News From St. Sarkis Church

The Dominical Feast Of The Nativity & The Epiphany Of The Lord
On Sunday, January 6th, 2019, a large number of parishioners gathered at St. Sarkis Church to celebrate the Dominical Feast of The Nativity & Epiphany of Our Lord Jesus Christ. The Divine Liturgy was celebrated by Fr. Nareg Terterian, who also delivered a sermon.

Following the Badarak was the Blessing of Water Service, symbolizing the baptism of Christ in the River Jordan. The service was presided over by His Eminence Archbishop Oshagan Choloyan.  The Godfather of the Cross was Alexander Demirdjan, Drs. Edmond and Nyeree Demirdjan's son. Alexander is a Saturday School student, a Salt & Light Youth Group and an alter server at St. Sarkis Church. We are very proud of you!

As the service concluded parishioners received their blessed water, then processed downstairs to the main hall for a Saturday School Christmas Hantes.
Saturday School Christmas Hantes
Reported by Diana Demirdjan-Cava
In celebration of Christmas on January 6 th  family members and parishioners alike were treated to a heartwarming afternoon of Armenian songs, poetry and prayer performed by the students of the  St. Sarkis  Suzanne and Hovsep Hagopian Saturday School.

The older children beautifully performed classics like Joy to the World and Hark the Herald Angels Sing while the youngest students delighted us with   their enthusiastic renditions of Armenian favorites   "Gaghant Baba" , "Zankagner" and a solo performed by AnnaMarie Megerian.

Beautiful vocal solos were performed by the students, including AnnMarie Hazarian, Rita  Wanessian and Laurie Terterian.  The audience was further treated to a touching rendition of Silent Night performed on the clarinet by Alex Demirdjan who also served as  Godfather of the water blessing earlier in the day.

The children's angelic voices echoing in our sanctuary brought smiles and tears to everyone's eyes.  The Hantes was the perfect way to follow the joyous badarak and blessing of the water in celebration of Jesus Christ's birth and baptism.

The children did a wonderful job! However, this terrific performance  could not have put together without the efforts of the  talented Mrs. Haiguhi Megerian who accompanied on the piano, Mrs. Zepiur Ardzivian the school's musical director, principle Mrs. Nairy Zohrabian,  and of course  Rev. Der. Nareg Terterian as well as all  of the wonderful teachers and staff of the Saturday School.

The Saturday School children and their families are very lucky to have such a dedicated and hardworking staff to encourage and help our children learn and maintain their Armenian language, history and culture. Archbishop Oshagan praised Saturday school students after the Christmas Hantes.

Last but not least, everyone was treated to a wonderful reception in Main hall with a   spread of sweet and savory finger foods which was organized and sponsored by the generous and devoted  Saturday School PTA.

At the reception the children were treated to a special visit from Santa Clause who presented each of them with a gift. Santa Clause was  very tired after having visited children all over the world and learning how to say " thank you " in many languages,  the most important of all of course being Armenian.

CATHOLICOS DECLARES 2019 "YEAR OF THE ARMENIAN PRESS" (Crossroads)
His Holiness Aram I, Catholicos of the Holy See of the Great House of Cilicia, has named 2019 as "The Year of the Armenian Press." His Holiness writes that after a recent meeting with representatives of the Armenian Press in Lebanon, he deemed it appropriate to declare 2019 in honor of the Armenian Press. While acknowledging that the "Press" in modern times has a more expansive definition, the Catholicos emphasizes that he is speaking primarily about the print media that includes daily, weekly, and monthly newspapers and magazines. His Holiness gives an overview of the very earliest modes of print communication, and then focuses specifically on the very first Armenian newspaper (in India) and the subsequent growth of the Armenian Press in all parts of the world.

His Holiness directs the dioceses under the jurisdiction of the Cilician See to take this opportunity and during 2019 feature the history and role of the Armenian Press through various events including seminars, conferences, lectures, exhibits, and publication of books that focus on the importance of the Armenian Press in the life of the Armenian people.
Saint Sarkis Basketball - Girl "Appeal"
Reported by Edward Barsamian
If you followed this column, you are aware that we have a terrific Girls basketball team at Saint Sarkis.
Last year's Armenian Churches Sports Association champions, the girls started this year with a spotless 6-0 record and we are looking forward to another great finish.

Another thing we are looking forward to is building for the future, and to this end we are thankful to the parents of  Nina, Ani and Sophie who started to bring them to selected girls practices to learn the basics of basketball in preparation of the time when they will be of age to join our team.

This is where our "GIRL APPEAL" comes in.

We invite all parents with girls between the ages of 7 to 10 years old to participate in a program dedicated to teach basketball fundamentals in a fun and competitive atmosphere.

With enough young ladies participating, we will arrange for dedicated coaches and gym time, and continue throughout the summer as possible.

Presently practices take place on Fridays, from 7:30 to 8:30 at PS 94, located at 41-77 Little Neck Parkway, (take side ramp to Gym).

For the Girls.. a little exercise, a lot of fun, and a lifetime of friendships and great memories.

THE SECOND EPISTLE OF ST.PAUL TO COLOSSIANS (2:8-15)
See to it that no one takes you captive through philosophy and empty deceit, according to human tradition, according to the elemental spirits of the universe, and not according to Christ. For in him the whole fullness of deity dwells bodily, and you have come to fullness in him, who is the head of every ruler and authority.  In him also you were circumcised with a spiritual circumcision, by putting off the body of the flesh in the circumcision of Christ; when you were buried with him in baptism, you were also raised with him through faith in the power of God, who raised him from the dead. And when you were dead in trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made you alive together with him, when he forgave us all our trespasses, erasing the record that stood against us with its legal demands. He set this aside, nailing it to the cross. He disarmed the rulers and authorities and made a public example of them, triumphing over them in it.
