PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

Congratulations to our award winning communications team. What you say? The WA state PTA awarded Outstanding Newsletter for our weekly e-newsletter; Monday Messenger. The team that worked on creating this newsletter is Michelle Surkan, Stephanie Winkler-Hadley, Leo Barros Barretto and David Doud. Communication with our community is vital to the success of this school and we appreciate all the excellent work to make this happen. We will receive the award at this years WA State PTA convention. Way to go Team!!! We are currently upgrading our newsletter platform to be mobile friendly so for ALL of you that check our newsletter every Monday morning, it should be easier to see on your phone.
Please take the time to sign-up for our 2nd Annual Campus Improvement Day this Saturday, May 5th from 9:00 am - 12:00 pm. The BSD Facilities department, has asked us to work specifically in the area by the parking strip to lay down bark and clean up the area and will dump 7 yards of bark for us to spread around. Scroll down to find the link in this newsletter but the key is to show up. It is slated to be 66 F and Cloudy- perfect weather to work outdoors. We need about 50-60 people to make it happen.

Our Annual Fundraiser is coming up May 18th. After a heavy week of teaching, answering phones, curing people, calming people, traveling and everything else that makes us work hard each day, plan an evening of fun, laughter, helping our school reach it goals at the Bellevue Botanical Garden from 7:00 pm -9:30 pm. Tickets go on sale May 1-2nd. Visit our website for more information.

Lastly, BSF's 30th Annual luncheon was one for the books, earning over $800,000 to fund curriculum and services that make our schools great. Thanks to all the wonderful donors in this community that support this great foundation.

Best,
Meribeth Nordloef-Pedersen

QUESTION OF THE WEEK: SCHOOL SAFETY

How do you think the ISPTSA can support School Safety?

Responses:
"I would like to see more supervision at all the middle and high schools. There seems to be more accountability in elementary school but as soon as kids get to middle school it's a free-for-all and there's so much garbage on the school grounds and all kinds of behavior going on like melting things in the microwave etc., that don't seem to be observed or addressed. I would love to see more parent or staff taking a turn at lunch and break supervision. Thanks!"

"Launch a safe firearm storage campaign to let families know that school shootings and teen suicides can be prevented if you lock up your guns."

"Drop off and pick up guards. Traffic is terrible and students are consistently walking out from behind cars or crossing between buses and cars."

"Voting for the right party, advocating for stricter gun laws, talking to our state representatives. I understand the importance of keeping our students safe at school and see the need that we as parents have to do something. But overall this is not what the PTSA is here for and this has to be addressed on a higher level. The statement by the Superintendent about gun safety is not enough. Implementing active shooter drills in our schools is just complying with weak gun laws."

"We already have a lot of school volunteers, you need trained people to help with that issue. People who can help with bullying, depression... Treating the symptoms instead of the cause usually proves inefficient in life... So yes, if we can hire professionals we think can make a difference without making our school feel like a prison then financial support could be efficient."

"Lobbying for commonsense gun laws like those promoted by March for Our Lives (https://marchforourlives.com/how-we-save-lives/)."

"At community each week, have a SE check-in at the start to see where everyone is."

"I'm not sure of best way to increase security, but to find options discussions will be necessary and money to find ideas."
