State Urges Californians to Save Energy to Avert Power Outages
With triple-digit temperatures forecast for the coming week, state officials are calling on all Californians to reduce their energy use to prevent power outages. Key to helping relieve the pressure the heatwave is putting on the energy grid is limiting energy use from 3 p.m. to 10 p.m.—meaning air conditioning, electric car charging and other energy-intensive technology. Newsom Lays Out New Economic Recovery Priorities to Help Businesses During Pandemic
Gov. Gavin Newsom laid out new priorities Wednesday for how he wants California’s economy to move forward, as businesses struggle and unemployment remains high because of the Covid-19 pandemic.
The governor is still watching for the number of hospitalizations and the rate of new Covid-19 cases to lower before the state could reopen some of its business sectors, like indoor dining and bars. Read more.
California to End Eviction Protections as Lawmakers Mull Fix
California will resume eviction and foreclosure proceedings on Sept. 2, stoking fears of a wave of evictions during the coronavirus pandemic unless the governor and state Legislature can agree on a proposal to extend protections into 2021. The Judicial Council of California voted 19-1 on Thursday to end the temporary rules that had been in place since April 6... A survey from the U.S. Census shows more than 1.7 million renters in the state could not pay their rent on time last month. Read more.
With Data Backlog Cleared, California Covid Cases Officially Decreasing
California has cleared the backlog of nearly 300,000 coronavirus test results that has hampered its virus strategy over the past two weeks, Gov. Gavin Newsom said Friday, and officials got the news they were hoping for: COVID-19 is trending downward in the state. Read more.

The California Manufacturing Technology Consulting (CMTC) is offering a program for small manufacturers. This program's entire focus is on helping small family owned manufacturers survive the shock of Covid, and to set them up to thrive going forward. Through this CMTC program, manufacturers are provided a Business Stabilization Consultant who will conduct a brief assessment of the company's current state. Worker 'Right of Recall' Protections Slowly Moving Through California Legislature
Workers at certain California travel- and hospitality-related businesses who were laid off because of the Covid-19 pandemic would have to be given preferential treatment when rehiring begins under a bill introduced by Assemblymember Ash Kalra... AB 3216 is a substantially trimmed-down version of the measure introduced in March on the day the California Legislature went into a prolonged spring recess because of Covid. The original version would have expanded sick leave and family leave rules for workers during times of a health emergency. Read more.
