T-Bird Tip of the Week: Social Media Awareness for Students
Thanks to technology today's students can share ideas, opinions, pictures and videos with the global online community in a matter of seconds.

Sharing is good, except when it isn't. If we aren't thoughtful about how we share, we run the risk of hurting ourselves or someone else.

This year the Baraboo School District is posting a series of weekly tips, the "T-Bird Tip of the Week."  Parents, talk to your students about each weekly tip. Students, be mindful of your online identity. Let's start the conversation!

T-Bird Tip of the Week:
What Happens On the Internet STAYS On the Internet. Forever.

People of all ages make the mistake of thinking that the internet isn't forever. They think that if they delete something, it's gone as if it never existed in the first place. Click a button and - poof - it's erased.

NOT TRUE!

The internet is essentially a public record. It records everything you do; every website you go to, every post you share, every picture you upload.

Assume that anything you post online will be revealed to the internet at large at some point, either through a hack, because it was leaked by someone who follows your account, or because there was a privacy policy change on the social media platform.

Nothing is really gone from the internet. Even if you delete a picture from your account, it's still on the social media's server somewhere. Everything can be tracked by your computer or phone's IP address. But things that you don't want shared are most commonly shared by your own social media friends.

Before you post something, make sure it's something you're ok with sharing with the world.

Teens 'N' Theatre Presents 'Hurt People'
Teens 'N' Theatre (TNT) Presented the play 'Hurt People' to students in Mrs. Jensen's health classes at Baraboo High School this week.

Teens 'N' Theatre, launched by CAB (Creative Alliance of Baraboo) Theatre in 2016, uses " theatre as a creative medium to help teens open up dialogues about real life issues that they face." Scripts are written specifically for TNT to address current issues teenagers may be struggling with, like bullying, body image, rape culture, drugs and alcohol, xenophobia and suicide ideation.

'Hurt People,' performed by area teens in TNT, spoke to the issues of bullying, rape, homosexuality, teen suicide and domestic violence. After the play, TNT students led the group in a talk-back session where they asked specific questions of the audience, such as "how many of you have seen someone getting bullied," "who here has intervened on someone's behalf when they were being bullied," "and who knows of someone in the high school who is currently dealing with drugs or alcohol abuse" with the objectives of:

(1) Validation. Teens who see the performance and participate in the talk-back feel like the struggles portrayed are real struggles that they or their friends are facing.

(2) Coping Strategies. Teens who see the performance and participate in the talk-back can cite examples of good and bad coping strategies from the play and from their own lives.

(3) Empowerment. Teens who see the performance and participate in the talk-back can cite at least one way to help another suffering teen; an example of when to intervene, what to say, what to do, and when to involve an adult.

(4) Creative Niche. The teens who perform or help in other ways in the production feel accepted by the troupe, want to continue to participate in future similar efforts, and feel empowered to help their peers. This will help teens who are struggling to form a positive sense of identity.

The students in TNT will ultimately travel across South Central Wisconsin to perform plays for their peers and help open communication on difficult topics.

"The major premise of this project is that teens are in a very unique and powerful position to help other teens out of crisis situations (much more so than any adult no matter how perceptive, caring, or well trained). We believe that theatre can be a fun and safe way to demonstrate healthy coping mechanisms, empower teens to reach out to each other, and open up critical healing conversations. Wisconsin is currently number three in the nation for adolescent self-harm and number 20 for teen suicide (of which 80% are girls). Reversing these sad statistics will require innovation and quite possibly a little bit of drama. The problems faced by Wisconsin and Sauk County teens are not unique. If TNT is successful, it could have state-wide and even national significance."

For more information on TNT, or if you are a teen/have a teen who might like to be involved, visit Teens 'N' Theatre, email CAB Theatre, or call  (608) 620-5165.

Congratulations to the cast of 'Hurt People' on a great debut performance!

ABE Students Break Out of Bakery
Parents were relieved that their third grade students at Al Behrman Elementary made it home safe before the holidays!

On Friday, December 21st, students in Mrs. Blasing's and Mrs. Lorbecki's third grade classes found themselves locked in a bakery by a tricky gingerbread man. Students worked collaboratively to solve math problems to unlock the hidden keys and escape the bakery in time. All students were successful in cracking the code!
