Co-Curricular Event Attendance Encouraged
Good Sportsmanship is Emphasized

The Athletic Directors and Principals of the Badger Conference want to invite all students, parents and community members to attend as many of our co-curricular events and activities as possible. The students who participate in our programs and the coaches/advisors who give countless hours and energy working with these students deserve and appreciate positive support from their peers and the community. The administration, coaches and students of the Badger Conference want the games/matches/events to be positive for all. The Badger Conference and its school reputations are impacted by the conduct of spectators at co-curricular events. Our conference has worked hard on sportsmanship and it is paying dividends, as the Badger conference has developed a very good reputation around the state. However, we need your assistance to keep it that way. Please keep the following in mind as you attend events this winter:
  • Cheer positively for your team
  • Be gracious in winning and losing
  • Keep contests in perspective
  • Being openly critical of players is unacceptable (please consider how you would feel if your child was on the receiving end of negative comments)
  • Being openly critical of game officials is unacceptable (without officials, there is no game)
  • Courteous, respectful and sportsmanlike behavior is a must for spectators at all times
  • Themes nights and cheers should not mock the other team or its fans
  • A safe, positive and sportsmanlike environment is our main objective for students, as well as our spectators Read more...

Late Bus at OHS
The Oregon School District will provide a late bus for students who wish to stay after school for clubs or activities. This bus will depart from the OHS bus lane at 5:00 pm each day. This would open the door for students to attend homework club, or other clubs and activities until 5:00 pm. This will begin on January 16th (next week Tuesday).
The Senior Seminar Course
During the Advisory period last week, past graduates served as a panel for our juniors and seniors. While the current students learned from the experience, it confirmed that they still have many questions and uncertainties with regard to their future paths. Juniors left still asking, "How do I choose a major, a college, the military, or what if I want to go straight to a job?" Or, "Will the career I pick allow me to have the lifestyle I want?" The Senior Seminar course is set up to guide students through this process along with addressing many more life skills. They will receive help with the college application process, job hunting skills, apartment life, and goal setting. Students will also create a financial plan including understanding the FAFSA, taxes, insurance, credit card debt, and budgeting. We encourage all students to take the Senior Seminar course--it will help them to be confident and ready for further education and the workplace after they graduate from Oregon High School.

Dane County Youth Survey:
Since 1980, every three years, over 20,000 Dane County youth in grades 7-12 are surveyed regarding their opinions, concerns, attitudes, behavior and experiences. The data provide educators, community agencies, parents, policy makers and funding bodies important information that they use for program development, grant writing and for public policy. The Dane County Youth Survey will be conducted at OHS during the week of February 12th.
  • No student names will be collected- the survey is completely confidential
  • Your child has the option to opt out of taking the survey the day of or may skip questions while taking the survey
  • Participation is voluntary. The inclusion of every student is appreciated, however if you prefer that you son of daughter not participate you may communicate this to Patty Shackleton at [email protected]. Please provide opt out information by February 10th.
  • Parents may review the survey in a hard copy format at Oregon High School Student Services Office by contacting a counselor (see contacts to the left).
  • If you have other questions about this survey please contact Jim Pliner, principal.

Hard copies of the 2018 survey are available for viewing at the Oregon High School Student Services Office located at 456 N. Perry Parkway Oregon WI. Please feel free to contact Student Serves (numbers are presented to the left of this newsletter).  Functions are built into the 2018 survey allowing students who are not sexually active or alcohol/drug involved to skip these sections of the survey.
Here are some of the ways the 2015 DCYS results were used:
  • Students participating in the by Youth For Youth grant project used the data to establish funding priorities and to allocate over $30,000 to youth serving agencies.
  • Public Health Madison & Dane County analyzed factors influencing student truancy and school engagement to help school districts make informed policy decisions.
  • The Dane County Homeless Coalition used the data to launch the Make Room for Youth initiative resulting in public education about youth homelessness and the County's first ever homeless shelter exclusively for youth.
  • United Way of Dane County continued its Achievement Connections initiative with partner school districts, including the Oregon School District, to improve high school achievement and graduation rates.
  • The Oregon School District used the data to launch a comprehensive strategy to address student mental health issues that impact learning.
  • School districts throughout the county used the data in classroom discussions, to track youth trends and to address underage drinking at town hall meetings.
