Iceland International Trip Parent/Student Meeting
Tuesday,  May 1 at 6:00 PM

Plans for an international trip to Iceland in early June of 2019 are underway! Energy students traveled there two years ago and had a trip of a lifetime. Iceland produces 100% of it's electricity and heat from renewable energy sources and students will learn about this and more first hand! Join us on Tuesday, May 1st at 6:00 PM in the BP Spot to learn more about this opportunity. Students and parents should plan to attend if they are interested in participating in the trip. This opportunity is open to students who are current 9-11th graders and who have not had any level three infractions. If you have any questions, please contact Noelle MacGregor at [email protected]

Is Your Junior Student Our Next Posse Scholar?
Attend the Posse Informational Meeting - Tuesday, May 1 at 6:45 PM

The Posse Foundation is a non-profit organization that is currently seeking juniors with extraordinary academic and leadership potential. We will host a student/parent information session for interested families on Tuesday, May 1st at 6:45 PM. Selected Posse Scholars receive full tuition scholarships and other support at one of the following six schools: Texas A&M, Wellesley, UVA, Colby, Carleton, and Bryn Mawr. It's a wide range of schools to appeal to a variety of students. Energy Institute currently has five Posse Scholars! Posse loves our students and thinks they stand out in their dynamic interview process which includes a large group interview where students work in teams to solve problems. If your current junior is interested in becoming a Posse Scholar and landing a full tuition scholarship we highly recommend attending this meeting! If you have any questions, please contact Noelle MacGregor at  [email protected].
PARKING UPDATES - SOUTHMORE CAMPUS
As we are getting closer to the move in date at our new campus on 3501 Southmore, we wanted to make sure our students and families are aware of the new parking policies for the campus. There will be NO street parking around the Southmore campus. This year, we have quite a few students who drive to school but do not park in the student lot. Next year, that will not be an option. We have plenty of parking spaces on campus to accommodate all of our students! In order for students to park on campus next year, students will need to:
  1. Complete the student parking application
  2. Pay the student parking fee
  3. Provide proof of insurance, with the student listed as an approved driver on the vehicle.
Without that documentation, students will not be allowed to drive to school. We appreciate your support in getting that documentation taken care of this summer in order to ensure that all drivers have the appropriate paperwork to park on campus at the beginning of the school year!

Thursday, May 3 at approximately 7:00 PM

Following the senior Engineering Design Exhibition Energy will hold its annual Senior Honors Night. Although all students are welcome to attend, students who will be recognized will receive a printed invitation this week. The only exception to this is that students who are being recognized for their engineering projects; they will find out that night after judging. If you have any questions, please contact Noelle MacGregor at [email protected]

On Sunday, April 22nd, the Energy Converter Club participated in the Growing Up Recycling Cart Decorating Contest at Discovery Green. The members decorated a recycling cart using recyclable materials in order to encourage children to and raise awareness for recycling. For five weeks, the club brainstormed and decorated the cart. For brainstorming, the club looked at different concerns present in the environment, as well as what themes would appeal to a younger audience. They decided to use the movie "Finding Dory" as their theme to focus on the environmental concern of solid waste pollution in the ocean. After five weeks of hard work, the club completed their cart and went to the contest to present it. There, the team won second place and was awarded $150 for the Energy Converters Club. Among their audience was Mayor Sylvester Turner who had heard of what the members did with their recycling cart. Energy congratulates the Energy's Converters and awaits their next project!

On Wednesday, April 25th, Energy student from Cohort 5 visited Weatherford, one of the world's largest multinational oil and natural gas service companies. Organized by the Independent Petroleum Association of America (IPAA) and Weatherford, the event gave students the chance to see the Weatherford Research and Development, Engineering, Technology, and Training Center to learn about current oil and gas technologies. Students also met with industry professionals and participated in technology demonstrations. Weatherford focuses on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) and educating students aspiring to be in the field of energy. On previous occasions, the IPAA/Weatherford partnership has helped students be more prepared for life during and after college through externships and field trip opportunities. Additionally, students had the chance to meet mentors who work in various energy fields (rotating to different ones periodically), and they have learned about the operation of oil and natural gas wells. Overall, this whole learning experience allows students to gain insight into the energy industry.

On Thursday, April 27th, thirty-six seniors toured the Federal Reserve with the senior Government and Macroeconomics teacher, Mr. Lamb. During this trip, Mr. James Colunga of the Human Affairs Department, showed the students the ins and outs of the federal reserve system. Students learned that the primary role of the bank is to provide currency to financial institutions across the southern Texas region. The students also got a first hand experience with one of the building's key features: its security. Guests and personnel are thoroughly checked with the help of metal detectors, but this is not the only security measure. With bullet resistant windows and cameras diligently checking for explosives under money-carrying armored trucks, the Federal Reserve of Dallas Houston Branch has the most modern measures of security out of all the other federal branches in the nation. Furthermore, the board of directors is composed of prominent, local figures in fields such as oil & gas, investment, and aerospace. Each member provides data and knowledge about their area of expertise in order  to shape the monetary policies and interest rates of the federal reserve based on how well or bad the combined economy of these fields are doing within the local and international market. As the AP Government and Macroeconomics tests are approaching, this was a great learning experience for the seniors.

