Workshops
NBOA 2-Day Workshop: Register by Mar. 29
Industry experts from the National Business Officers Association will provide the latest and most relevant information for your roles as an independent school leader or business office professional, tailored to schools in Hawai‘i. The first 3 hours of the workshop will cover fiduciary responsibilities and is intended for school leaders, business officers and trustees. A separate ticket is available for the Fiduciary Training, for those unable to attend the full 2-day workshop.
NBOA is the only national association focused exclusively on supporting independent school business officers and business operations staff, and fostering financial and operational excellence among independent PK-12 schools.

Youth Suicide & Bullying Prevention Workshop: April 29 - 30
Who Should Attend: Counselors, Deans, Principals, Vice Principals, Teachers, & Nurses.
This workshop will be run by Mental Health America of Hawai' (MHAH), as part of their Youth Suicide and Bullying Prevention (YSBP) initiative. Since its creation in 2008, over 20,000 youth and adults in Hawai'i have been trained in the YSBP curriculum. Based on local and national statistics, and real experiences of local youth, YSBP training increases knowledge and understanding of bullying and suicide, identifies risk factors and warning signs, and provides skills and resources for youth to help prevent or intervene.

What's New:
Innovation Scholarship: Deadline May 4
The Innovation Scholarship was created in honor of Robert Witt and Chris Van Bergeijk, the visionaries behind the Schools of the Future initiative. It will be awarded to a total of 6 persons - 2 Private, 2 Public, and 2 Charter School educators. The scholarship will cover the 2-day SOTF Conference registration fee  (please note that recipients will be responsible for all other expenses related to attending the conference, including transportation, airfare, food, and lodging) .
 
Eligibility:
·     PK-12th grade educator, currently employed at a Hawai'i Public, Private, Parochial, or Charter School.
·     Demonstrates innovation in the area of teaching or administration

2019 SOTF Student Presentation Call for Proposals: Deadline May 3
Student presentations will be on Friday, October 4. All student presentations will take place between 12:00pm - 1:00pm, during the timeframe that was previously allocated for Like-Minded Sessions. Student proposals should address best teaching practices and should inspire thinking about learning from the student's perspective. All proposals can include up to 3 students and must include 1 teacher who will serve as an advisor and point person. Please see the Form below!

Hawai'i Foodservice Hui Toolkit Launch Webinar: Mar. 27
The Hawai‘i Foodservice Hui Toolkit is a compilation of resources for independent school food authorities seeking to form partnerships for centralized nutrition program services and procurement. This webinar will provide an introduction and overview of the Toolkit with basic instructions for utilization, and the opportunity for Q&A with toolkit co-developer, Usha Kilpatrick. The Toolkit was developed out of the Hawai‘i Island Charter Schools Foodservice Hui pilot project that was conducted during the 2017-2018 school year. The partnership enabled charter schools to reduce the administrative and operating costs of their nutrition programs.

EPI Teaching Science with NGSS Program: Apply by Mar. 31
The Ecology Project International (EPI) Teaching Science with Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) course is a 9-day hands-on professional development experience for high school and college-level educators that will take place in Hawai'i this summer. This is a professional development opportunity for teachers interested in how to create and deliver authentic science lessons aligned with NGSS through experiential education, authentic conservation, and field research.

Writing Strategies to Help Students with Dyslexia Succeed : Apr. 2
Writing is a very complex process that requires many skills. Good writers plan, revise, and implement strategies when engaging in the writing process. Students with dyslexia may struggle with writing skills that require additional instruction and intervention. In this session, the presenter will discuss the evidence-based practice of Self-Regulated Strategy Development for improving the writing of students with dyslexia. The presenter will provide several strategies for elementary and secondary students.

Girls Go CyberStart: Registration Deadline Apr. 11
Girls Go CyberStart is an interactive series of digital challenges designed as an introduction to the cybersecurity career field. Over 300 Hawai'i high school girls played in 2018. Participants will compete in three stages for a chance to win cash prizes for themselves and their school, and scholarships for college. All girls in grades 9 - 12 can play.

Debate Judges Needed: Apr. 11 - 13
Parker School is seeking volunteers to participate as judges at the upcoming state debate and speech tournament; 30 judges per debate round are needed, and currently there are 12 per round. Judges are asked to stay present for the entire tournament and are welcome to leave after the last round of judging.

College Transition for Students with Learning Differences: Apr. 22
This is a free event presented by Assets High School, HIDA (Hawai'i Branch of the International Dyslexia Association), and Beacon College (Florida) for high school students and their families. The presentation will include information on: overcoming gaps in college readiness; navigating disability services in college; and, panel discussion featuring recent college graduates with learning differences.

