Laura Schoen Carbonneau, CEO
I've been writing this article in my head ever since February 14. That's the day Scott decided to accept an opportunity in Sioux Falls which would start our family's process of change. I've thought over and over about all the things I wanted to say in my last article. Now that it's time to write, I'm finding it hard to put the words on paper. But write I must, because the deadline is approaching...
Many people don't know that it took me three tries to get this job. The first time, I don't think I even made the first round of interviews. The second time, I did interview, but the position was offered to someone else. About a year later, I was at a planning meeting for the Vietnam War Memorial Dedication. Sandi Durick, who was serving as the chamber board president at the time, pulled me aside and asked if I was still interested in the position. It turns out the CEO had decided to leave and the board thought I might be a good fit. That was the beginning. I started on August 7, 2006 and my last day will be May 18, 2018.
It's not always been easy, but I've loved this job. I've enjoyed being part of an organization whose purpose is to help others succeed. In 11 years, there has never been one day exactly like the next. New challenges and new opportunities were at every turn. It has been a wonderful place to create partnerships, develop relationships and find ways to help strengthen the community. And let's be honest, the office didn't hurt. I am confident I've had one of the best views in town!
Over the years I had the opportunity to work with a tremendous staff, board of directors, volunteers and members. I've learned from them, searched for solutions with them and together, we have looked for ways to continuously improve. To me that's what a chamber is really all about. The people, the places, the businesses, the relationships. Thank you for all the experiences and lessons learned. I'll miss you all.
It's hard to leave a community you've come to consider your home... where you got married... had your children and made good friends. We'll miss so much about Pierre and will be forever thankful of our time spent here.
For those of you who are wondering, we have decided to live in Brandon and work in Sioux Falls. As I write this, we haven't found a house yet, but hope to soon! Scott has been on the job since the beginning of March. He is the Vice President of Marketing at First Premier Bank. I recently accepted a position which will allow me to do work similar to what I've done here. My new employers asked me to hold off on a formal announcement until they get a press release out. But it is safe to say this position will allow me to stay connected with the chamber, if even in a small way. My new job starts on June 4.
I'm proud to have served as CEO of the Pierre Area Chamber of Commerce. I hope I made a difference.

Worlds Largest One-Day Leadership Conference to be Simulcast in at the Pierre Ramkota on May 4 |
Leadercast
is the world's largest one-day leadership conference, broadcast LIVE from Atlanta and simulcast to hundreds of locations around the world on May 4, 2018. Pierre Mayor Steve Harding's Report

Now that Spring has finally arrived, so has construction season. At the top of the list this year are several of Pierre's major thoroughfares. You'll want to take note; the construction projects could change your travel patterns.
Orange cones have already started to appear on Harrison Avenue. The section of road between North Tyler and Sunset Drive is being completely rebuilt; we're also resurfacing Harrison from Sunset Drive to North Taylor Avenue. This project is a continuation of the work completed on Harrison Avenue last summer when we rebuilt Harrison from Capitol Avenue to North Tyler. This is a high-traffic street in Pierre, and consequently it requires significant maintenance to keep the motoring public safe.
Work has also already begun on Park Street. Between Grant and Pierce Avenues, Park Street is being completely rebuilt. This includes storm sewer repairs, new curb and gutter, new road base and a new street surface.
Governors Drive is getting a facelift and that dovetails right into work on Fourth Street. Almost the full length of Fourth Street, from Garfield Avenue well past the State Health Lab, is getting a new surface. Construction work is also planned on East Capitol Avenue, Country Drive and Plum Drive.

As we say hello to construction season and the improvements it brings to our community, we say goodbye to someone who has worked for many years to improve Pierre all year round. That person is Chamber CEO, Laura Schoen Carbonneau. On behalf of the City of Pierre, thank you Laura, for all you have done for Pierre. Whether you were securing a spot for our City in the Fireball Run television series, helping Pierre make its mark on the MONOPOLY Board, buoying downtown during the construction of Main Street, encouraging all of us to shop local, or luring in anglers from all over the country, you were giving Pierre a boost. Thank you for all you have done -you'll be missed!

Fort Pierre Mayor Gloria Hanson's Report
The highest priority identified in the first Healthy Hometown public meeting was establishing a community garden in Fort Pierre, not necessarily because it was the most important issue, but because of the short timeframe involved if we want to harvest produce yet this summer!
A committee of 9-10 people has been working diligently since the meeting in mid-March. We are hopeful that planting can begin before June 1.
The first barrier, as always, is money. There is nothing included in the City budget for a community garden, so any necessary funding will be raised through grants and sponsorships. But that challenge is balanced by an advantage: it won't be necessary to pay for a lot. There are dozens of vacant lots scattered through Fort Pierre, owned by the Corps of Engineers, which already have water service. A written request has been made for authorization to use one of the lots for a community garden. We have verbal assurance this should be an easy request to grant.
We have identified three locations (all Corps property) scattered throughout town for community gardens, and we will start with one, located between Rose and River Lanes, about a half block from Deadwood Avenue.
The committee considered six different options for beds or plots and settled on raised beds made of 18-gauge galvanized steel, sold locally at Sioux Nation Ag Supply. Once installed, they will require little or no maintenance. There will be 26 beds in this first garden, 4'x'40'x18". The plan includes a 6-foot chain link security fence, and possibly a couple of picnic tables and compost bins.

