Corn Planting date. The following data is from one year of a date of planting study from the ISU Northern Farm at Kanawha. This data should be considered a snapshot of the effects of planting date on corn yields and grain moisture at harvest. Other planting date studies in northern Iowa show similar results.

The three corn hybrids are 95 day, 104 day and 109 day.

Plant date             P9526           P0407               P0987                        average

The net effect of a mid-April corn planting date compared to mid- May corn planting date:

-   Corn yields decreased about 0.4 bu/acre/day or 10 bu/a.
-   Corn grain moisture increased 0.7 point.
-   Later maturity hybrids generally performed better than earlier maturity hybrids.

Dicamba training. Persons who plan to apply Engenia, Xtendimax or FeXapan need to have a private pesticide applicator certification and need to fulfill the dicamba training requirement.

Online training for dicamba application is available. This training takes about 90 minutes and must be completed in one session.

Soil moisture The figures below are the actual rainfall for the Northwest, North Central and West Central Crop Reporting Districts (CRD). The fall dates are after the crop was mature and before soils were frozen last fall. About 80% of this rainfall could be expected to contribute to soil moisture reserves.

Therefore, there is adequate soil moisture as spring field work begins. Read more about soil moisture this spring here.
