River City condos going back to apartments
River City condominiums in the South Loop will revert to apartments after more than three-fourths of owners finally voted to approve selling their units to Marc Realty for $100 million.  Marc Realty, which already owned the building's commercial space, first proposed a buyout in 2016, and again in 2017.  Under the building's declaration, the vote triggers sale of the entire condominium.

River City opened in 1985, an innovative work by architect Bertrand Goldberg that was intended as the first phase of a huge complex. It was not financially successful, and in 2002 was converted to condos.  A flood in 2010 displaced residents for weeks and prompted building repairs and changes that substantially increased assessments.

CMK buys Wabash Avenue site
The southeast corner of 14th & Wabash, used for two decades by Columbia College's theater department, has been sold to Chicago's CMK Development. Residential development seems likely; CMK has recently completed projects at 1333 and 1345 S. Wabash, and has built a number of other South Loop projects.

New Hilton McCormick Place
Ground was broken January 27th for Hilton's first triple-branded hotel at Cermak & Michigan. The hotel will hold 466 guest rooms over 23 floors and feature a skybridge to the convention center. It will operate under three Hilton brands: Hilton Garden Inn, Hampton Inn by Hilton and Home2 Suites by Hilton.

The property will contain a variety of dining options, including a Starbucks and two street-level restaurants accessible from Cermak, as well as a 22nd floor restaurant. The hotel is slated to open in late 2018.
