Thank You Keys Foundation

| ACCA, on behalf of the KEYS Foundation, delivered a shipment of bathrobes to the Baileys Community Shelter. |
Many thanks to the The Keys Foundation for the Homeless, one of ACCA's prominent partners, for arranging the generous donations from local hotels for the residents of the Baileys Crossroads Community Shelter. The ACCA team delivered 100 freshly laundered towels provided by the St. Regis Hotel in D.C. and 60 bathrobes provided by the Four Seasons Hotel in Georgetown.

Rebuilding Together 
2019 will mark the 30th year that ACCA has participated in Rebuilding Together (formerly Christmas in April). Over the past twenty-nine years, we have repaired and rehabilitated the homes of 123 low-income homeowners and non-profit housing facilities providing over 38,000 volunteer hours and insuring that low-income seniors, persons with disabilities and families with children have a safe, accessible and healthy environment in which to live.
This April we will work on two houses with financial and volunteer support from eight churches - Annandale United Methodist Church, Church of Jesus Christ of Later Day Saints, John Calvin and Providence Presbyterian churches, Ravensworth Baptist Church and St. Barnabas Episcopal Church. Snacks and lunch will again be provided by volunteers from Lincolnia Methodist Church and Queen of Apostles Catholic Church.
Even if your church is not one of the co-sponsors, you can still participate. Please consider volunteering or making a donation to ACCA to help us cover the cost of materials and other expenses. Checks should be made out to ACCA, noting Rebuilding Together on the Memo line. The cost of sponsoring a house is $3500.
At a time of increased economic stress, many homeowners are faced with choosing between necessary home repairs or paying for medicines, food or utilities. They need our help.

Homework Club News
ACCA is working with Lutheran Social Services to provide homework help to children from refugee families in the area. This project began in January and is off to a good start!
The families arrive at Peace Lutheran Church on Saturdays and volunteers are in place to help with homework for the children while their parents work on their English skills.
The Homework Club continues to grow. At our last gathering on February 23, we hosted 6 families with 19 youth among them.
Our biggest need continues to be volunteer drivers to pick-up and take families home. Even one-way transportation would be very helpful. Most of the families live near Peace Lutheran Church. Any new volunteers are required to have background checks and participate in a brief volunteer orientation from Lutheran Social Services. The next training will be on Saturday, March 23rd, from 8:30-9:30 am (leading up to that morning's homework club).
We continue to meet on the second and fourth Saturdays of each month from 10 a.m. - 11:30 a.m. We will not meet on Memorial Day weekend.

Crop Walk Update
Correction to the February 2019 report:
The 2018 Annandale CROP Hunger Walk raised a total of $20,785.23 (previously reported as $20,735.23). ACCA's local share, received from Church World Service (CWS) in January 2019, was $5,195.06.
2019 is a milestone year for CWS and for the Annandale CROP Hunger Walk. CWS is celebrating fifty years of CROP Hunger Walks -the first walk for hunger was held in 1969 in Bismarck, ND. Since then, millions of people have committed to ending hunger through the CROP Hunger Walk, bringing the valuable gifts of food and clean water to people around the world.
The Annandale CROP Hunger Walk will celebrate its 40th anniversary in 2019. The first Annandale CROP Walk was held in 1979 to raise funds for CWS, under the leadership of Nancy and Jim Boxall.

In Memoriam
ACCA gives thanks for the life of Judith (Judy) Frances Falkenrath, former director of the Child Development Center, who passed away on February 24 in Warrenton, VA. Judy dedicated her professional life to promoting quality early childhood education. She served as director of the ACCA Child Development Center (CDC) from 1998 through 2010. Judy loved the children at the CDC, and dedicated herself to ensuring that they received quality care and education that prepared them for elementary school. While she was director, the Center was accredited by the National Association for Education of Young Children. Under her leadership, the CDC began a partnership with the Wolf Trap Foundation, which enabled residencies for artists who worked with the teachers to promote school readiness through dance, music and drama. Judy was committed to furthering ACCA's goals to serve the needy in our community, and served as the president of ACCA, Inc., in 1997. After retiring from ACCA, Judy continued to serve children as a member of Fairfax County's Child Care Advisory Council. Our thoughts and prayers are with Judy's family.
We also give thanks for the life of Margaret L. Lowery, who passed away in February 2019 in Nebraska. Margaret served as chair of both the ACCA Food Panty Committee and the Family Emergency Committee. For many years, Margaret and her husband printed the ACCA newsletter at their Minuteman Press shop. As part of her work with the Family Emergency Program, Margaret served many years as the person in ACCA handling the Emergency Food and Shelter Program grants given to ACCA to administer for rental assistance. She became the real expert in Fairfax County! Our thoughts and prayers are with Margaret's family.

Nominate A Student Volunteer
Do you know an Annandale High School senior whose volunteer service has made a difference in our community? ACCA is accepting nominations for the 2015 Making a Difference Award, given each year to a graduating senior at Annandale High School. The award includes recognition during the school's annual Awards Day and a monetary gift.
Each nominee will be notified and asked to submit an essay describing why volunteering is important, what they have done, and the impact of their service on the community. The deadline for making a nomination is April 2.
The Making a Difference Award is made possible through the generosity of Mrs. Jina Kim of Evergreen Title Company, Annandale, Va.

Ministry Updates
Family Emergency Assistance served 20 households in February, providing $14,502 in emergency aid for rent, utilities, medical and other assistance. Many families had employment and health issues and included households that were affected by the federal government shutdown.
The
Food Pantry made 57 deliveries in February assisting 165 individuals. Twenty-five families at Bailey's Elementary received a 3 - 4 day supply of food to help them over the weekends when their school breakfasts and lunches are not available. The pantry is in need of volunteers to act as food captains, delivery drivers, and a chairperson. Contact Jean Rackowski at

The
Furniture Ministry made deliveries to 14 households and completed 14 pickups along with 9 warehouse donations in February. The 39 volunteers this month helped these families which included several with single mothers, children, senior citizens, and people with special needs. Two of the deliveries furnished apartments that were involved in the Grandview Apartments fires.
Annandale Meals on Wheels
During February, we delivered a total of 931 meals to 27 clients in February.
This program provides meals to homebound elderly, disabled, or convalescing individuals unable to cook for themselves.
