January 11, 2019
Hi all,

The Word of the Week is STRIKE. UTLA, the union that represents public school teachers in Los Angeles (a school district that has over 600,000 students) is scheduled to strike on Monday, January 14th.

On the heels of teacher walk-outs in Tennessee, West Virginia, Arizona, and more last year, more teachers are rising up and saying "enough!" in many more states. WHY now? What is going on? You can read more about it in the article links below.

Here is an analysis that says it's more than teacher pay that is fueling the fire:  THE 2018 WAVE OF TEACHER STRIKES

Here are some stats regarding the 2018 strikes.

Here is an analysis that links the walk-outs to the #metoo movement:  WHY TEACHERS ARE WALKING OUT.

Here is an article that talks about how to make walk-outs successful.

There's a theme here. What do you think it is?

Teacher Licensing Updates

Background Check

Educators who hold a lifetime license are required to have a background check once every five years. The application to complete your background check is now available at this  link . Educators who hold a lifetime teaching license and have not completed a background check since 2014 must complete their background check on or before June 30, 2019. Failure to complete your background check will invalidate your lifetime license.

The timeline for required background checks coincides with the year in which your previous 5 year professional or 10 year master educator license would have expired. For example, if you last renewed your license in 2015 your background check would be due in 2020. Background check applications are only accepted between January 1 and June 30 each year.

Your background check will include a conduct and competency questionnaire and require a payment of $45. Full instructions on applying for your background check can be found  here . Please contact Region 3 with any questions.

Tiered Licensing Structure

The recent repeal and recreation of PI 34 created a tiered licensing structure.  DPI has created a one-page guide to explain the different licensing tiers.   Please review the DPI Licensing Tiers PDF for information on the tiered structure.
