Your Community Brief from Oak Ridge High School
Friday, January 11, 2019

Welcome Back and Happy New Year Pioneers!

I hope this initial issue of 2019 finds your new year off to an excellent start! In case you have not yet heard, last month the Florida Department of Education released the 2017-2018 graduation rates for high schools throughout the state of Florida. I am very pleased to share with the community that Oak Ridge High School's graduation rate jumped three percentage points to 94% (table below). This reflects directly on the hard work of our students, the tireless efforts of their teachers, and great support from home. Congratulations Class of 2018 on your success as this is an impressive year-over-year gain plus tremendous progress from just a few years ago.

If you have a student attending Oak Ridge, the end of the 2nd marking period was Thursday, December 20th. Report cards for the second nine weeks will be distributed Friday, January 18th. Please review your student's grades with them as soon as possible keeping in mind we offer free after-school tutoring four days a week if needed.

Here at the start of 2019 I do want to remind our students and families about the importance of campus security. Should you ever see or hear of something suspicious or unusual, please say something to any teacher, staff member, coach, or school resource officer as soon as possible. Thank you.

"WHEN YOU HEAR IT. DO IT."
Posters like these are found throughout all OCPS campuses in both English and Spanish. We also remind the students of these four safety steps during the school year.

And so as we wrap up the first school week of the new year, may 2019 bring with it good health, peace and joy to you and your family.

With Pioneer Pride,

Ms. Jennifer Bellinger
Principal

Staff Spotlight
Ms. Clara Molina, Secretary

Ms. Molina's title of secretary does not accurately nor effectively describe her actual contributions to Oak Ridge High School.  She is extremely efficient at performing tasks of a confidential nature and has an excellent rapport in communicating with the staff, faculty, parents, students and the community.  Ms. Molina manages the office while composing memorandums and emails, answering telephone calls, taking messages and answering inquires on my behalf.  She is an expert at managing payroll and the recruiting system.

The principal counts on Ms. Molina to do many extra duties that consist of assisting her with planning and executing special events, preparing for administrative meetings, and keeping track of her calendar and schedule. Ms. Molina goes above and beyond on a daily basis and is an effective contributor to our school's success!

Friday's Motivational Moment!
Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day is Monday, January 21 (No school)

November 8, 1964 Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. smiles with parishioners on the day it is announced that he has won the Nobel Prize for Peace. He was only 35 years old at the time.

* A brilliant student and outstanding member of the high school debate team, Dr. King, Jr. skipped two grades and entered local Morehouse College at 15. He graduated in 1948 at age 19 and attended Crozer Theological Seminary in Chester, Pa., where he received his divinity degree three years later.
