Welland's Record Breaking Activity in 2018 Forecasted to Continue in 2019
Welland, ON - The City of Welland experienced a record year in 2018 for building activity and residential growth, based on data provided by the city's Building and Planning Division.

The data shows a steady increase in the number of building permits issued over the past ten years.

New Name for Former GE Brilliant Factory
Welland's GE Brilliant Factory has a new name and owner after private-equity firm Advent International completed its acquisition of GE's Distributed Power business.
Advent said Monday that it finalized the deal first announced in June and formed a new standalone energy company -  INNIO.

"We are aware the sale has been completed ... we are establishing a meeting with new owners," said Welland Mayor Frank Campion.

Innio's Welland plant needs more employees, and Frank Campion is encouraging residents to apply to the state-of-the-art gas engine company.

" They're continuing to hire people ... they need more people to apply to complement and fill out their staff and get up to full production," said Welland's mayor.

He said people shouldn't be intimidated about applying to the high-tech, advanced manufacturing firm, even if they don't think they have the necessary skill set to work there.

Welland could soon be home to the largest Canadian Tire Store in Ontario, and possibly Canada, if the city allows official plan and zoning bylaw amendments to move forward.

On Dec. 18, city council heard from Jonathan Rodger, a senior associate with planning firm Zelinka Priamo Ltd., about the proposed expansion of the store on Primeway Drive.

"This won't be a stand-alone sporting good or clothing store."

Operations at Convergys are ending, but a new company from Toronto is setting up shop and bringing 100 jobs back to the same Welland building in the new year.

In October, it was announced that the call centre on Lincoln Street would be hanging up for the last time on Dec. 8 after 16 years of employing Niagara residents.

This prompted Kanetix Ltd., which claims to be Canada's largest digital acquisition platform for insurance and financial services, to phone Welland city hall and begin working with the municipality on acquiring the site.

Welland's former GE Brilliant Factory generated a big rebate through the use of energy efficient lighting, said Welland Hydro's conservation manager Sylvia Denton.

Denton, along with hydro's president and chief executive officer Wayne Armstrong and Perry Orosz, director of customer service and employee relations, made a stop at the factory - now called  INNIO - Wednesday to drop off a cheque for $157,205.

"When we found out GE was coming to Welland we reached out to them during the planning stages and started them on the high-performance new construction program through saveONenergy," said Denton from inside the facility.
