| The Kensington Family Shelter Celebrates Spring with Volunteers from the Community |

The Kensington Family Shelter bustled with activities this spring, all of which showcased the shelter's incredible network of community supporters.
In early April, volunteers from the community attended a spring luncheon and an Easter egg hunt. Sonjie Feliciano Solomon (pictured above), founder of Hatch Things LLC and inventor of PockeTeez, stopped by the shelter to hand out nearly 200 of these fun shirts, much to the delight of the children and their parents.

| In early May, volunteers from Neuberger Berman, a wealth management firm, spent a morning making the shelter's grounds beautiful by weeding and planting flowers along McDonald Avenue. A special CAMBA shout-out goes to Scott Woodcock for organizing this fantastic event, and to all the volunteers and supporters who dedicated their time to make our clients' stays at The Kensington a bit brighter. |

"We want to do everything possible to keep people out of shelter," said Steven Banks, the City's Social Services Commissioner, at the recent opening of CAMBA's HomeBase office in Staten Island. This new location,
featured on NY1
, is part of the Mayor's 5-year-plan to bring resources into homelessness prevention programs, like HomeBase.
"The additional tools include rental assistance, mediation with landlords, help to reconnect with friends and family, including financial assistance for families to take people in," the commissioner added.
The NYC Department of Homeless Services says nearly 12,000 people are homeless in Staten Island, but the borough only has the ability to shelter 140 people at this time. CAMBA is eager to expand our prevention services to Staten Island residents in order to help them maintain safe and stable housing.

During the month of March, which was Women's History Month, we reflected on CAMBA's work to support all women, including single mothers. Read an excerpt of this blog post below:
Fortunately, while at CAMBA's Flagstone Family Shelter, Ms. Noble joined the
SafeCare program, a program that provides one-on-one parent support in developing healthy parenting habits that maintain child safety and encourage parent-child bonding.
Ms. Noble was skeptical: "Would they tell me I am a bad mom? Is this really the help I need right now?" But once she gave it a chance, she found that the program did more than just give her the tools and strategies to manage toddler behavior. "It helps you feel like you aren't just a mother; you're a person," she says. She gained a friend in her SafeCare case manager, Ms. Addie (Adebukola Adeniyi), who helped her see that the same coping strategies she used as a parent could also help her as a breadwinner.

He's a classic man, and thanks to a new documentary about Grammy-nominated Jidenna, whose off-stage name is Jidenna Theodore Mobisson, a few lucky students and staff members at our East New York Beacon program got to meet the rapper and singer in early March. Students in the Beacon after-school program were thrilled to meet their idol in person and they peppered the performer with questions about his new album and about his ties to Brooklyn.
Jennifer Rodriguez, Regional Director of CAMBA's youth development programs in East New York, said that an innovative artist like Jidenna provides their students with both an excellent role model and an inspirational figure. The fact that the performer also lives in the neighborhood made his visit all the more exciting, she added.

Do you ever wonder what you can do when you see someone sleeping on a hard subway platform or curled up in a doorway for warmth?
CAMBA's Respite Bed Program offers a challenge to those who are interested in taking small steps to show compassion for New Yorkers who are homeless.
"Volunteers with the Respite Bed Program show people who are homeless that society has not forgotten about them," Yehudit Moch said of
CAMBA's Respite Bed Program, a unique effort she heads, and connects a network of faith-based respite sites, volunteers and clients of CAMBA's shelter system.
The program's volunteer coordinator, Joshua Foss, added, "When you come to the Respite Bed Program as a volunteer, you discover something about yourself and your place within the world."
Volunteers for the program are given the chance to roll up their sleeves and open their hearts while sharing meals and conversations with people who are homeless. Find out more by visiting camba.org, or by calling (718) 369-7226.