BID No. 1 Board Welcomes New Member, Elects Officers

Christina Klinger, an attorney with the May Adam Law Firm, has joined the seven-member Business Improvement District No. 1 board of directors. She will serve a three-year term.
At its April meeting, Brad Reinke with Reinke Gray Wealth Management was re-elected as chairman. John Poncelet, Governors Inn, was re-elected as Secretary. Appointed to another three-year term was Rick Patel, owner of the Super 8 and Baymont Inn & Suites.
The BID No. 1 board meets quarterly to consider proposals for spending the city's proceeds from the local occupancy tax applied to hotel stays. It then makes recommendations to the city of Pierre through the annual budget process or for special public improvement projects.
Earlier this year local outdoor enthusiasts (experts) John Hight, Rick Murray and Paul Marso represented Pierre at five sports shows in the upper Midwest, including the national Pheasant Fest convention in Sioux Falls. The group, who volunteer their time, reported that the shows were well attended and they received questions about good times of the year to come out fishing, the Bassmaster Elite Tournament coming to Pierre, and that there was good interest in finding out about what the Pierre area has to offer.
The Bassmaster event at the end of June is one of the largest single investments by the BID board to date. The national exposure for the Pierre area and Lake Oahe will be tremendous. Volunteers are always needed for these big events. Contact the Chamber if you can help.
Other upcoming events supported by the Pierre BID include the state American Legion varsity baseball tournament in July, youth and adult softball tournaments, and the South Dakota 4-H Rodeo Finals in August.
With very few exceptions, the lodging industry across the state has experienced low occupancy rates compared to the previous year. Initial indications are that 2018 will be better across the state, and in Pierre, thanks in part to the efforts of local BID boards.
The goal of Pierre's BID board is to put more heads in beds, which generates more occupancy tax revenue to support marketing efforts and new or expanded events. More heads in beds means more people in town to support our other retail and service businesses.

NRF survey: US consumers to spend $23.1B on mom this year
About 86% of Americans will spend about $23.1 billion on jewelry, outings and other gifts to celebrate Mother's Day this year, according to a survey from the National Retail Federation and Prosper Insights & Analytics. Walgreens tests merchandising changes, membership program
Walgreens is testing a program at 17 stores in the Gainesville, Fla., market that includes lower prices, new services and streamlined merchandise selections. Walmart, Target rev up plans for more car-charging stations
Electric car makers are working with retailers including Walmart and Target to add hundreds of vehicle charging stations at their stores. Target has 18 stations at stores in five states and it expects to grow to 100 over the next two years to give more customers a chance to charge their cars while they shop, spokesman Lee Henderson said. Research: Amazon to take top spot among US apparel retailers
Amazon is on track to become the biggest apparel retailer in the US this year, as millennials shift more of their shopping online, according to research from Morgan Stanley. Amazon currently follows Walmart while Target, Kohl's and T.J. Maxx round out the top five. CNBC (4/19)
Retail stores are closing at a brisk pace this year
More US stores are shuttering this year and at a pace that could surpass the closures in 2017. CoStar Group says 77 million square feet of closures have been announced thus far in 2018 compared with 105 million square feet for all of last year. Bloomberg Businessweek (4/17)
Walmart gets more competitive with consumable goods prices
Walmart's prices on consumables have grown more competitive with discounters including Dollar General and Dollar Tree, according to a recent survey from Raymond James. "Our latest survey provides evidence that Walmart is reinvesting some of its tax savings into pricing as part of an effort to grow market share," analyst Dan Wewer wrote. MarketWatch (4/17)
American Dream complex could debut in 2019
The American Dream entertainment complex and mall in New Jersey is expected to be completed in March 2019, the developer says. Despite numerous delays, more than 450 retailers have signed on at the development, which will include an 8.5-acre theme park and an indoor skiing and snowboarding facility. US consumers buy more appliances, furniture and cars in March

Sears to shutter final Chicago store this summer

We are hoping for some warm weather in May. April was a bit cool and too wintery. Everyone is ready for spring. The Pierre Convention & Visitors Bureau will focus the first week in May on National Travel & Tourism Week. The Pierre CVB joins various cities and travel-related businesses statewide to talk about the importance of tourism in South Dakota and to explore the attractions and unique spots in our own back yards. We partner with South Dakota Tourism during the events we have that week.
The Pierre CVB will visit with Laura Schoen Carbonneau and DT Meyer on the KCCR morning radio show on Wednesday, May 2nd. We will visit about all the activities going on this week and also about the events for the summer in Pierre.
On May 3rd, the Pierre CVB will travel to Mitchell, SD for the annual "Lit Swap". The Lit Swap is a great way to drop off our visitors guide for the Interstate Information Centers and to connect with other travel professionals in the state. Over 2500 visitor guides will be delivered to Centers and other communities on that day.

