On Saturday morning, an email from Head of School Susan Tracy declared, “Fall Fest is still on—come out and enjoy the afternoon!”

From that moment, in spite of the morning rain, volunteers led by PSO Fall Fest Chairs  Nancy Attra, Alejandra Creixell, Martha Reid, and Sylvia Reyna sprang into action to make the final event preparations. Tables, music, and games were set up and waiting for the  more than 350 people that arrived for an afternoon of fun, good food, and fellowship.

Many thanks to all of the volunteers that helped to make this event a huge success, and a special thank you to Nuri Nuri for providing the music.

HIGH SCHOOL CORNER
Welcome back to the High School Corner!
To supplement our classical history studies, art historian and SCM parent Sarah Costello came to the High School to talk about the history, art, and architecture of Athens and Rome. Athens, the heart of Greek culture and goddess Athena's city, has many temples dedicated to the Greek gods, one of them being the Parthenon. The Parthenon was the soul of Athens, serving as both a place of worship for the patron goddess Athena and a place to strengthen community bonds through joyous festivals. Greek art and architecture also had a lot of influence on Roman artistic expression, which took a great deal of inspiration from Greek works. Yet as Roman civilization grew, it developed a distinct artistic identity. Dr. Costello emphasized the differences between the Greeks and Romans, as people often conflate the two when in reality they were disparate and fascinating peoples.

Dr. Costello also gave us some insight into some of the best things to do while on our trip, so we can have the best experience possible. Her visit got us even more excited to learn about these societies, and we are so grateful for her time.

Thank you for reading, and we will see you next week!

Our musicians in the SCM Ensemble (grades 7-11) have been hard at work practicing many new jazz, swing, and classical pieces. On October 19, the Ensemble had the opportunity to perform at a concert to support the music program at San Francisco Nativity Academy. Many thanks to SCM Alumnus Nicolas (Nico) T., who invited the Ensemble to participate in this event. Nico is working towards his Eagle Scout badge, and organized the concert as part of his service project requirement. Proceeds from the concert, which was held at St. John the Divine, will provide instruments and other items for San Francisco Nativity Academy’s pre-K through 2nd grade students.
