Scheduled Upcoming Civic Meetings - Residents are invited to attend the upcoming City meetings.  Below is a list of the meetings with their date, time and location:

Commission on Aging
  • The Commission on Aging meeting will take place on Tuesday, March 26 at 10:00 a.m. at the Westland Friendship Center, located at 1119 N. Newburgh Road.
Westland Historical Commission Meeting
  • The Westland Historical Commission will hold their monthly meeting on Tuesday, March 26 at 7:00 p.m. at the Westland Historic Village Park located at 857 N. Wayne Road. The monthly meetings are open to the public.
  • If you are interested in joining the Westland Historical Society, please stop by any Saturday from 1:00 - 4:00 p.m. to pick up a membership form and take a tour of the buildings which includes the Eloise Hospital Museum. Westland Historical Society forms are also available on the website at whvp66.weebly.com and their Facebook page.
Downtown Development Authority Meeting
  • The DDA will hold their monthly meeting on Thursday, March 28 at 8:00 a.m. at Westland City Hall located at 36300 Warren Rd. 
Westland Friendship Center BINGO game - on Tuesday, March 26 at 1:00 p.m., located at 1119 N. Newburgh Road. The Friendship Center now offers large, low-vision bingo cards. Visit www.cityofwestland.com, Senior Resources Department to view the calendar of all scheduled events.

Blood Pressure Screening - Stop by the Westland Friendship Center for a free blood pressure screening on Wednesday, March 27.   Blood Pressure Checks are done on Wednesdays from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. by the Westland Fire Department. It's an excellent way to keep track of your blood pressure.  Knowing there is a problem is half the battle - so keep on top of these important readings.  The Friendship Center is located at 1119 N. Newburgh Road. 

Westland Friendship Center presents Annual First Lady Charity Tea -  join us on Friday, March 29 at 1:00 p.m. at Westland City Hall Art Gallery, 36300 Warren Road. Tickets are $20 and can be purchased at City Hall or the Friendship Center at 1119 N. Newburgh Road. Tickets must be purchased by Tuesday, March 26.

Friday Night Movie at Westland Library - join us on Friday, March 29 at 6:15 p.m. at the William P. Faust Public Library of Westland in Meeting Rooms A and B for Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald. Snacks/refreshments are provided (donations accepted and appreciated). Westland Rotary Club hosts The Magic of Giving fundraiser - the Westland Rotary invites you to a magical event for the whole family on Saturday, March 30 at Wayne Memorial High School in the Stockmeyer Auditorium at 2:00 p.m. Enjoy card tricks and illusions by the Ann Arbor Magic Club with all proceeds benefiting the Westland Rotary Club and its charities. Compost Season begins - on Monday, April 1, the City of Westland will begin picking up compost for the season.  Compost is garden waste, grass clippings, hay/straw, leaves, pruning debris, bushes/shrubs and tree branches. The compost program does not accept animal waste, dirt, food scraps, pumpkins, roots/root balls, sod, stumps, vines or any landscaping material (gravel, garden wall, stone, mulch, wood chips etc.).   Branches are to be cut down to 4 ft. or less and should be no larger than 3 in. in diameter.  Branches should be put into small bundles and tied with rope or twine.  You may put out up to 10 bundles a week.
You may use compost bags or garbage cans for compost disposal.  The limit for compost collection is ten (10) compost bags or five (5) garbage cans, with no bag or can weighing more than 50 lbs.  We DO NOT accept compost in cardboard boxes or plastic garbage bags.  Compost is picked up the same day as regular trash.  A separate truck picks up compost.  Your compost should be separated from your regular household trash by 4 ft.  Mixed compost and trash will not be picked up.  To report missed compost, go to Service Request on the Department of Public Service page.  

Westland Municipal Golf Course opens for season - on Monday, April 1, the Westland Municipal Golf Course, located at 500 South Merriman, will open for the 2019 season. Visit www.cityofwestland.com for April/May golf specials. 

Westland Friendship Center presents The 2019 Elder Law Essentials Program - on Thursday, April 4 at 2:00 p.m. at the Friendship Center, 1119 N. Newburgh Road. Seating is limited, please call Jim Schuster, Certified Elder Law Attorney, to register at (248) 356-3500. This educational program will provide the legal "secrets" of successful aging, how to avoid family battles in probate court, how to avoid expensive and common mistakes in elder and estate planning, any many other topics. (No products will be sold or promoted)
