Principal's Message
April 27,  2018
Dear Families and Friends of OLQP:
Picasso said that every child is an artist. While some schools have abandoned fine arts programs, the importance of the arts is not lost at OLQP. Every time the brain is engaged in a new or complex activity, the brain creates new connections between cells. Fine arts enhance creativity, decision making, perseverance and focus. Performance arts develop confidence. Fine motor skills and visual-spatial skills are also developed through art.
Students have opportunities throughout the year to experience a variety of activities. The Christmas programs engage all of the students while Spring Play is a middle school project. Band is offered for fifth through eighth grade. Select Choir is offered as well. In their writer's workshop activities, students share pieces of writing including poetry. Teachers and parent volunteers coach students in creative writing, music memory, and art competition prep. Throughout the year, students create artwork as well. For the final school-wide project based learning activity of the year, classes choose an artist to research. They study the artist's techniques and known artwork. Then, they create their own masterpieces using their interpretation of the artist's style. All of this creativity culminates in Art Gallery Night on May 17, from 6:00-7:30 p.m. The halls will be alive with line, shape, texture, and color. Be sure to come celebrate your child's accomplishments!
The Beatitudes have been a recurrent theme this year. We started studying them as part of learning about the founder of the Incarnate Word and Blessed Sacrament order. Students have been challenged to use artistic expression to explain the meaning of one or more of the Beatitudes. They may use art, poetry, prose, drama, or another medium to express and explain the meaning. Their products will be shared at morning prayer. As Einstein said, "Creativity is contagious; pass it on."
Thank you for being part of the mission and ministry of Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic School.
Ad Majorem Dei Gloriam,
