#ExcellenceHappensHere: Seniors in the Medical Academy at Boynton Beach HS Earn Prestigious Industry Certification

Twenty seniors in the Medical Academy at Boynton Beach Community High School beat the national average when every one of them passed the National Academy of Sports Medicine Sports Medicine-Certified Personal Trainer Industry Certification (NASM-CPT) exam. 

The NASM-CPT exam, typically offered to students at a college level, has an overall pass rate of 61 percent across the country. "[The 100 percent pass rate] is unheard of, extremely impressive and truly illustrates their hard work, dedication, and relentless motivation," said Jessica Rhoades, the school's Medical Academy instructor. If you're a local educator, Nova Southeastern University would like to thank you for educating and preparing our youth for the future. During the Teacher Appreciation Expo, there will be free breakfast, massages, raffles, swag bags, a presentation on stress management, and much more!
TED-Ed: Student Mental Health
The month of May is Mental Health Awareness and Trauma Informed Care Month, and the District has proudly partnered with Healthier Delray Beach and Birth to 22: United for Brighter Futures to promote the importance of taking care of mental health in our communities. Research shows that one in four adults and one in five youth ages 13-18 currently live with a mental health condition. 

In this animated TED-Ed video, learn more about the effects mental health conditions can have on students and potential implications for classroom teachers. 
Got Orchids? We Do!
Think of them as young botanists. Palm Beach County middle and high school students are taking part in the Million Orchid Project, aimed at identifying rare and endangered orchids in our area, growing them in a lab, and reintroducing them into the local landscape.

Students from Tradewinds Middle School joined representatives from the  FAU Pine Jog Environmental Education Center in planting orchids around the Fulton-Holland E ducational Services Center last week.

May is Mental Health Awareness and Trauma Informed Care Month. #GetYourGreenOn!
May is Mental Health Awareness and Trauma Informed Care Month in Palm Beach County, and the District has partnered with Healthier Delray Beach and Birth to 22: United for Brighter Futures to support mental health awareness in our communities. 

Employees, schools and departments are encouraged to support the development of mental health and awareness by: 
  • Wearing  green on May 24 in support of the Get Your Green On community event to promote mental health awareness and action. 
     
  • Reviewing toolkits and resources for students, staff and parents that are available on the NAMI and Healthier Delray Beach websites. 
     
  • Becoming familiar with the Social and Emotional Learning Approved Programs list and the Matrix of Agencies with Behavioral Health Cooperative Agreements housed on the District website. 
     
  • Teaching the Adolescent Depression Awareness Program (HS), Erika's Lighthouse (MS) or Breaking the Silence (ES) lessons during the month of May. 
     
  • Attending a Youth Mental Health First Aid training, a 16-point inservice component available to all District staff. Classes are being offered at multiple times this spring and into the summer: May 8, 10 and 16, June 12, 13, 14, 19, 20, 21, 26, 27. Contact: Rick Lewis.
     
  • Attending the Student Mental Health and Wellness Conference on June 11. The conference is for District teachers, school counselors, school psychologists, and administrators. Registration is free and participants will receive training, conference materials and lunch. Contact: Dr. Michael Kane
     
  • Attending "An Evening With Kevin Hines" at the Palm Beach State College Lake Worth Campus on May 15. Mr. Hines is a renowned author and tireless champion for the causes of mental health, wellness and self care.
