FROM THE MOUTHS, AND EYES, AND EARS OF BABES

More than three million children witness domestic violence in their families each year. Three million. Think about that for just a moment, and your heart hurts. The things they've seen, the things they've heard, the travesties they've endured, for most of us this is simply unimaginable.

47 percent of the children that arrive at Saint John's suffer from anxiety or depression as a result of their homelessness, and more than 70 percent of our women and children are coming from a life where domestic violence was prevalent. While most programs that address domestic violence serve the needs of the women that are being abused, and they should, it is of the utmost importance that the children do not get left behind in this nurturing, healing process. We get that.

At Saint John's, we focus on whole person care for both the clients AND their children. Not only are we able to provide them with a safe and stable environment, but from Day One, the needs of our children are immediately addressed with wrap-around services including social and emotional screening, outreach and referral services, one-on-one and family therapy and educational coaching. From Day One, the nurturing and healing process begins.

The month of October is recognized nationally as Domestic Violence Awareness Month, and in support of this campaign, Saint John's has been invited, for the third year in a row, to participate in Allstate's Purple Purse Challenge . Some 220 nonprofits across the country have united in competition to raise funds for life-changing services to help domestic violence survivors, with weekly added financial incentives and prizes awarded to the organizations that raise the most funds.

Please help us help our children, and our moms, by donating today to our Purple Purse Challenge fundraising effort. We simply cannot do what we do without support from our generous donors!

Executive Chef Chris Jarosz
A huge thank you to Broderick Roadhouse for generously supporting our final Guest Chef Dinner of the year!

On October 4, we enjoyed the delicious creations from the Broderick Masters at this year's final Guest Chef Dinner, with Executive Chef Chris Jarosz at the helm. The tasty wines from Matchbook Wine Company and the beautiful crooning of Tom Drinnon made for a memorable evening. We are also so grateful to Wells Fargo for being this year's Dinner Series Sponsor!   The gorgeous centerpieces last night were generously donated by Flora Fresh Inc. and created by an amazing volunteer, Jann Reeves!

We were so very proud of Angel as she found the courage and the vulnerability to share her story not only with all of us, but also with her biggest supporter, her sister Carla. It truly does take a village - the support of families working in concert with our staff, our supporters and partners at Saint John's makes for a powerful team effort that is a true testament to the success of our program.
Every time you attend a Guest Chef Dinner, eat at Plates CafĂ© or Plates Midtown, attend Polo for Change or Party for Change, join our monthly giving club or support us in any way, it compels us to work harder. Together, we can help more women and children experiencing homelessness move from crisis to self-sustainability.

We look forward to having you join us in 2019!
"Pretty on the Inside"

Every spring and fall for the past 20 years, our amazing volunteer Daisy LaForm has orchestrated an event called "Pretty on the Inside," designed to make our clients feel beautiful and powerful and confident, inside and out!  This fall's event, held at Saint John's on Saturday, September 29, did just that!

Daisy and her trusty sidekick, Trudi, recruited 50+ volunteers to provide a day of pampering for our ladies, including haircuts & styling, pedicures, manicures, waxing, massages, essential oils/hand washing, makeup, new purses and a selection of clothing and shoes to choose from for new career outfits!  The pampering was followed by a delicious lunch, also prepared and served by volunteers, along with a hula show and prayer. The women left refreshed and rejuvenated!

If you, or someone you know, would like to volunteer your services and/or your time for a future "Pretty on the Inside" event, please contact Daisy LaForm at 916-712-5042, [email protected].

Volunteer Spotlight - Jim Cassie

We are fortunate to have had our wonderful volunteer, Jim Cassie, join us this growing season to provide our children and our campus with this beautiful garden and green space. Our chef at Saint John's has had access to fresh produce all season, and has enjoyed being able to pick carrots and add fresh herbs to many dishes. Earlier in the season, from time to time, a few kiddos were found sneaking the occasional strawberry! Thank you Jim for all that you do to make our community feel at home.

"A garden requires patience, labor and attention. Plants do not merely grow to satisfy ambition or to fulfill good intentions. They thrive because someone expended effort on them."

DONATE MONEY OR GOODS
Saint John's relies heavily on donations from our community. Your financial support of Saint John's crucial. We also need your support in providing clothing for school and/or for job interviews, diapers or feminine hygiene products, and/or an unused vehicle. These are all donations that will make an enormous impact on a woman or child's life.

By dining at Plates Midtown or Plates Cafe, or by choosing Plates to cater your next event, you are not only eating fresh and locally sourced food, you are also supporting the employment training of Saint John's women, contributing to the success of the program as a whole. 100% of proceeds directly support women working to recuperate and reengineer their lives.

Today is the perfect day for a new beginning.  Together, we will give more women and children the opportunity to start a new life - a life filled with hope, joy and endless opportunities. With your  gift  today, you will provide a family at Saint John's not only a safe home, but also a hand up through an educational program that empowers mothers to provide for themselves and their families.
