Mississippi Attorney General Launches Students Against Violence App
March 11, 2019
Attorney General Jim Hood launched an app for students struggling with depression, bullying, drug use, and other problems common among teens.
The “Students Against Violence” app is a place where students who are struggling with thoughts of suicide or are in a home where there is domestic violence can turn to local and national resources to help them through such situations. The app includes categories for depression/anxiety, self-harm, suicide prevention, youth drug abuse, bullying, school violence, teen dating violence, domestic violence, underage drinking, and electronic cigarettes.
This project is a collaboration between General Hood and the Jason Foundation, with input from several state agencies and partners such as the Department of Mental Health, Mississippi Department of Education, Mississippi chapter of the National Alliance on Mental Illness, and The Partnership for a Healthy Mississippi. The Jason Foundation, Inc. is a group dedicated to the prevention of the silent epidemic of youth suicide through educational and awareness programs that equip young people, educators, youth workers, and parents with the tools and resources to help identify and assist at-risk youth. President and Founder, Clark Flatt, spoke at CWAG's Annual Meeting last year in Albuquerque on a panel titled, "Youth Suicide Prevention and Awareness." View his presentation below.

In return, the State has dismissed its remaining claims against the gasoline companies.

Opinion Analysis: Washington State Motor-Fuel Tax Violates Yakama Treaty
March 20, 2019
With a three-justice plurality opinion, a two-justice concurrence in the judgment and two dissents,
Washington State Department of Licensing v. Cougar Den appears unusually fractured at first glance. But the disagreements among seven of the justices are relatively small, turning largely on whether and why Washington’s motor-fuel tax really burdens the Yakama treaty right to travel. Only the dissent by Justice Brett Kavanaugh, joined by Justice Clarence Thomas, indicates a fundamental disagreement about the rules of tribal treaty interpretation.