On Saturday, April 28th, EMERGE had their first orientation of the year for the incoming sophomore inductees. After a thorough application process and interview with a program coordinator, Energy's new EMERGE students include Madie Baez, Jesse Ramirez, Ali Ramazani, Elliot Salas, Michael Zacarias, Daniel Moreno, Cynthia Gomez, and Nicolette Beguerisse. EMERGE will prepare these students, along with 275 others, for scholarships and the college application process. This weekend, students from across the district learned about the program and everything it offers, such as SAT prep, college tours, and assistance with scholarship essays. Students were introduced through quick icebreakers and signed up for their upcoming weekend trip to Camp Olympia in order to get to know their peers. EMERGE has over 600 students in college and this year that number will rise to 1,000. Over the summer, alumni will go on a college immersion trip to the Northeast in one of four locations: Upstate New York, Boston, or Pennsylvania and southern New York. On Saturday, April 28th, Energy held its second annual prom. It was a once-in-a-lifetime event, and students dressed extravagantly for the "Enchanted Forest" evening. This event was a huge success as our students danced the night away. Thanks to all of the parents and teachers who worked tirelessly to make this night possible. With over 100 people in attendance, it was definitely a night to remember. Finally, congratulations to Brianna Leon and Gabe Cruz for winning Prom King and Queen!

Last Saturday, April 28th, Energy students had the opportunity to participate in the Communication, Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics Challenge ( C-STEM ) hosted by the Houston Health Museum. The C-STEM Challenge is a competition in which students from different schools solve a series of problems designed by industry professionals. The event was conducted in a project-based learning manner while also aligning with the national standards. This year, the competition theme is titled, "Living Smarter: Powering a Sustainable and Productive Future" , and the activities focused on the present and future management of resources and preservation of the global environment. Overall, Energy placed first in all the categories they participated in, earning the Euclid Award and winning in Innovation,  Mural, Sculpture, Quiz Bowl, Photography, and Robotics. Finally, congratulations to Julia McDaniel for winning C-STEM Student Ambassador for High School and Ms. Lockhart for winning STEM Teacher of the Year Award!
On Friday, April 20th, sophomores from Cohort 3 presented their finished websites from the "True Facts about DHMO" project in a gallery-walk exhibition. Over the past few months, students have been answering the driving question, " How can we, as rhetors, chemists and informed citizens, create a website to enact systematic change in our society?" In Chemistry, the sophomores investigated the hazardous effects of everyday chemicals, including dihydrogen monoxide (DHMO), which is more commonly known as water. In English, students learned about the three argumentative appeals: ethos, pathos, and logos, and how to apply them in a persuasive setting. Applying these concepts in creating websites, the students attempted to change the public perception of their assigned chemical substance. During the exhibition, students, teachers, and administrators from across the campus, came to view their websites and learn about the interesting risks associated with household chemicals.
This week, we would like to spotlight our exemplary Spanish teachers: Senora De Leon and Senora Sandberg! Both are outstanding teachers who encourage students to expand their language insights by learning Spanish.

Sra. De Leon teaches Spanish II & Native Speaker: Spanish. She has a Master's Degree in Education from Concordia University in Oregon and a Bachelor's degree with an English Major and Spanish Minor from the University of Texas at Arlington. Sra. De Leon has been teaching for over ten years. This year is her 5th year teaching at Energy; she continually makes her class interactive through fun challenges, such as Kahoot, Ed Puzzle, and by screening movie narratives over challenging periods in Latin America. When asked what her favorite part of teaching is, Sra. De Leon said she likes "interacting with students, knowing that every day will be different, and watching students become more confident in their language skills." In her time off she enjoys reading about Mexican American history, watching Spanish novelas on Netflix, doing yoga, and cycling. Fun fact: Sra. De Leon cycled 575 miles from Austin to Dallas to raise money for AIDS awareness!

Sra. DeLeon's Words of Wisdom:
There are no shortcuts towards a goal that is worth obtaining. Life and learning is a process, not an event. Most of all, be kind to each other.

This school year is Sra. Sandberg's first year at Energy. She teaches AP Spanish, Spanish I, and Spanish II. She has a Master's Degree in Spanish from Middlebury College and a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree from the State University of New York at Purchase. Before coming to Energy, Sra. Sandberg taught at Pin Oak Middle School among various HISD schools for a total of fifteen years. Sra. Sandberg has also taught private flute lessons. In her time off, she enjoys making sculptures and playing music! When asked what her favorite part of teaching is, Sra. Sandberg said, "It is very rewarding when my students are able to use a second language to communicate. Sometimes it surprises them that they understand part of a conversation that they overhear in the grocery store, or that they are able to ask a question in Spanish to someone who does not speak English."

Ms.Sandberg's Words of Wisdom:
Be open-minded and travel, if possible. And stay off your cell phones!
