Cowley House of Hope Survey

The Cowley House of Hope is conducting a survey to determine the number of homeless individuals in the area, beginning May 1, 2018 and running through June 1, 2018. The Housing & Urban Development (HUD) office defines homelessness in the following 4 Categories:
  • Is the individual or family living in a public or private place not meant for habitation;
  • Are there families living together in spaces causing overcrowding (Example: Ten individuals living in a two bedroom home);
  • Is there an imminent risk of homelessness;
  • Are there children involved;
  • Are there individuals fleeing domestic violence.
  • Couch surfers (This is not an official HUD definition, but should be counted)
When the discussion of a homeless shelter first began in January 2017, we determined the
number of homelessness to be around 150 and suspected the number to be higher. As we begin the process to educate and reconstruct the understanding of homelessness it will be imperative to provide accurate and timely information.
We don't need names or any personal information so there will no doubt be some overlap; all we're looking for is a snapshot to see if the number has moved since 2017. You can email me the results weekly or whatever is easiest for you. My email address is [email protected]

SC Percussion and Jazz Concerts Scheduled

The Southwestern College Percussion Ensemble and the SC Jazz Band and Jazz Combo will present concerts in May.

The SC Percussion Ensemble will present their spring concert on Tuesday, May 1 at 7 p.m., in Messenger Recital Hall, located in the Darbeth Fine Arts Center.

"The first half of the program will feature the work 'Process,' a piece that exemplifies the differences in processing for both neuroatypical and neurotypical persons," says Jeremy Kirk, director of bands and percussion at Southwestern College.   "The second half of the program will feature an island vibe with the Percussion Pops Ensemble performing tunes of Jimmy Buffett, Jimmy Cliff, and many more."

The SC Jazz Band and Jazz Combo will present "An Evening of Jazz" on Thursday, May 3 at 7 p.m., in the Richardson Performing Arts Center located on the main level of the Christy Administration Building.  According to Kirk, the concert will feature jazz standards from Miles Davis, Duke Ellington, and more, along with modern funk charts.

"Both concerts will feature a wide variety of styles," Kirk says. "From totalism to tropical and cool jazz to funk, there is something for everyone."

There is no admission charge for both concerts and the community is encouraged to attend.
