Infants' Advances in Speech Processing Play Role in Language-Cognition Link
[Source: Science Daily]

According to the researchers, this reveals that as early as 3 to 4 months, infants' advances in speech processing play a central role in their establishment of a language-cognition link.
Previous work in the researchers' lab had found that for infants at 3 to 4 months, listening to both human vocalizations (their native language) and nonhuman primate vocalizations (lemur calls) boosted cognition. But it remained unknown whether all human languages would have this advantageous effect.

Being in Nature Can Boost Kids' Development, Learning
[Source:  Psych Central]

Spending time in nature boosts children's academic achievement and healthy development in a variety of ways, according to a new analysis published in the journal Frontiers in Psychology.
"It is time to take nature seriously as a resource for learning," said lead author Dr. Ming Kuo, associate professor in the department of natural resources and environmental sciences at the University of Illinois. She added that the "trend of increasing indoor instruction in hopes of maximizing standardized test performance may be doing more harm than good."

At SeaWorld's Water Park, An Autism-Friendly Approach Takes Root

Past the colorful playground where children splash at Aquatica Orlando, a new quiet room tries to mute the laughter and the music from the loudspeaker when everything becomes too overwhelming.
A few feet away, one of several expanded map signs breaks down the rides, rating them by the five senses, to give parents a warning if a ride may not be the right fit for their child.

Study Probes How Concussion Impacts Deep Brain Structure
[Source:  Psych Central]

Concussion researchers have long suspected that damage to the brain's corpus callosum could be the underlying reason behind certain side effects of concussion, including dizziness or vision problems.

Their hypothesis states that damage to the corpus callosum - a thick bundle of nerves that connects the brain's two halves - could affect coordination between these halves, but the theory has been difficult to prove.

How Making Time for Mindfulness Helps Students
[Source: Mind Shift]

Not knowing the answer to a question when you're called on in front of the entire class. Forgetting your homework. The kid behind you pulling your hair. School poses a lot of stressful moments, but how children (and teachers) react to them can make all the difference.

A new study suggests that mindfulness education - lessons on techniques to calm the mind and body - can reduce the negative effects of stress and increase students' ability to stay engaged, helping them stay on track academically and avoid behavior problems.

Physical Activity and Memory Performance in Children
[Source:  Your Therapy Source]

A recent article in the Psychology of Sports and Exercise reported on a study examing the effects of specifically designed physical activities on children's foreign language vocabulary learning and attentional performance. The researchers examined physical activity and memory performance in children.

The participants included 104 children, 8-10 years old, who were divided into three groups:

Sticky Note Collage
[Source: Brick by Brick]

Making a collage is a standard type of activity in preschool and kindergarten rooms. Assembling a lot of different materials to create a larger visual item is a time-honored art form. In fact it is so familiar that often we overlook it as a creative endeavor. But preschoolers still enjoy making collages and experimenting with this visual art form.

As a working mom, life is a perpetual balance of domestic duties, professional tasks, and child-related entertainment. When my son was young, I often attempted to maintain this balance by entertaining him with toys, books, and activities while he was awake and then feverishly trying to get all of the household chores done while he napped or after he went to bed each night. This worked well...except for the fact that the chores were rarely completed, I got way too little sleep, and I tended to be a bit, um, cranky due to both of these things.

OT Corner: Matching Colors AND Improving Fine Motor Skills!
by Anne Zachry OTR/L

The parent workshop was a great success. I was so excited to share ideas and suggestions that parents will be able to carry out with their children to work on a variety of skills. I could tell that the parents were eager to learn as much as possible, and that really excites me, because I'm a true believer in working together as a team for the children.

There is a cute activity that I shared in the workshop that addresses fine motor skills and coordination, while also teaching a child how to match various colors. All that you need for this project are an ice cube tray, a small bag of glass gems (found at dollar stores.), sticky back foam sheets (found at craft stores or  Amazon), tongs, and a pair of scissors.

I remember being excited and nervous when I scheduled my first interview.  It was my first real, big girl job interview...but I didn't really know what to expect. What questions would they ask? Should I ask questions? What was I going to wear ?!  With interview season approaching I thought I would offer some tips I have learned over the years being both the interviewer and interviewee.

School Psych Corner:  Mental Health In Schools: A Hidden Crisis
[Source:  NPR]

Part One in an NPR Ed series on mental health in schools.

You might call it a silent epidemic.
Up to one in five kids living in the U.S. shows signs or symptoms of a mental health disorder in a given year.
So in a school classroom of 25 students, five of them may be struggling with the same issues many adults deal with: depression, anxiety, substance abuse.
