How Exercise
Keeps Us Young

A recent article in The New York Times summarizes a range of studies that demonstrate how our bodies respond to various forms of exercise.  Fascinating stuff! .

Home Safety Checklist

We probably all spend more time inside and at home during the in colder winter months.  This being the case, we need to take inventory to be sure our homes are safe!  Here's a checklist from AARP that may be helpful as you assess your home.

If  you find you need some help with minor repairs, call the Bergen Volunteer Center's Chore Service!  Chore's friendly crews of volunteer handymen (and handywomen) will do simple repairs at no cost except for the parts necessary to complete the job.  To make an appointment, c all 201-489-7790.
The Power and Joy of Reconnecting With Old Friends

There's nothing quite like meeting up with chums from your early days.

Here's an article from Next Avenue about the roads taken by various individuals to connect with good friends from long ago.
Benefits of Adult Day Programs

Here's a very brief video about the benefits of adult day programs for older adults who may otherwise be isolated in their homes.

Public Art Unveiled

Collages created by older adults at Bergen Family Center and SESCIL (Southeast Senior Center for Independent Living), working with professional artist Dan Fenelon, were unveiled during a ribbon-cutting just before Christmas. Entitled "Build A Village," the artwork is located in shadow-boxes on Daisy Place, between North Van Brunt and the Shoprite Parking Lot.  Have a look!

How To Identify Scams Targeting Older Adults

Fiscal Tiger is a collection of writers and designers (in Idaho!) who are aware of the precious nature of older adults' financial resources and the power they have in people's lives.  They aren't trying to sell anything - just offering a comprehensive guide on how to identify and avoid scams.
Ageism in Advertising

...it's rare employees ever reach retirement age. They're often squeezed out long before."

Ad Age, a  leading global source of analysis, news and data on marketing and media, recently ran an interesting article on ageism in the advertising industry.

"An advertising industry that's ageist...is able to very effectively translate that ageism into attitudes and behavior of society as a whole."
Re-Defining Retirement

The Bergen Volunteer Center  will have a  Redefining Retirement  "Matchmaker" stationed at the Englewood Public Library on Tuesdays, January 8 and February 12, from    1-3 PM.  The Match-makers help retirees find volunteer opportunities -- in nonprofits in Englewood or elsewhere in Bergen County -- that use their experience and skills while also meeting their interests and time availability.

If you can't make it to the Library at those times, you can check out the online searchable database of volunteer opportunities   here .   You can also contact Redefining Retirement Manager, Louisa Hellegers, at 201.489.9454 X 205 or  [email protected] .
