Message from the President
Dear Members and Friends,

As we embark on a new year, if you have not made all your New Year resolutions, may I suggest including volunteer work for 2019.  Bnai Israel offers a variety of opportunities to volunteer your time often more precious than your money.  Here are a few opportunities to think about for the coming year that will make our congregation a better place.

Under the guidance of Sue Mintzes, we provide a monthly meal for Hospice.  This is where we prepare and deliver dinner for those families that are caring for loved ones and family that are in Hospice care at Lower Cape Fear Hospice center.  I encourage you to participate and visit this facility during the year and see how important this work is and the respect and care provided by this amazing community organization.

Rabbi Kozlow oversees our monthly dinner at Good Shepherd Center where our group meets at 4:30 and prepares a meal for almost 100 guests of the Good Shepherd House who otherwise might not have a place to sleep or a meal to eat.  The gratitude and appreciation shown by those in need at these meals, and the opportunity to serve is rewarding beyond words and I encourage all to be a part of this project.

Additionally, we are putting together a corps of ushers and greeters for our Friday night Shabbat Services and Saturday mornings.  Those who volunteer for this group will make sure that our members and guests are welcomed into our home.  Please call me to become part of this group and to schedule the times you are available.

Volunteers for our Ritual Committee under Rabbi Kozlow's guidance are needed as we enter a critical time in American Judaism and discuss and evaluate our Jewish identity and traditions.  Contact Steve Stein if you would like to be a part of this group.

Scott Johnston is looking for volunteers to help codify and present a new voting procedure that might include Proxy voting.  Let me know if you are interested in this group.

Michelle Bannon is always looking for more volunteers to help with the "Sunshine Meal" program that provides meals for those coming out of the hospital, or at home and not feeling well.  Please contact Michelle to help.

We can always use volunteers for our Onegs, Kiddishes and Guest Chef Dinners.  Please check your calendars for Birthdays, Anniversaries, Yahrzeits, or any other occasion that might prompt you to host a Friday night or Saturday morning Oneg or Kiddish.  Contact Anita Leibiskind to get on the schedule.

We always welcome and encourage Haftorah and Torah readers for Shabbat morning.  Look up your bar Mitzvah date, and Rabbi Kozlow can help you find the date that this portion will be read this year.  Contact Alan Gerberg, our Gabbi, for scheduling.

Sisterhood, Men's Club and our very special Kava-notes are all looking for new members and welcome all those that want to participate.

This is just a start of where you can volunteer and help. Thanks to all those that lead and participate in these groups, and thanks to all of you that will reach out and join this year.  Contact Kate in our office weekdays from 10-4 and she will direct you to the appropriate person.

You can follow all these activities in our weekly Newsletter or on line on our web site.

Shabbat Shalom, and see you in Shul.
