Mayor Sam Liccardo (center) cuts the ribbon at Uproar's brewery operations, with Steve and Christina Vandewater, co-owners of Uproar.

With paperwork completed for its on-site brewery operations, Uproar Brewing Company held a ceremonial ribbon-cutting just before the kick off of the SoFA Street Fair on April 22.

On hand were Mayor Sam Liccardo, David Tran representing City Councilmember Raul Peralez (D3) and Richard Berg, owner of the brewery's building. Uproar has been operating as a restaurant and bar since it opened in Downtown San José in June 2017, but was required to brew its own beer remotely, rather than in the brewery operations on-site, pending their federal license. The paperwork is complete, and Uproar is now able to craft its own brews on-site.

Uproar Brewing Company is owned and operated by Christina and Steve Vandewater, first-time restaurateurs and refugees from careers in information technology. Their team includes brewer Jim Turturici, a San José native with 25 years of brewing experience, and chef James Thornton, a veteran of Paper Plane and other San José restaurants.

Eastridge
Eastridge Unveils Community-Oriented Re-Vamp
____
Mural by Lila Gemellos, Eastridge Center.

A lot has changed since Eastridge Center opened its doors in 1971. Now the regional mall is evolving to keep up with the times.  On April 6, Eastridge owners took the wraps off a center-wide refresh that aims to keep the East San Jose mall's look, feel and amenity portfolio current and relevant.

The $15 million effort comes as retail shifts more and more online, forcing shopping-center owners to up their game and give shoppers a reason to visit brick-and-mortar spaces. At Eastridge, that means a big focus on public gathering spots within the mall.
