CHANGES COMING TO CHURCH AND PRESCHOOL OFFICE
The Future is in Good Hands
|
|
Aloha to my All Saints' 'Ohana:
It is with great sadness, yet joy, that we inform you that Chris Wataya will retire from her position as Church Administrator, effective March 31, 2019. Chris will be sorely missed but we understand that this is an opportunity for her to move forward with family, friends and other pursuits - just like all of us other "retired" persons!
Chris has worked in the church office for 26 years and has recently been working part-time as the Church Administrator. The position of Preschool Administrator has been filled on a part-time basis by one of the Preschool staff. However, it is evident that the office really needs to have somebody working full time to take care of administrative issues for both the Church and the Preschool.
The Vestry, therefore, approved combining the Church and Preschool administrative positions by hiring someone to work full time in the office as the
Church and Preschool Administrator.
|
|
Based on very positive recommendations from Fr. Ryan, Chris and others, Dominique "Cami" Pascua was identified as an ideal candidate to fill the position.
I contacted Cami and discussed an offer with her. I am very pleased to tell you that Cami accepted the offer and will be moving into the position of Church and Preschool Administrator effective February 1
st
. Cami will continue in her position as the Youth Minister working with the Ke Akua Youth Group.
Cami will work alongside Chris until such time as they are both confident that Cami is in a position to take over full time.
Me ke aloha 'olua, Chris a me Cami - with love to both, Chris and Cami.

EPISCOPAL CHURCH DAYS FOR HABITAT FOR HUMANITY
One 'Ohana Team Implementing the 2017 Strategic Design Plan
|
|
One ‘Ohana team,
We will be kicking off the new year with our first Habitat workday on Saturday, Jan 19
th
. As you may know, the Habitat org had the goal to complete 17 homes in 2018, but fell a bit short. While many of the homes that we started on several months ago are at or near completion, some homes are still in the early stages and need our help to complete construction. Please let me know if you can help out in any way. As usual, we will be carpooling from All Saints' at 6:45AM and meeting at St John’s to store our lunches at 7:30AM. We will get to the Habitat worksite in Eleele by 7:45AM, so please join us.

MINISTRY COUNCIL MEETING
Minutes from January 5
th
|
|
All Saints’ Ministry Council met on Saturday, January 5
th
to kick off the new year. The meeting included great discussions of the objectives for the year and best practices for volunteer recruitment.
OBJECTIVES FOR 2019
- Ministry Showcase Presentations will be used throughout the year. For example, they can be set up for the Annual Meeting and regularly at the coffee hour.
- We plan to continue the Quarterly Beach Gatherings. Stay tuned for details from Hospitality.
- We will work to actively recruit more volunteers for Buildings and Grounds.
- A focus of Laundry Love will be on more patron engagement and involvement and recruiting more volunteers for the On Call List.
- Music ministry - Hank will record music for times when he is not available for services.
VOLUNTEERS
- Prayers for Volunteers during Prayers of the People: We will include a prayer of thanksgiving for Ministry volunteers each week during the Prayers of the People.
- Recruitment: We agreed that the best way to interest others in helping is through individual, one-on-one conversations. “All Saints’ Church is a family and we need your help”. We encourage everyone to give their time and talent.
- Publicity: We will continue describing the various Ministries in articles published in the Epistle. This year we are targeting stories on Ushers, Preschool, Monday Crew, Healing Prayers, Daughters of the King and Lay Eucharistic Ministers.
The next meeting is set for May, 2019

PERSONAL EPIPHANIES
Calls to Service
|
|
The word “epiphany” is usually considered in the context of the Bible. However, it is commonly used to describe a personal revelation. Some parishioners share their personal epiphanies that called them to serve ministries at All Saints’.

Daughters of the King
Many years ago, in a small parish in Louisiana, I joined a group of women called the Order of the Daughters of the King who met for regular prayer. When All Saints’ became my spiritual home in 2013, there was something I was seeking. The Daughters of the King is a very old Episcopal group and with permission from the rector here at All Saints’, I started a chapter with a small group of women who were also interested in gathering for prayer. Now I have a wonderful group of women who meet twice a month. More interested women have also joined that initial group. What I was seeking is found!

Aloha Hour
Bill and I felt welcomed into the All Saints' 'ohana from our earliest experiences after moving to Kaua'i in February 2003. We found a warm, friendly and welcoming congregation and were soon involved with a group who got together for breakfast every Sunday after church. There was no Aloha Hour every week - just a monthly event to celebrate a birthday, anniversary etc., and for which people signed up to provide everything - food, coffee, water and juice/sodas.
While we enjoyed our regular Sunday get together with our particular group we soon realized that we were missing out on getting to know the rest of our 'ohana. So we proposed a "coffee hour" after each Sunday service with coffee and cookies. Many people said it would not work but now we have a successful Aloha Hour every Sunday which brings our congregation and visitors together to talk story and get to know each other. It just took a little planning - and a lot of faith!

