Special Olympics are - well, very special!

Carrollton High School hosted the 2018 Spring Special Olympics Tuesday morning. Albeit it was a little chilly, all participants from around the county were motivated by adoring fans and made memories to last a lifetime. Even Hector the Mighty Trojan was there to encourage the athletes. Thank you to all of the volunteers and congratulations to all of the athletes on a job well done! See more photos on  FACEBOOK.

Pathways ranged from engineering and architecture to graphic design and broadcasting. University of West Georgia, West Georgia Technical College and the Carroll County Chamber of Commerce hosted this outstanding event last Friday for the students of Carroll County.
Newbern earns creative writing accolades
Carrollton High School senior Jackson Newbern was awarded first place in the Georgia Poetry Society's Marel Brown Poetry Contest for Grades 9 through 12 for his poem "Bright."

Jackson's poem was deemed the best among all high school entries in the state. He will be awarded the first place certificate and a cash prize at the society's annual meeting at the University of Georgia on April 28. With this honor, Jackson will become a published author before graduating high school with his poem featured in the GPS annual anthology, "The Reach of Song."

Jackson's writing prowess has been recognized on several fronts. He was also was recently awarded the 12th grade winner for his Laws of Life essay sponsored by the Rotary Clubs of Georgia. Last year, Jackson was named a regional winner in the Georgia Young Authors competition. Jackson's creativity also spills over into the performing arts, where he is active in the CHS choral and dramatic arts programs.
Rooks selected for Washington Youth Tour
Carrollton High School junior Rebekah Rooks is one of three local students selected for Carroll Electric Membership Cooperative's Washington Youth Tour leadership program.

The all-expenses paid Washington, D.C., experience is Georgia's oldest leadership program for teens and is designed to teach students about U.S. history, the role of government and the importance of community and public service.

The youth tour is an incredible opportunity for local students to meet members of Georgia's congressional delegation and visit historical points of interest in Georgia and the Nation's Capital, according to Taylor Key with Carroll EMC.

"The Washington Youth Tour affords an outstanding group of future leaders the opportunity to explore our nation's capital," she said. "The Washington Youth Tour gives students the ability to make life-long friendships, discover a career path and come back with a lifetime of memories."
Senior letters deadline is Friday, April 13
In this photo, CHS 2017 graduate Levi Rider waves goodbye to his alma mater as he prepares to cross the stage for his diploma.

Before you know it, the Class of 2018 will be gone, too. Don't miss the opportunity to contribute to a memorable sendoff for these graduates by writing a senior letter to the ones you know.

You may drop off letters at the CHS front office or mail them to:
CHS Senior's Name,  c/o Mrs. Jeanne Swindle/ CHS Student Council,  201 Trojan Drive,  Carrollton, GA 30117.

Please use standard letter-size envelopes, and do not include bulky enclosures or packages. Include the student's first and last name on the outside of the envelope. Because of volume and time constraints, email messages will not be included.

In order to process the letters in time, the deadline is Friday, April 13.  The letters will be distributed following the annual Senior Breakfast on Friday, April 20.

Time flies, and it is hard to believe that, very soon, these seniors will be called alumni!
A stellar evaluation and performance

The Carrollton High School Women's Chorus earned straight "1's," also called "superior" ratings, at the Large Group Performance Evaluations Tuesday at the Carroll County Performing Arts Center. This is the highest rating a choral group can earn and the chorus earned them in both performance and sight reading. The chorus performed Mozart's "Lacrymosa" and "Hello Girls" by Pfautsch.  The group was under the direction of CHS Choral Director Julie Lowry and was accompanied by Terri Fazio on the piano. CONGRATULATIONS on continuing this tradition of excellence!
Motivating talk promotes 'Sky is the Limit'

Douglas County author Kim Eldredge spoke to Carrollton Elementary School second and third graders Thursday morning about her book, "The Sky is the Limit," a publication that seeks to inspire elementary-age children to believe in themselves and also to instill a love of learning. Taking inspiration from and dedicating the book to her father, who worked on the Lunar Module Project prior to moving to Georgia, Eldredge shared that she hopes it the kind of book that parents and children can read over and over, much like "The Little Engine That Could" inspired earlier generations. During her visit, Eldredge encouraged the students to work hard and never stop striving to be their very best.

Get preschoolers hooked on chapter books

Now, you might be thinking, "Why would you read a chapter book to a preschooler? Here's why:

#1 - Getting hooked on a great chapter book builds a desire and thirst for reading.

#2 - Reading and connecting over books is a wonderful bonding experience.

#3 - Reading aloud is a wonderful way to help kids expand their vocabulary.

#4 - Be selective: Not all chapter books lend themselves to a great read-aloud experience.            Find books with shorter chapters and lots of dialogue.

#5 - If the book isn't working for you or your child, it is perfectly fine to abandon it.
