Back to the land: are young farmers the new starving artists?

By: Lucia Graves for The Guardian
Bucking the trend, "millennial farmers" are increasing in number. These young farmers face enormous challenges but " the reality of life on the land isn’t as simple as they had hoped."

What drives these young people to choose farming and how are they different than their predecessors?

Ask your farmer when they started farming and how they made that choice, and read the article here .
Big Y World Class Market Gives Back
Berkshire Grown is very lucky to be the 1st recipient of the Big Y Community Bag Program!

Each time a shopper purchases a reusable Community Bag at the Big Y World Class Market  in Great Barrington Jan 14 - Jan 31, Big Y will donate $1 to Share the Bounty - Berkshire Grown's win-win project that supports farmers by purchasing CSA farm shares and donating the farm-fresh food to local food pantries and kitchens.

Big Y has long been a supporter of local food and farmers and is an ardent supporter of Berkshire Grown. Thanks for choosing Berkshire Grown and for your help in keeping farmers farming!
Recycle your Christmas Tree and Make Goats Happy!
The goats at Dandelion Hill Farm in Sheffield would love to put your Christmas tree to use.

The goats find them to be tasty treats and the trees help keep the goats healthy!

Call with questions (413-229-6083) or drop off your tree at 204 Hulett Hill Rd, Sheffield, MA (you will see the pile near the green house). The goats thank you, and the farmers will thank you for doing a little shopping at the farm store.
Local Farmer Awards Make a Difference for a Local Dairy
Established by Harold Grinspoon in 2015, the Local Farmer Awards provide farms in the Western Massachusetts region up to $2,500 to fund infrastructure improvements.

Cricket Creek won one of these awards and invested in a more efficient and cost-effective heating system and pasteurization vat.

Find our more about Cricket Creek's award here and the Local Farmer Awards here .
