Honoring our Teachers
This Friday we honor our teachers (and staff) at our annual Celebration of Dedication and Excellence. While we hope teachers are appreciated every day, this event brings all students and faculty together to focus us on the value that they bring to our students’ lives. It is also an opportunity to offer a special thank you to those individuals who are celebrating milestone anniversaries. This year we have individuals who are completing five, ten, fifteen and even twenty-five years of service. In this day and age, that kind of loyalty and commitment is rare.

Recently I attended a gathering of Roycemore alumni in Los Angeles, hosted by one of our parents of alumni. The gathering included alumni that ranged anywhere from the class of 2005 to the class of 1982! It was wonderful to listen to the stories they shared of their fond Roycemore memories, including typical teenage antics that anyone might expect. There was a LOT of laughter and the evening stretched on as the alumni found it hard to pull themselves away from such an enjoyable evening. What was particularly touching were the stories shared about teachers who had made such a difference in the lives of the alumni. They talked about the special relationships that they had with their teachers— that it was more like family than a teacher-student relationship. This past week, I received a call from the host of the gathering as she was so touched by the evening that she wanted to make a donation to the school on top of hosting the gathering. She shared with me that at the end of the evening, she was talking with her friend who had attended the event to help her out and her friend said, “wow, I didn’t know there was a place like this. Teachers get so involved with their students and really support them.”

Although decades have passed, this remains true today. Because of our small size, our teachers truly know each student and are constantly thinking of ways to help them reach their full potential. As a new member of the Roycemore community I am constantly touched to see the depth of commitment that our teachers have for our students. There really isn’t a way to thank them enough for all of the inspiration, support, guidance, and love they bring to our children every day— but this Friday, we will take a special moment to shine the light on them.

Book Chat— What School Could Be

In partnership with Northwestern University and the Family Action Network, Roycemore is hosting two opportunities in April to participate in a book chat on Ted Dintersmith’s new book, “What School Could Be.” This is a follow up to Ted’s recent FAN event at New Trier High School. Ted is also the co-author of the book, Most Likely to Succeed. The book and film (of the same name) served as the catalyst for our NextGen Roycemore conversations.

There will be both a morning and an evening book chat, click the button to register:

You are Invited to Participate in a Roycemore Fourth of July!

Roycemore School is planning to have a float in the Evanston Fourth of July parade this year. If you are interested in participating in the making of the float, we will be building it at school the week of June 25th. We are in search of a flat bed truck/ trailer for the float, volunteers to build, and volunteers to participate in the parade. The parade starts at 2:00 pm on July 4th and is over around 4:00 pm, when we will relocate to Roycemore for a community picnic / barbeque. Following the picnic / barbeque, a group will walk down to the waterfront to enjoy the Palatine Band followed by fireworks. Please email Adrianne Finley Odell to let her know if you have a truck or flatbed, went to participate in float building, participate in the parade, and/ or participate in the picnic/ barbeque at Roycemore following the parade.
