Reflection for Worship. . .

Baptism is a powerful mark that reminds us of our relationship to God, but unlike a tattoo or birthmark, it is invisible. This week in worship we hear of the Baptism of Jesus - a story that signals to us that Jesus has not only a special birth but also a commission to do God's work with the Spirit of God as his "engine".  Baptism is defined in our tradition as an outward sign of an inward and special grace, given by God.  Each of us has been touched by God's grace, though we may struggle to identify our gifts or how we can best serve others.  In worship this week we will consider what "shows" outwardly for each of us that we are recipients of God's care and compassion. Come join us in the Chapel at FCC at 10AM this Sunday!

Also This Sunday

We joyfully welcome Pamela Hopson back into our choir!  Pam is our returning soprano soloist and section leader.  Also this week while Musical Director Connie Washburn is away, Dr. Linda Zoolalian will be with us and we are grateful for her presence and talent!

Stewardship Update

If you wish to finish up your pledge or make an additional pledge for 2018, please date your check before Dec. 31, 2018 and leave it in the offering plate or drop off to Nina in the office no later than Sun. Jan. 13th so our Treasurer and Book keeper can close up the books for 2018.

If you have pledged for 2019 we thank you so much! If you have not yet pledged and plan to pledge, we ask that you email Barb Bonzo [email protected]
with your pledge or give her a pledge in writing on Sunday. Our pledges are an integral part of our church budget.

We currently have received some 34 pledges out of a possible 45 households for a total of $121,000.  Last year our pledged income was budgeted at $167,000.

Come Help Us Serve!

Our Bad Weather Shelter dates for 2019 are Saturday January 19th and Sunday February 17th. Please email the Co-pastors or speak with Discipleship Chair Joey Bland if you can help us serve a meal and set out cots on either of those dates. 12-16 people are needed each night...we begin at 5PM and finish around 9PM when we serve - the shelter is located on Lake just north of the freeway at the Covenant Church

Our Transition Continues

Staff and church members continue to sort and pack rooms in the building in preparation for our moving dates of January 16th and 22nd. New rooms at FUMC have heat and AC, new carpeting and paint, and internet service.  Next week the phone system will be installed and furniture will be moved. Banners for our current space and signs for our new leased space are being ordered to help visitors know who we are and how to find us after we leave this building.

Providence Christian College now occupies the former Co-Pastor office, the Nursery and rooms on the second floor.  The College continues to install internet and phone lines, remodel space in our former building and begin instruction in their classrooms.  Please be mindful during the week that construction is underway inside our building and workers are around - parking and finding a place to sit can be challenging!

Lamplighters 2019 Planning Meeting

Lamplighters Annual Meeting is Wednesday, January 23, 2019, 6:00 p.m., at Carrow's Restaurant in South Pasadena. We never seem to have a problem finding fun and interesting things to do/places to go, so please join us to plan for the rest of the year. Please contact Regina Meyers at 626.298.3184 for more information.

Rose Bowl Parade

On New Year's Day some 25 members and friends joined our new host congregation on folding chairs along the parade route in front of the First United Methodist Church!  A crew from their church served hundreds a pancake breakfast for $10 per person inside the church before the parade and we began to build new friendships and share new experiences.  Attached to our newsletter are photos of those who attended - and we are grateful for the hospitality of our new host congregation!

                                             Friends in Deed

The final Youth Outreach outing for 2018 was Sunday Dec. 16th from 11:30-4:00. We will evaluate what we did this fall and decide which things to continue in 2019. Many thanks to all youth and adults who helped out! The Youth Outreach Planning Committee is: Lu Burd, Meagan VanDeventer, Jeff Tyler, Neva Orr and Pastor Marlene.
