St. Michael's Academy
:
It was a great week here at St. Michael's and all the students returned from vacation with their batteries recharged and ready to work. It's hard to believe we only have about seven weeks left in the school year!
The students had the opportunity this week to learn about keeping themselves healthy during a variety of events and presentations. Nurse Karen, with the help of the gym teachers, did a fantastic job putting on a health fair for grades 5th through 8th and arranging for speakers in the other grades and classrooms. We thank the many people representing hospitals, colleges, police and fire, dental practices and EMS for sending staff and students.
And don't forget about the new SMA Fit Families bulletin board. We are looking for students to bring in photos of their families engaging in some fun fitness! Send in a photo and you might be a lucky raffle winner!
Enjoy a nice weekend.
Peace,
Ann E. Dougal
Principal

From the Classroom of Mrs. Wozniakowski - Math
|
Geometry .... The Shape Of Things To Come
Often, I tell students that math is everywhere, from the things you count during your day to the time wake up and go to sleep. This is especially true when it comes to geometry.
In grade 6, we started our geometry units and we are looking at the world a little differently. Instead of seeing of students, we see students in line segments. We know that a plane is not just an airborne object but a flat surface spreading out to infinity. Our classroom clock is not just to tell time, but it is also a way to perceive multiple angle sizes. We know that shapes are everywhere in our lives and it would be difficult to measure them all.
Students in grade 7 took their geometry knowledge a bit further when they learned about similar figures. They noticed that similar figures have proportional side lengths and were able to calculate missing measures using algebraic equations. In addition, they used similar figures to indirectly find the length of a flag pole, an adult elephant, and a building without measuring.
So, when you look around your environment don't just see the objects... see the math.

Good Health Starts Early
|
Nurse Karen coordinated a variety of events and presentations this week for all grades to learn about keeping healthy.
PreK - Handwashing
Our 3 and 4 year old PreK students had a visit from Ms. Johnson, a nurse at Baystate Medical Center and SMA mom, who spoke to the students about the importance of hand washing.
She spoke about many things such as:
-Why it is important to wash our hands?
-How often we should wash our hands, especially before we eat, after we play outside, and after touching animals
-How we should wash our hands for 20 seconds by singing the ABC song
She also demonstrated the proper way to wash and dry your hands!
Kindergarten - Healthy hearts
Nurse Karen spoke to our Kindergarten students about what our hearts do in our body and the importance of keeping it healthy. The students enjoyed learning about the parts of the heart, how to feel their pulse and learning what things to eat to keep our hearts healthy!
Grades 1 and 2 -
Ms. Hurley who is a parent and nurse, came in to visit Mrs. Logan and Warbington's students to talk about her role as a nurse and shared some tips for healthy habits.
Dr. Jasmin Hutchinson, also a parent, is an Associate Professor at Springfeild College and spoke to the students in Ms. Collins and Mrs. Dean's room about exercise and health habits.
Grades 3 and 4 -
MedCare Emergency Health sent one of their ambulances with EMTs to our 3rd and 4th grade students.
Missy Brown, dental hygienist, visited the 3rd and 4th grade classrooms and spoke about the importance of good dental hygiene.
Health Fair
There was a multi-exhibit Health Fair for students in grades 5th through 8th in the gym. Exhibits ranged from the proper level of volume when using ear buds, to stress management, to drug identification and consequences, to proper oral hygiene.
And Congratulations to Our Basket Raffle Winner - Mia from Grade 6!

Connor's dad taught the student how to make butter and even brought in some freshly baked bread to eat with their butter!
Mia's dad works for the Salvation Army
Samantha's mom is an x-ray technician.
Noelle's mom is a nurse
Emilia's dad is a social worker
And Gio's mom is an esthetician.