FIRST SUNDAY AFTER THE EPIPHANY
The Baptism of Our Lord
|
|
The Feast of the Baptism of Our Lord is celebrated each year on the Sunday following the Feast of the Epiphany on January 6. The event of Christ’s baptism is recorded in all four gospel accounts:
“In those days Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan. And just as he was coming up out of the water, he saw the heavens torn apart and the Spirit descending like a dove on him. And a voice came from heaven, ‘You are my Son, the Beloved; with you I am well pleased’” (Mark 1:9-11).
“Now when all the people were baptized, and when Jesus also had been baptized and was praying, the heaven was opened, and the Holy Spirit descended upon him in bodily form like a dove. And a voice came from heaven, ‘You are my Son, the Beloved; with you I am well pleased’” (Luke 3:21-22).
“The next day he saw Jesus coming towards him and declared, ‘Here is the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world! This is he of whom I said, “After me comes a man who ranks ahead of me because he was before me.” I myself did not know him; but I came baptizing with water for this reason, that he might be revealed to Israel.’And John testified, ‘I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and it remained on him. I myself did not know him, but the one who sent me to baptize with water said to me, “He on whom you see the Spirit descend and remain is the one who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.” And I myself have seen and have testified that this is the Son of God’” (John 1:29-34).
“Then Jesus came from Galilee to John at the Jordan, to be baptized by him. John would have prevented him, saying, ‘I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me?’ But Jesus answered him, ‘Let it be so now; for it is proper for us in this way to fulfill all righteousness.’ Then he consented. And when Jesus had been baptized, just as he came up from the water, suddenly the heavens were opened to him and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting on him. And a voice from heaven said, ‘This is my Son, the Beloved, with whom I am well pleased’” (Matthew 3:13-17).

BAPTISM
What Does it Mean?
|
|
Baptism is full initiation by water and the Holy Spirit into Christ's Body, the church. God establishes an indissoluble bond with each person in baptism. God adopts us, making us members of the church and inheritors of the Kingdom of God (BCP, pp. 298, 858). In baptism we are made sharers in the new life of the Holy Spirit and the forgiveness of sins. Baptism is the foundation for all future church participation and ministry. Each candidate for
baptism
in the Episcopal Church is to be sponsored by one or more baptized persons.
Sponsors (godparents) speak on behalf of candidates for baptism who are infants or younger children and cannot speak for themselves at the Presentation and Examination of the Candidates. During the baptismal rite the members of the congregation promise to do all they can to support the candidates for baptism in their life in Christ. They join with the candidates by renewing the baptismal covenant. The water of baptism may be administered by immersion or affusin (pouring) (BCP, p. 307). Candidates are baptized "in the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit," and then marked on the forehead with the sign of the cross. Chrism may be used for this marking. The newly baptized is "sealed by the Holy Spirit in Baptism and marked as Christ's own for ever." When all baptisms have been completed, the celebrant and congregation welcome the newly administered within the eucharist as the chief service on a Sunday or another feast.
The Catechism notes that "Infants are baptized so that they can share citizenship in the Covenant, membership in Christ, and redemption by God." The baptismal promises are made for infants by their parents or sponsors, "who guarantee that the infants will be brought up within the Church, to know Christ and be able to follow him" (BCP, pp. 858-859). Baptism is especially appropriate at the Easter Vigil, the Day of Pentecost, All Saint's Day or the Sunday following, and the Feast of the Baptism of our Lord (the First Sunday after the Epiphany).

|
What We Believe?
In the waters of baptism, we are lovingly adopted by God into God’s family, which we call the Church, and given God’s own life to share and reminded that nothing can separate us from God’s love in Christ. Holy Baptism, which can be performed through pouring of water or immersion in it, marks a formal entrance to the congregation and wider Church; the candidates for the sacrament make a series of vows, including an affirmation of the
Baptismal Covenant
, and are baptized in the Name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. They are marked as Christ’s own for ever, having “clothed [themselves] with Christ” (Galatians 3:27).
All people of any age are welcome to baptized; we believe in one baptism for the forgiveness of sins, as the “bond which God establishes in
Baptism
is indissoluble” (Book of Common Prayer, p. 298).

Prayer for the Search Committee
|
|
God, send your blessings on the All Saints’ Church Search Committee as they work to find a pastor who will lead us, tend to us, and challenge us to be the best people we can be. Help us to navigate the process in a spirit of hope, knowing that the Holy Spirit is ever present to guide and lead us. When the journey seems long and our faith runs low, help us to remember that You walk with us always. Help us to be open to the stirrings of the Holy Spirit and trust that all things will work out for our good. We ask this in the name of Your Son, our Savior, Jesus Christ. Amen

SUNDAY SCHOOL THIS WEEK
Jesus Grows Up
|
|
In accordance with Jewish law, Jesus is taken to the Temple to be named, after eight days.
Then, at the time prescribed by the law, he was brought to the temple and presented and dedicated to God. There, he is seen by Simeon and by Anna, who recognize him as the Messiah.
Luke then tells the only story that we have of Jesus as a young boy. He and his family make their pilgrimage to Jerusalem at Passover time, and are returning home when Mary and Joseph discover that Jesus is not with them. They search frantically for him for three days. Finally, they go to the Temple in Jerusalem, where they find him talking with the teachers. Jesus is amazed that his parents did not know that he would be “in my Father’s house.”