Onizuka Day of Exploration: Apr. 27
This event offers more than 100 games, activities, and exhibits, both indoors and out. In addition, there will be STEM workshops on a wide variety of topics including robotics, energy, volcanoes, earthquakes, first aid, emergency preparedness, and much more. Advanced registration for the workshops is required, and with limited seating in each workshop, each participant can register for a maximum of 2 workshops. Hawai'i Pacific University's Preview Day: Apr. 27
HPU's premier open house event, Preview Day, is where attendees will meet and speak with faculty, current students, alumni, and staff. Tours of the Aloha Tower Marketplace and optional tours of the Hawai'i Loa Campus and Oceanic Institute will be given, as well. Attend, and you will receive a $500 visit grant if you are admitted and enroll for Fall 2019.

Dyslexia 101 and Tips for Helping Struggling Readers: Apr. 30
It is estimated that 15-20% of the population has dyslexia or another reading disability. They struggle with reading, writing, remembering, listening or expressing themselves clearly. Dyslexia affects every aspect of life - imagine those struggles as you go to school, work, grocery shop, or even “talk story” with your friends. In this presentation you will learn: characteristics of dyslexia; why dyslexic children struggle with schoolwork; strategies, tips and resources to help dyslexic children navigate for success in the classroom and beyond.

Keiki Day Creativity Contest: May 9
On this year's Keiki Day, a special edition of the newspaper will be published and distributed throughout Oahu, Maui, Kauai and Hawai'i. All school are inviteds to participate in the Creativity Contest, where students (grades K-12) may submit their art, creative writing, and essays for a chance to be featured in the special edition on each island. The theme for this year’s contest is “Dare To Dream” and winners (26 on Oahu, 6 on Kauai, and 6 on Hawai'i) will have their work published in the special Keiki Day edition. Each winner will also receive over $100.00 in cash and prizes. All schools on these islands will receive a letter and contest forms to be distribute to the teachers in their schools.

2019 KS Education Technology Conference: Register by May 17
The Kamehameha Schools Information Technology Division is hosting their 2019 KS Education Technology Conference, “What’s Your Y”. Space is limited to 400 participants, and more information about the keynote speakers, breakout sessions and conference will be coming soon.

Awakening Wisdom Summer Intensive: June 10 - 12
This school culture approach nurtures social emotional well being for educators and students, and supports HIDOE’s HĀ framework, and any school’s SEL efforts. In the 3-day Summer Intensive, educators will learn about the principles, values, and practices that transform classrooms and relationships to reflect the Four Rs of Awakening Wisdom: responsibility, respect, resourcefulness, and responsiveness. Classroom teachers will learn how to set up the Agreement System, a classroom management program where students take responsibility for their actions and learn from their mistakes. Coaches will learn how to embed the communication skills of empathic listening and responsible, responsive speaking to create collaborative, trusting working relationships with teachers and administrators. They will also learn how to respond effectively to conflicts.

Progressive Youth Leadership Academy: June 10 - July 19
This progra m is for emerging educators entering grades 7-12. The seminar will be dedicated to inquiry, reflection, and the development of leadership skills, under the guidance of Dr. Amber Strong Makaiau, Hanahau’oli Director of Professional Development, and Lia Woo, Hanahau‘oli Head of School.
Times: M/W/F 1:00pm - 4:00pm (no class June 11 and July 4)

The Hanahau'oli Teacher Collaborative: An Institute for Interdisciplinary Curriculum Design: June 24 - July 5
This 2-week institute includes theory and foundations, hands-on learning experiences, thematic lesson examples and observation, and built-in time for unit design with coaching, all provided by dedicated practitioners in order to increase student engagement and deepen learning. JK-12 educators from private, DOE, and charter schools are welcome, including those in resource/support roles, coaches, and administrators. This course may be taken by DOE teachers with a portfolio option to earn (3) PD credits. 
Times: Weekdays 8:45am - 3:00pm (no class on July 4)
Location: The Hanahau'oli Professional Development Center 
Cost: $1,350 including materials (discounts available for 2 or more participants from same school)
Global Educator Strand: Save the Date!
Punahou School's Global Educator Strand engages educators in the design of curriculum that promotes global citizenship. Participants will collaborate with educators from 25 schools and 11 countries accompanying their students who are participating in the Student Global Leadership Institute. Attendees will share their pedagogies and visions around global education, and through a facilitated design process, participants will also develop curriculum that is based upon resiliency, empathy, global awareness, and other characteristics of a global citizen in order to return to their institutions and implement.
