Letter from the President

Dear Friend of The Rep,

Happy New Year!

We had a wonderful time with you in 2018 and we look forward to sharing a fantastic 2019 with you as well!

Things won't be slowing down anytime soon here at the Toledo Rep!  We open the new year with an American classic, Bus Stop , written by the "playwright of the Midwest", William Inge. With a stellar cast and a stunning set, you don't want to miss this production.

Following Bus Stop, we are excited to present another Toledo Rep cabaret fundraiser, "Love Is In The Air", at our 10th Street Stage on February 8th and 9th (yes, 2 nights!). Come out for a magical evening of food, cocktails, silent auctions, raffle prizes, a cabaret performance with songs full of love and heart.

Then in March, another critically acclaimed work will be coming to our stage: August Wilson's Fences, winner of the Pulitzer Prize and multiple Tony Awards.

In between all of our shows, our Rep Ed program remains busier than ever! Our Young Rep Ed winter session, "Rep Rocks!", began last Saturday and we have two Audition Workshops for children and teens happening in February and March. Registration is still open for our winter session of Adult Improv, which starts in February, but space is limited, so don't wait too long to enroll. New acting classes will also be starting up in the coming months-stay tuned for more details!

If you are one of the many supporters who have already made a contribution to the Toledo Repertoire Theatre this season, we thank you! If not, we hope you will consider supporting us in the New Year, to help us continue to offer productions, classes, workshops, programming, and special events for all ages that are relevant, stimulating, and diverse.

But beyond attending shows, taking classes, and giving, the New Year is also a great time to get involved as a volunteer. So much of what goes on here at The Rep is dependent upon our hard working volunteers. If you've ever considered doing something more with us, we would love to have you! Of course, the size of your commitment is entirely up to you. If you would like to learn about the various opportunities, visit our volunteer tab at toledorep.org.

Thank you as always for being a part of our Toledp Rep family!

January 11, 12, 17, 18, & 19 at 8:00pm
January 13 & 20 at 2:30pm
An American classic by the author known as "The Playwright of the Midwest." In the middle of a howling snowstorm, a bus out of Kansas City pulls up at a cheerful roadside diner. All roads are blocked, and a few weary travelers are going to have to hole up there until morning. Cherie, a nightclub chanteuse, is the passenger with the most to worry about. She's pursued by a young cowboy with a ranch of his own and the romantic methods of an unusually headstrong bull.

The greatest of French farces, perhaps the greatest farce ever written. Raymonde Chandebise suspects that her husband, Victor, a placid and successful insurance executive, is secretly having an affair. To find out, she and her friend Lucienne write him an anonymous love letter suggesting a rendezvous at the shady Frisky Puss Hotel. Thinking the letter was intended for his coworker, the gigolo Tournel, Victor sends Tournel off to make the rendezvous in his place. And after that...Ives' adaptation maintains the original's dazzling plot while communicating Feydeau's playful use of language to an American audience.

Beginners Improv will introduce students to the wonderful unscripted world of playing pretend with other adults. This class will introduce students to the foundations of improv, including the basics of creating that very first scene. Throughout these six weeks, students will learn object work, back-and-forth improv, and the lost art of listening.  The course will introduce students to games and experiences designed to let creativity flow freely and foster a dynamic and collaborative environment.
No experience necessary! Come ready to play!

    Advanced Improv
Advanced Improv will give more experienced students the opportunity to enhance their object work, scene work, and scene creation abilities.

    Previous improv experience necessary!

  • Long Form Improv
Long Form Improv will give experienced students the opportunity to explore a method of improv where a group of performers take one suggestion and create a theatrical piece inspired by that proposed idea.  Students will build upon the skills and techniques learned in Advanced Improv and what it means to create a piece by ensemble. Warm-Ups, Ice Breaker Games, and the structure of the class will all focus on team work to prepare students for the long haul of Long Form. The most popular and common forms will be studied during this program.

  •
  • ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR!

  • Paul Fruhwirth

  •
  • Paul was first bitten by the acting bug when he was only two months old. Once he recovered from the infection, he landed his first starring role as Baby Jesus in his neighborhood holiday pageant at only four months old. Later in life, Paul went on to have a love for the theatre, comedy, improv, sketch writing, and stand-up comedy. Beginning in 2012, Paul pursued a formalized education at The Second City Training Center in Old Town, a small neighborhood in the city of Chicago. Paul graduated from The Second City's Improv Program, the sketch comedy program, the stand-up comedy program, as well as the Writing for Late Night TV program.

While Paul's first passion is the stage, he has learned to expand that love into corporate America. In order to pay for his addiction to gummy bears and in-app purchases, Paul spends his days facilitating training sessions, sales presentations and traveling across the country on the speaking circuit.

Paul has appeared at Zany's Chicago, The Laugh Factory Chicago, The Second City Etc. Stage, and his sketches have appeared in The Second City's Skybox Theater. His mother is an Instructor of Performing Arts in Chicago, and specifically asked to be included in his biography. Paul's cat, "Melrose Place" or "Melly" for short, does not find him funny in the least.

TOLEDO BLADE

"Bus Stop" arriving at the Toledo Rep

The Toledo Repertoire Theatre will present William Inge's 1955 classic Bus Stop in seven performances beginning Friday.

The setting is a diner in the middle of nowhere, Kansas, on a desolate winter night. Five passengers had been traveling by bus from Kansas City when a fierce snowstorm has forced them to make the diner their last stop for the night.

Sonia Perez, director of the Toledo Rep's production of Bus Stop, said she is drawn to stories that are character-driven, shows that deal with an ensemble cast. "I like exploring relationships between characters as opposed to spectacles."

Bus Stop's script offers a twist of comedy and drama, something that Inge does as a playwright, Perez said. "He mixes it up and splices drama with comedy. I would say there are amusing sections, and would definitely say this is a story about people and their relationships."  There is a strong sense of realism to this play, she added, so the characters are very relatable; one could say, "I know someone like that."

"We are hopefully looking to take [audiences] on a journey through the lives of characters in this wonderful setting of the 1950s Midwest," Perez said.
