The 2017 Community Mission Appeal to Kick Off Pentecost Sunday, June 4
When we let God's love open the door to our church and our hearts, transformative ministry begins. Episcopalians throughout the Diocese of Louisiana have opened doors to feed the hungry, revitalize neighborhoods stricken by poverty, minister to strangers and prisoners, educate children, care for senior citizens, and so much more. All of us can participate in these missions in different ways. Many of us can donate our time and effort. All of us can offer up our prayers and make a financial donation in some amount, small or large.
The Community Mission Appeal - or CMA - is dedicated to taking our diocese's mission beyond the physical walls of our churches. One hundred percent of the gifts received through CMA will go directly to churches in the Episcopal Diocese of Louisiana in the form of grants to support the development and continuing strength of mission work.

The 2017 Gaudet Community Grant Awards Announced
The Gaudet Committee announced the awarding of the 2017 community grants. The Gaudet Community Grant provides funding for not-for-profit agencies that create, manage, and expand educational opportunities for African American children within the Diocese of Louisiana.
The Episcopal Diocese of Louisiana is proud to honor the legacy of Mrs. Frances Joseph Gaudet, a turn-of-the century educator and activist. Mrs. Gaudet had the wisdom to leave her trust to the Episcopal Church in such a way that her mission would continue to find new ways of expression in changing times. Mrs. Gaudet dedicated her life to building alliances with people of every race and class. The Episcopal Diocese of Louisiana is committed to keeping her purpose alive.

For Such a Time as This: A Call to Prayer, Fasting, and Advocacy
Episcopal Church Presiding Bishop Michael Curry and Presiding Bishop Elizabeth Eaton of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) have issued a joint statement calling for prayer, fasting and advocacy.
The statement, For Such a Time as This: A Call to Prayer, Fasting, and Advocacy, calls for fasting on the 21st of each month through December 2018, at which time the 115th Congress will conclude.
The 21st of each month is targeted because by that time each month, 90% of SNAP (formerly food stamp) benefits have been used, thereby causing the last week of the month as the hungry week in America.

Episcopal Church Presiding Bishop Curry's Video Leads Worldwide Prayer Campaign
Thy Kingdom Come
On May 25, Episcopal Church Presiding Bishop and Primate Michael B. Curry leads the Thy Kingdom Come videos for the Worldwide Anglican Communion.
Thy Kingdom Come is a campaign initiated by Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby calling for prayer by individuals, congregations and families.
Thy Kingdom Come is a global prayer movement that invites Christians around the world to pray between Ascension Day - May 25 - and Pentecost - June 4 - for more people to come to know Jesus. #ThyKingdomCome

Clergy Transitions
The Rev. Bobby Hadzor
was ordained to the Sacred Order of Deacons on Wednesday, May 17 at St. Augustine's, Metairie. He will serve as a deacon at St Augustine's, as well as continue to work as the chaplain at Trinity Episcopal School in New Orleans. Later this year he will be ordained to the Sacred Order of Priests.

The Rev. Mitch Smith has accepted a call to serve as rector of St. Martin's-in-the-Fields, Columbia, South Carolina. He has served as associate rector of Trinity Church, New Orleans since 2011. He will begin his new call on Sunday, July 5.
Deacon John Holbert retired as deacon of St. Philip's Church, New Orleans, on Sunday, May 7. He has served at St. Philip's since 2005.

The Episcopal Church Women to Hold 130th Annual Gathering
ECW: Embrace the Community & World
The Episcopal Church Women of the Diocese of Louisiana will hold the 130th ECW Annual Gathering at St. Augustine's, Metairie, June 2-3, 2017. The theme this year is: "ECW - Embrace the Community and World." The Scripture focus comes from the Gospel of Matthew, "I was a stranger and you welcomed me." (Matt. 25:35B) Indeed, all are welcome to join us at the Annual Gathering for Christian fellowship, worship, learning and fun! So, do not be a stranger; embrace and celebrate with us the divine spark that God gives to each of us.
The Rev. William Miller, a popular author and rector of Christ Church, Covington, will be Saturday's keynote speaker. Miller is the author of The Gospel According to Sam and The Beer Drinker's Guide to God. He is a dynamic speaker, innovator, and Jazz enthusiast who recently moved to Louisiana following tenures at churches in the Dioceses of Texas and Hawaii.

75th Anniversary of St. Martin's, Metairie
On Sunday, April 30, St. Martin's, Metairie, celebrated the 75th anniversary of the founding of the church. It was a stormy day but that did not dampen the spirit. An outdoor picnic was still held in the parking lot under a tent. Music was provided by Marshland.

Deacon's Retreat
The deacon's of the diocese meet at Solomon Episcopal Conference Center for their annual retreat. A discussion developed on growing the diaconate in the diocese and how to share the stories of the many ministries that the deacons are involved with in their communities. Addiction Recovery Ministry Kicking Off a Monthly Blog Post
by Deacon Jay Albert, Convener of the Addiction Recovery Ministry
Welcome to our opening monthly article for the Addiction Recovery Ministry, ARM, of the Diocese of Louisiana. We hope to shine a light on a subject that is not a pleasant one to acknowledge. Addiction, whether by alcohol or drugs, is truly at epidemic proportions in our country. According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, approximately 23.5 million Americans aged 12 or older suffer from drug or alcohol abuse in 2011. This is roughly the population of Texas. The 10% of Americans involved in active addiction affect another 50% of the population as friends and family.
This means that 6 out of 10 people everywhere, this means our churches too, are dealing with addiction in one form or another. It is a subject spoken about in whispers and closed rooms. People are ashamed of admitting alcoholism or drug addiction is in their family or that they are in recovery from this disease. Alcoholism and addiction are defined as a brain disease in the Diagnostic Statistics Manual as well as the American Society of Addiction Medicine.
Each month we will offer some educational information regarding addiction and its many forms as well as links to other sources of information about this subject. There will be a discussion of some resources available to those here in Louisiana and recommended reading and viewing for more help. Over the next few months, we will update our website information to include these links and contact people. In the meantime, you can access our information at
