U.H. COMMUNITY COLLEGE FUTURE LEADERS TOUR RAIL OPERATIONS CENTER
A group from the University of Hawaii's Community College Future Leaders' Group recently toured HART's Rail Operations Center in Waipahu. Eldrin Bell from contractor Ansaldo Honolulu JV led the group on a tour of the facility's Operations Control Center, the primary operations hub of the Honolulu Rail Transit Project.
Prior to the walk through, HART Public Involvement representative Lena Kamae brought the group up-to-date with an information briefing, along with Public Involvement Specialist Traci Toguchi.

HART BOARD WELCOMES NEW VOTING MEMBER
After an extensive search, the HART Board of Directors has selected and approved Tobias Martyn as its ninth voting member. Martyn

replaces Board member Terri Fujii, whose term expired back in June.
Martyn was already serving on the HART Board at the time of his selection. He was a non-voting member appointed by State Speaker of the House Scott Saiki.
Martyn brings a wealth of knowledge to the position, with more than 30 years' experience
in the financial services industry in the areas of public finance, fixed income asset management, and institutional sales/trading. He has served on a number of boards and commissions, including the State of Hawaii Employee's Retirement System and the Department of Land and Natural Resources.
Toby Martyn's term runs through November 30, 2023.

HAWAIIAN NAMES FOR
HART's RAIL STATIONS
 Back in 2009 the Honolulu City Council, using its authority to "name or rename city parks, sites, or facilities", passed a resolution to recommend that the Honolulu Authority for Rapid Transportation use Hawaiian language in the naming of the Honolulu Rail Transit Project's 21-stations. The resolution noted that the use of Hawaiian station names should include "a name that describes the (station's) site or its use, function or purpose."
In keeping with that mandate, HART sought the input of an expert working group to examine community knowledge, ethnographic research, and oral accounts to develop culturally authentic and accurate station names. The proposed  Hawaiian station names recall forgotten place names, historic events, and significant sites in Hawaiian culture.
The working group finalized names for the first nine stations of the project, and are currently working on names for the remaining twelve. After a period of public input for possible revision, the names will be finalized to "perpetuate the traditions, culture, and history of Hawai'i and help knit the rail system into the fabric of O'ahu."

AT HART, SAFETY IS
ALWAYS A TOP PRIORITY
The Honolulu Authority for Rapid Transportation considers workplace safety a priority, both on its construction sites and in the areas utilized by the Project's administration teams. HART's Executive Director Andrew Robbins demands that all safety protocols by strictly adhered to at all levels of the Project, and he is also proud of the fact that HART's overall safety success record exceeds that of the national averages among similar types of projects.
As part of this commitment to safety for all Project employees, contractors, AND members of the public, each week HART publishes in this e-newsletter safety reminders for the public as they come into areas of HART construction or, general safety tips that people can use in their own places of employment or at home in their daily lives.
It's all part of HART's overall commitment to safety. Reminding the public of safety tips they  can use both near Project construction sites or at home, helps create a culture of safety and enforce an overall safety mind-set that all people, Project-related or not, can utilize to their advantage.
This month, we again remind Oahu drivers to limit distractions while approaching or passing near any construction site. With the holiday moratorium on HART's construction related road closures now over, construction will again resume at a necessary pace.
