President's Message
Brian McAlexander, AIA, Sulllivan Bruck Architects
Greetings AIA Dayton!

We have an exciting time ahead of us. We looked ahead 5 years at the recent board planning session to many great things, including hosting the AIA Ohio Convention in 2020! The last time we hosted was the OVR Regional in 2011 and it was UNconventional!

We do have a big ask for our members. With so much coming we need your support to get it all done. We need you to contact your product representatives and thank the ones who sponsor AIA Dayton and ask the ones who don't to do so. We need you to step up and volunteer for committees and events.

Student Design is off and runnning, but they need architects for a few hours on Saturdays for the charrette and design reviews. We need committee members for 2020 Convention-- yes, we need to start planning this far out. Golf outing, Parking Day, Architecture week, PK Night, Community outreach, Advocacy, and many other activities need people to step up.

We heard you when you expressed concern that the convention would bump the design awards back a year, leaving three years between awards instead of the normal two. So we are doing the awards again this year, but at a smaller scale. We need committee members!

We will be developing a mentoring program for our emerging professionals and we would like our Emeritus and FAIA members to step up and help mentor the new generation of architects. If you have ideas for the program drop us an e-mail.
It’s a big year ahead. A big 5 years ahead.

With your help we can get it done and show everyone what a great chapter we have!

Event Recap
Ruetschle Architects Receives a Merit Award for the Dayton Metro Library, Vandalia Branch

The Vandalia Library is designed as the nexus of engagement that encourages active learning and a strong sense of place. Located next door to a high school, the Library celebrates the multiple facets of teen life supporting both academic and recreational activities. the library is located near an airport and a "destinations" theme was established through a sloped clerestory roof (emulating an airplane takeoff) and a rocket ship in the children's room. the clerestory roof highlights the marketplace, and showcases a custom dichroic glass sculpture which dynamically transmits reflected color throughout the library seamlessly integrating art and architecture.

Focus on Design Awards Jury comments included: The organization of the site and building program is a clear response to the surrounding site context. Inside, the "marketplace" analogy offers a nice balance of open social space with more focused spaces for learning, working and collaborating. This new library branch replacement sits very comfortably in its semi-suburban context. Its subtle references to the nearby Dayton Airport are most effective on the interior, which is spacious, navigable, and refreshing. Its well-lit interior does convey what is described in the design statement as a community living room. The simple block forms are integrated well with the clerestory spine, as depicted in the diagrams. - Jury Chair Thom Danckaert, AIA Grand Rapids

Many thanks to the event sponsors, without whom the awards program would not have been possible!

7 Trends That Will Shape Commercial Construction in 2019
Is a trend really a trend if it repeats year after year? That's a valid concern in the commercial construction world. For a competitive and fragmented industry that happens to be resistant to some of the rapid evolution noted in others, participants and observers are continually seeing some of the same glacial movements take center stage.
For example, the skilled labor shortage that has roiled the country isn't going anywhere anytime soon, despite increased educational and outreach programs. Automation, drones and increasingly comprehensive technology solutions are infiltrating projects one jobsite at a time. Offsite building is becoming more and more prevalent to guard against safety hazards on a worksite and deliver projects faster, cheaper and more efficiently. Mitigating risk is still possibly the most important aspect of a successful job.
