A message from our president
Hello Friends,
Happy New Year.
And great news!
Thanks to you, members and donors of the Friends of the Cape Cod National Seashore, the Red Maple Swamp Trail in Eastham is fully repaired and open for walking.
In 2017, the Friends donated $25,000 to the park for this project.
The original estimate for the repair was $1.6 million. So the hope of replacing the rotted boardwalk was dim.

hen a crew from CCNS consulted with workers at Fire Island National Seashore in New York who had developed another way of doing the work that was much more cost effective.
With our $25,000, the Cape Cod National Seashore purchased a multi-purpose skidsteer loader. This equipment was also used to make the new path to the beach at Nauset Light Beach.
Because of you, this collaboration continues to benefit all of us, residents and visitors. Job well done, Friends members. A grand reopening of the boardwalk will be scheduled for the spring.

Government shutdown alert
 The staff of the Cape Cod National Seashore are on furlough due to the lack of budget appropriations. Please consult the daily news about progress in resolving this issue. Park buildings are closed until funding is approved.
Movies will be postponed, but not cancelled as necessary due to the closure of Salt Pond Visitor Center.

News from the Friends
Friends supports accessibility improvements at Buttonbush Trail
Volunteers joined seashore staff on National Public Lands Day in September to spruce up the Buttonbush Trail in Eastham.
This trail includes Braille signage and a guide rope to help people with low and no vision experience a seashore trail.
After consulting with Sight Loss Services, Inc., Friends Adopt-a-Trail Coordinator Warren Mumford and Sue Moynihan and John DeFoe from the seashore developed a project to:
- Replace rotted posts and the Styrofoam markers indicating a Braille exhibit to read;
- Paint the tops and faces of steps and water bars white for visibility'
- Replace the step alert markers with a higher contrast color tape.
Nine volunteers joined seashore staff to carry out the project, which has vastly improved the experience for visitors. Thank you volunteers and Friends!

Cut, Pile and Burn
The Cut, Pile and Burn group meets regularly to cut over-growth, clear, and burn what they have collected. This is a vital endeavor and a great hands-on way to contribute to the ongoing management of resources at the park.

Winter Movie Festival
This year's festival features fan favorites from previous years. Join us for these timeless classics shown on a theater-size screen with surround sound. All movies are free, accessible, and sponsored by Friends of the Cape Cod National Seashore.
They will be presented in January and February at the Salt Pond Visitors Center, 50 Nauset Road, Eastham, Sunday afternoons at 1:30 pm.
If the government shutdown continues,
performances will be postponed.
