're having fun." Which is a succinct way to describe what serving as President of our FPA chapter has felt like. Even though the time was enjoyable, there was one thing that I wasn't able to accomplish. One of my goals for 2018 was to increase membership, which has been fairly flat the past few years (our chapter has approximately 190 members). Reflecting back on 2018, I realize that increasing membership is not something a few people can accomplish in a year. Our members have a diverse set of interests that need to be met. Some members are very focused on C.E., while others are interested in programs and some are here for the discounts ( click here for more information about discounts). We have tried to reach out to our members beyond C.E., programs, and discounts with study groups and networking events. For myself, all of these previously mentioned items are of interest to me, which is probably why I have been so involved with our chapter. It's also why as a Past-President, I plan to continue to be involved with FPA for as long as the group will have me around. My hope going forward is that we are all ambassadors for FPA and will encourage our colleagues to join, vendors to sponsors and speakers to present.

Finally, I would like to again thank Karen Miller for serving as our 2019 chapter President along with the rest of the 2019 board. I am excited to see what 2019 brings for all us.
President-Elect - Landon Tymochko, MBA, CFP®
Welcome to the new year! I'm excited to be stepping into the role of President Elect for our chapter, and I want to thank every one of you who is a member of the Financial Planning Association (FPA) as a member, strategic partner, chapter leader, or occasional participant. If you are reading this newsletter, it means that you are probably a pretty engaged member of the financial planning community, and that is exactly what we need to continue growing as a profession and an association. These are pretty exciting times to be part of this profession, and it is critical that we have dedicated planners and partners like you to be engaged in the changes that are happening all around us.

I'm sure most of you have by now heard something about the OneFPA Initiative that is currently underway to fundamentally re-structure the organization of the FPA. Regardless of your opinion about whether it is a good idea or a bad one, the most important thing, at least in my mind, is that you try to become as fully informed as possible. Try to listen as much as possible, but also make sure that your voice and opinion is heard by the leaders who have responsibility to shepherd our organization through the change process.

Remember, being a leader when things are changing is hard. While you may not agree with the direction or decisions that have been made, please keep in mind that our leadership is having to deal with many varying viewpoints, perspectives and opinions. All of them together is what makes this such a vibrant and wonderful community. That is not to say that those with responsibility deserve to have a free pass. Our job as members is to participate, communicate, help, and to hold them accountable. That applies to our own chapter board as well, and we welcome you to provide us your input regarding how things can be improved, even while we are managing the broader changes happening on the national level.

Thank you for being part of this community, and I look forward to seeing you at many of the great events planned for 2019!

IT'S FPA ADVOCACY DAY IN SACRAMENTO! TUESDAY, MARCH 5TH

You should have received your invitation to register for FPA's signature event, Advocacy Day in Sacramento. As we are THE chapter here in Sacramento, let's show our support for our businesses and each other.

Have you ever wondered about our advocacy platform? Do you realize how many bills have been successfully squashed with the help of FPA California and their advocacy efforts? How would you have liked to charge and pay taxes on your services as a Financial Advisor or Planner?

This is our time to meet our legislators, develop relationships, learn what they know (and don't know!) about our businesses and who we are, and help them understand how we represent the financial well-being of their constituents.

Career Development - Daryl Wong, CFP®
Hi, I'm Daryl and I'm the new FPA Director of Career Development for 2019.  I've been in the industry for over 15 years and am very fortunate to have been surrounded by a great group of colleagues, mentors, and opportunities throughout the years.

Our industry can be tough with sometimes very high barriers to entry when it comes to experience, expertise, career paths, building and managing your business, and building your network to contribute and give back to the community.  Often times it can be intimidating especially when there's no one to turn to for help.

As the Director of Career Development, my goal is to share my experiences to help guide those looking to enter the world of Financial Planning and to find ways to expand the FPA's footprint with NexGen.

I look forward to what 2019 has in store for us and welcome any ideas and insights from all. I can reached at [email protected]
