New Semester - Fresh Start
Many of us use the turn of the calendar to make well-intentioned resolutions. Students often have similar feelings when beginning a new semester. It's a chance to start over, do better, stay healthy, and find balance.

But sometimes even with the best of intentions, students don't always know how to find support that can help lead to success. So this is a reminder of some WMU resources to share with your student for a positive and healthy semester.

The Bronco Study Zone offers a comfortable learning environment with tutoring and academic support resources.

The   Academic Resource Center  offers tutoring, college success seminars, writing assistance and overall academic support.

The Writing Center  helps students to become better writers with one-on-one assistance, whatever the writing project.

If your student is having difficulties with an on-campus living situation, the housing  staff is dedicated to helping resolve conflicts. Encourage your student to contact an RA or the residence hall office staff with any concerns.

Sindecuse Health Center,   Counseling Services  and the Student Affairs case manager  are committed to supporting your student's good health and welfare.

And if you're not sure where to turn or how to advise your student, Family Engagement is always willing to help and get you connected with the appropriate person, department or resource.
Housing Sign Up
New and returning students interested in living on campus can sign up for fall 2018 housing this month. The advantages to being on campus include convenience, forming social networks, and live-in staff available to help when needed.

Returning students sign up begins Jan. 22 and will run all semester. Returning students (sophomore status or higher) who sign up for a single room and have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 at the end of spring semester are eligible for a single room at the price of a double room.

First-year and transfer students can sign up starting 10 a.m. EST Jan. 31, 2018. The date your student signs up determines their Room Selection Group, which is how they choose their residence hall and room during the summer.

There's no deposit required to sign up for housing. If your student is still deciding schools, they can still sign up for housing early to get a good Room Selection Group number. Students MUST notify Residence Life by June 1 if they are not coming to WMU to avoid cancellation fees.

To sign up, students log into their GoWMU account. Once in, look for the "My Self Service" box on the left. Click on the arrow in the "All" bar and find the "Residence Life Housing" link. Click the link to open the Housing and Dining Application.

The housing contract is for a full academic year (fall + spring semesters). Please be aware your student is entering into a legally binding contract with the University by e-signing it. If your student is under the age of 18, a co-signature is required. An email will be sent to the parent or guardian address your student provides. That individual will receive an email with a link and code to electronically sign the housing contract.

The Housing and Dining digital guide will be on the housing home page later this month.
2018 Spring Recruiting Showcase
Encourage your student to attend a fair in February to learn about career possibilities. Job-seeking students should research each fair based on the jobs they are seeking.

These opportunities are a great way for freshman and sophomore year students to see how job fairs work without worrying about interviewing! And we welcome student volunteers.

Reminders
Health Insurance Many employers switch or update insurance plans as of Jan. 1. Please make sure your student is aware of any changes that might affect their health benefits and provide your student with a new insurance card. If your student needs an insurance plan, Sindecuse offers helpful information.

Flu Shots  It's not too late to get a flu shot. Encourage Flu Patient your student to make an appointment at Sindecuse Health Center. Added insurance for a healthy semester!

WMU Email Remind your student to check their WMU email account regularly. We communicate with students ONLY through a WMU email address and we don't want your student to miss important information, action steps or deadlines.
