From the ICF-NJ President
Hello ICF-NJ coaches! It's countdown to International Coaching Week (ICW) May 7 to 13, 2018!
ICW is an annual weeklong global celebration of the coaching profession. During the week, coaches around the world offer a variety of activities and pro bono services in their local communities to share coaching's impact. From educational sessions to coaching demonstrations to panel discussions, ICW offers something for everyone.
It was first started in 1999 by ICF Master Certified Coach Jerri N. Udelson, and its purpose is to educate the public about the value of working with a professional coach, and acknowledge the results and progress made through the coaching process.
Here in New Jersey, we'll celebrate ICW by partnering with the
Girl Scouts Heart of New Jersey (GSHNJ).
On May 7, we'll provide a webinar to their leadership, helping them to understand what coaching is and how it can benefit their organization. Please watch this two-minute video that we'll share with them as part of our webinar. You can use this with your potential clients as well!
https://vimeo.com/136645385
Following the webinar, we'll provide pro-bono laser coaching sessions to all interested GSHNJ organization, troop, and other leaders. (In case you're not familiar with laser coaching, it's a speed coaching process that typically takes around 30 minutes or less. It's a no-frills, solutions-oriented coaching process that helps you get to the core of a client's challenge or problem within minutes.
Coaching will take place on:
Wednesday May 9, 9:00 am-12:00 pm
Thursday
May 10, 6:00 pm-9:00 pm
Saturday, May 12, 9:00 am-12:00 pm
With much gratitude for all you do,
Andrea Harvey
2018 ICF-NJ President

Greetings from Your Director of
Community Programs
Introducing the ICF-NJ Virtual Community Group!
We're excited to announce the launch of a Virtual Community Group in May! As most of you know, we currently have in-person community groups in the Princeton, Monmouth County, and the Somerset/Morris/Essex areas. This new virtual group is specifically designed for coaches who don't currently live in an in-person group area, and is a way to do so from the comfort of your own home. (Of course, all coaches can participate in as many community groups as they'd like.) Our virtual community group sessions will be led by three rotating facilitators, Lynne Roe, Marc Strano, and Regan Cohen Elliott. The virtual sessions will be held the second Tuesday of each month, from 11:00 am to 12:15 pm.
Please mark your calendar for our first session, Tuesday, May 8, and future sessions as well:
May 8, June 12, July 10, August 14, September 11, October 9, November 13, and December 11, 2018.

Then join us for an informative evening to increase your knowledge of personality assessments and their uses, hosted by Caliper Corporation.

Why I'm a Member of ICF-NJ
My ICF Journey, Part Two
by Chapter Past President Tony Calabrese
At the end of Part One of this column in the April issue, I mentioned that I had been asked to take on the role of Chapter secretary in the spring of 2010. While as a new coach I felt a bit concerned about taking on such a role, I realized I was a 30-year corporate professional, so not quite a rookie at such responsibilities. Besides, I had been secretary of my condominium association for around a decade at that point, so how much harder could this be? So after a meeting (at a Garden State Parkway rest stop!) with the outgoing secretary Dara Stieglitz, who was moving out of state, I started my new position as Chapter secretary. When Autumn, 2010 rolled around, my phone rang again. This time it was the Chapter's Immediate Past President Lynn Schaber, and the call went something like this: "Tony, you've done a done a great job as Secretary, an important role. But what the Chapter really needs is an incoming "President-Elect," and we feel you'd be perfect for the role. It's a three-year commitment, (one year as "president-elect," one as "president" and a year as "immediate past president") but we know you're up to the task. Will you do it for your Chapter? And that's how being ICF-NJ president became part of my resume. Those early years of my coaching career and my commitment to the Chapter became the foundation for both my practice today, and how I conduct my coaching and entrepreneurial business life. Serving as Chapter president opened me up to so much I could not even imagine. In my early years with the Chapter, I would hear about the Master Certified Coaches of the ICF. I knew the names of some, especially those that lived in New Jersey, but I never figured I would meet them, or that they'd actually want to have coffee with me, a neophyte in the industry. They were appreciative of the role(s) I had taken on in the Chapter. They offered their support and help, whether it was to be a presenter, provide insight, or just hear me out if I had to weigh a tough decision. I'll never forget that. Additionally, joining ICF gave me the chance to attend three Global Conferences and one Converge event, meeting with coaches from around the world, helping me realize I was part of something that was a lot bigger than I could imagine. That our Chapter is celebrating 20 years this year as an ICF Charter Chapter is terrific. I would remind all members that it's your lifeline to your profession. It's where you'll find people who'll understand what you do for your clients and what you're all about. Becoming an active chapter member, from the infancy of my coaching career, proved to be one of the best decisions I've ever made.
"Why I'm A Member of ICF-NJ" is now a regular column of the ICF-NJ Coach Connect newsletter. If you'd like to share why you're an ICF-NJ member and the benefits you get from it, please contact Marcella at [email protected].
