President's Message

Dear LPGA Women Who Play DC Members,

No, you're not dreaming, these are our new colors and our new name! So why did it occur, what does it mean, and how will it benefit us?

Our organization, Executive Women's Golf Association (EWGA), has ceased to exist, but only in that name and as a stand-alone group. According to President Jane Geddes, an opportunity presented itself to do something bigger and better for all of us.

EWGA was a stand-alone association for women golfers for 27 years. It was pretty successful, we might add. However, opportunities to grow and innovate were few and far between for a small stand-alone golf group. EWGA was formed in an earlier era as a way for businesswomen to advance in a male dominated workforce, where much of the executive networking and business deals were done on a golf course. However, while we were advancing our careers, there is a whole new world of female golfers who are looking to play more often and in good company.

Accordingly, Jane used her LPGA connections and formed a new LPGA entity. We are now an entity affiliated with the LPGA Foundation, called LPGA Women Who Play. Hate or love the name, this really is an exciting development. Who can deny it's impressive that our new league is officially affiliated with the LPGA as an entity for amateur women golfers.

Being an official LPGA affiliated entity will make us more attractive to grow the membership and widen the ever-growing tent of women golfers. In addition, an important component for any non-profit organization is: Sponsorships! Our plan is this will open more sponsorship doors for both our main league and our chapters. We exist off our dues, so every extra dollar means more discounts, more options, more affordable events, etc.

Talking about events: Thank you, BJ, for booking all these amazing golf courses for the summer! We had a great start with the Cha-Cha practice round at Musket Ridge this Saturday. What a great turnout! And our leagues are starting, so sign up, if you haven't already, and enjoy your rounds of golf. Even if you're not playing well on any particular day, hey, you're on a golf course!!

2018 Weekend Events

Where are you playing golf this year? We have so many great golf courses on our weekend schedule. It's so easy, you sign up and pay and don't have to worry about finding a foursome or making a tee time. If you want competition, sign up for tour and see how you stack up. If you want to play a more relaxed round with your friends, sign up for casual and you can indicate who you want to be paired with.

Plan ahead! Usually you can register one week ahead, but we have to cut off sign-ups once we reach the cut off.

LPGA Women Who Play DC League Attendance Rules

The season has kicked in and many of the leagues have quite a few more players than last year, including substitute players. This makes the available tee slots very important. If you have signed up for a tee time, you need to ensure that you let either the Captain or the course know if you can't make it as soon as you know. Make sure you have their phone numbers in your cell so you can contact them prior to your tee time. This courtesy not only 1) allows other players to fill in if notified soon enough; 2) keeps the Captain from worrying and trying to shift players around at the last minute thinking you are still coming, just running late; 3) allows the Captain to shift players to ensure no one ends up playing alone; and 4) keeps the course from complaining we are not filling our reserved slots. We understand that everyone has those days where situations happen and play plans change. Just remember to notify the Captain or the course Pro Shop. For those that schedule a tee time and do NOT inform either the Captain or Course that they will not be playing prior to their tee time, after the second occurrence, you will be required to show up at the course to see if there is a slot open vice be able to register ahead for a time. Simple courtesy will have everyone on the course and having a great season!

2018 Chapter Championship (Cha Cha)

The 2018 Chapter Championship (Cha Cha) will be held on Saturday, July 7th at Musket Ridge Golf Club in Myersville, MD.

Are You Missing Out?

So you go to the Chapter Web site to register for a league. But, from the Home page, when you click on the link for leagues there is no way to register. Or you go to the calendar to register for Weekend Events, but there are no weekend events listed. What is going on?

If you have experienced something like this, then more than likely you are not logged in to LPGA Women Who Play/formerly EWGA. The clue that you are not logged in is that you will see a blue button in the upper right hand corner of the web page that is labeled "Log in to see member only content".

If you do see that button, then click on the button and log in to LPGA Women Who Play/formerly EWGA. Once you have logged in you will be returned to whatever web page you were on when you noticed the button and you will be able to register.

HOW CAN YOU HELP?

By now you have seen several Chapter articles advertising the Play for P.I.N.K. (PfP) Tournament scheduled for the August timeframe. Hopefully you have signed up to play on a team or as a single to be paired with a team. Besides playing in the tournament, which will be a fun-filled day of golf, laughter, camaraderie and fellowship, our membership of 300+ strong can support this cause in additional ways. How you ask?

The PfP Committee challenges each member in our Chapter to consider supporting at least one of the options below! Be a super-start and support several!

* Sign up to be a Hole Sponsor! For $100 you get a sign with your name, logo (if applicable), and 5 tickets toward the 50/50 Raffle! Our chapter website is where you can register and designate the hole you wish it to be displayed!

* Sign up a Second Team! Challenge yourself and those on your team to solicit non-chapter members to sign up and play in the tournament. Do you have co-workers, neighbors, or other family members who love the game of golf? Convince them to form a team; the more the merrier! We have 144 slots to fill!

* Make a Single Donation! Are you a business owner? Consider having your company make a single, tax-deductible donation to the Play for P.I.N.K. organization towards our Chapter's fundraising goal of $3,000. In doing so, your name and company will be highlighted at the tournament via banners and recognition during the Black Tee Buffett Dinner.

* Donate to the Regular Raffle! Do you have golf related items you could donate for the tournament's Regular Raffle? What about your favorite bottle of wine or perhaps your favorite bottle of whiskey, bourbon, vodka? These items as well as other items are a huge success and generate a lot of interest when drawing the winner raffle numbers. Contact the Event Captain or Ms. BJ Barger with these items.

SUCCESSFUL Golf Clinic + Happy Hour Proceeds

Support our 2018 PfP Fundraising Golf Tournament

On April 5 ^th, several chapter members showed up at Westfields Golf Course for a 45-min golf clinic followed by happy hour in the clubhouse. The golf pro Patrick Gogoel spent 10 minutes with each analyzing one aspect of their game and then offering a suggested improvement. Each attendee spent time practicing their new technique on the golf range. Afterwards all participants headed to the clubhouse where drinks at the bar were discounted in honor of the Play for PINK fundraising effort. All in attendance thoroughly enjoyed themselves and discussed having another clinic halfway through the golf season. Those in attendance were Lisa VanDivender and her husband Tim, Florence Daniels, and Kim Litherland. See pictures below!

This initiative raised $90 and will be used toward offsetting costs associated with the fundraising golf tournament (items for the goodie-bag, prizes for the skills contests, or items for the silent auction).