Tuesday, May 8, the Pierre Hospitality Committee will meet and discuss the importance of hospitality in our area. We will meet at 3:30pm at the Cultural Heritage Center.
The 10th Annual Incredible Race will take place on Thursday, May 10th. Teams of two will follow clues in a race around Pierre to various attractions and businesses. At each stop, teams will pick up a playing card along with a clue to their next destination. The winning teams will be determined by who finishes first and the best poker hand. We will have airline tickets to Denver as prizes to give away. Pre-registration is required. There is no cost and competition is open to all ages.You will be driving to each destination. It is finally warming up and just in time for all of the fun summer events coming up! Ribbon cuttings, Leadercast, the 10th Annual Incredible Race, Graduation, and Business After Hours are just few of the events going on this month!
April and May are big months for Ribbon Cuttings; we celebrated at the Alley Cat Casino, the White Bunny and Fashion RX in April. If you missed these events, I encourage you to stop by these establishments and welcome them to the community! Ribbon cuttings celebrate new businesses, new ownership, and remodels! If you would like to host a ribbon cutting, give me a call today to get it scheduled! Days Inn is the next scheduled ribbon cutting, to be held on Thursday, May 3rd.
Graduation is on my mind this year as my husband and I have our first senior graduating from TF Riggs this month. We have been planning and preparing all year, and feel we are almost ready...for the party anyway. If you don't think our local economy is affected by Graduation, you couldn't be more wrong. Planning this graduation party has made me realize that hotels, gas stations, restaurants, caterers, and all local retail shops benefit from this annual mile-stone. The Pierre and Ft. Pierre communities support our students unconditionally and that has never been more-clear to me than this year - be sure to thank them by shopping local first! Congrats to all the 2018 graduates of TF Riggs and Stanley County!
Business After Hours will be held at Hyde Stadium on May 31st from 4:30-6pm. Come meet the Pierre Trappers, and visit with the chamber members who are co-hosting this event. Clark Engineering, Edgewood Senior Living, First Dakota National Bank, The Oahe YMCA, and Bounce Around City will be-on hand to help kick off the 2nd home game for the Trappers! As always, Business After Hours is open to the public and we welcome everyone to attend! It is going to be a great night of networking and baseball!

Casey Tibbs "Match of Champions" Bronc Ride to be Sanctioned as PRCA Event |
For the first time in its' 25 years, the Casey Tibbs "Match of Champions" bronc ride will be an official Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA) event. The event will be held Saturday, June 2, 2018 at the Stanley County Fairgrounds in Fort Pierre.
As the largest American rodeo association in the world, the PRCA endorses particular rodeos across the United States, and as far away as Canada, Mexico and Brazil. Top competitors in each of the circuit rodeo events compete for points at PRCA events held during the year. "The Casey Tibbs 'Match of Champions' will be one of those circuit rodeo events this year attracting the best riders from across the country," said Board Member Bryan Hanson. "Herreid, South Dakota will also host a PRCA event the night before (June 1). Riders will have the opportunity to participate in two PRCA sanctioned events in close proximity." Tickets for the Fort Pierre event will go on sale May 1st.
The top money winners in each PRCA discipline earn a trip to the annual December championship National Finals Rodeo(NFR) held in Las Vegas. The PRCA maintains extremely high standards for the contestants and stock to maximize entertainment, providing the attendees with an enhanced and exciting event.
"We're making it an entire day western and rodeo events," said Casey Tibbs Rodeo Center Director Cindy Bahe. At 3:00 that day, the Casey Tibbs Rodeo Center will host a public unveiling of the large Casey Tibbs bronze statue. "Tibbs was a six-time World Champion bronc rider," said Bahe. "This will be the second large outdoor bronze statue to be placed. The first bronze statue of 5-time World Champion Billy Etbauer was set in 2013 and we will place a third bronze statue of 4-time World Champion Clint Johnson next year. Our sculpture garden will highlight the top three bronc riders in South Dakota."
On that afternoon, ranchers can burn their brands on the outdoor timbers and the museum will be open to the public for a reduced admission. A Steak Fry will follow from 5-7pm at the Stanley County Fairgrounds with the Match of Champions Bronc Ride starting at 7pm.
