Fighting for Our Town – Fighting for Our Country
Chairman's Message

Dear Radnor Republicans and Friends:

Great news!  Ten talented Radnor Republicans have stepped up to run for public office and to serve you and our community through good governance and by helping to create a more effective and more efficient local government.

I have pride and admiration for each of our fellow Radnor Residents who have chosen to serve us: Kat Copeland for District Attorney; Steve Gerber for Delaware County Court of Common Pleas; School Board Candidates Chuck Madden (incumbent), Mike Miller (incumbent), Laura Foran, Matt Mabe, and Ben Sydnes; and Township Commissioner Candidates Bill Morrissey (Ward 1), Tim Lowry (Ward 3), and Tim Frey (Ward 7).
The talent and character of these individuals is evident in their profiles below. Many of them are already known to you through their service to Radnor and their active participation in many community events.

Like me, you are probably saying to yourself, “Wow, I really admire those who choose to serve their community in a selfless manner – how can I help?” Glad you asked!

  • Vote for these outstanding individuals in the May 21st Primary and the November 5th General Election. Mark your calendars now.

  • Help get out the vote by sponsoring an event at your home or walking the candidates around your neighborhood to introduce them to your neighbors or by or volunteering some time to assist on or before election day.

  • Donate to their campaigns. It costs money to run a local campaign, and many of these selfless candidates reach into their own pocket to help finance their campaigns – to serve you. But they also rely on contributions from concerned citizens. Help them out with a donation today by visiting www.RadnorGOP.org and clicking on the yellow “Donate” button.

The Radnor Republican Committee is actively sponsoring a spring “clean-up” event at the Willows Park on Saturday March 30 th from 9 am to 12 noon. Please join us and our candidates in Keeping Radnor Beautiful, a real grass roots effort! Our own Austin Hepburn models the tools and attire of the trade in the announcement below. Austin has been a big advocate for the stewardship of our community resources, and he will be helping to lead the effort at the Willows on the 30 th.

In 2019 and beyond, our local government faces many challenges and opportunities, our candidates will help shape our county, township and school district governments to be more effective in serving the taxpayers and stakeholders and in managing and applying the limited resources of our governing bodies. The have earned our support in the campaign ahead.

Meet Our Township Commissioner Candidates
Bill Morrissey, Ward 1 Commissioner

For First Ward Commissioner, Bill Morrissey will be seeking election to a first term. Bill is a graduate of Villanova Law School and has an MBA from Temple University and a Bachelor’s degree from New York University. He serves as Associate General Counsel at FIS Global (formerly SunGard), where he works on legal matters including technology licensing, data security and privacy, regulatory compliance, mergers and acquisitions and other general corporate matters. Previously, he worked as an associate in the Business and Finance department of the law firm of Ballard Spahr, LLP in Philadelphia, and he was a law clerk to a federal judge, the Honorable Louis C. Bechtle of the Eastern District of Pennsylvania. Bill and his wife, Caren, have lived in Radnor for the last 14 years with their three children. Bill hopes to deepen his family’s commitment to Radnor through service on our Board of Commissioners.
Tim Lowry, Ward 3 Commissioner

For Third Ward Commissioner, Tim Lowry will be seeking election to a first term. Tim is an Assistant Vice President and Regional Manager with Trident Mortgage Company. A graduate of Villanova University, Tim and his wife, Catherine, whom he met there, have been Radnor residents for over twenty-five years. They have six children. Four are graduates of Radnor High School with two more to go. Tim is both vested and visible in the community, and looks forward to serving his fellow township residents by working respectfully and thoughtfully with his fellow Commissioners.
Tim Frey, Ward 7 Commissioner

For Seventh Ward Commissioner, Tim Frey will be seeking election to a first term. Tim is an attorney at the Ardmore based law firm of Keenan Cohen & Merrick, where he practices general civil litigation in courts throughout the country, advises corporate and individual clients on various matters, and represents creditors in bankruptcy cases. He also currently serves on the Radnor Township Design Review Board. Tim met his wife, Kristel (Radnor High School 2004) at Flip and Bailey’s while in his final year at Villanova Law School; they are expecting their second child in July. Neighbors often find Tim in his driveway on Williams Road working on one of many projects for the house. Tim has a unique ability to work with people of differing backgrounds, beliefs, and ideas to resolve issues which may come before the Board of Commissioners. He believes it is important to listen carefully and work collaboratively with others to find progressive solutions to the matters confronting our community.

Meet Our School Board Candidates
Chuck Madden (Incumbent)

Chuck Madden, will be seeking his seventh term as School Board Director. Chuck’s deep institutional knowledge, wisdom, and perspective have proven invaluable over the many years of his dedicated service to Radnor’s schools. He has taken a Board leadership role in following Federal and Commonwealth legislative initiatives. Chuck is a lifelong Radnorite, who graduated from Radnor High School in 1971, and then sent his sons through Radnor schools. Prior to his recent retirement, Chuck spent 15 years with the Delaware County Intermediate Unit as a secondary math teacher; autistic support teacher; and in the Prison Education Program as a special education teacher. Chuck is devoted to consistency in and access to excellence for all Radnor students.
Mike Miller (Incumbent)

For Radnor Township School District Director, incumbent Mike Miller, will be seeking reelection to a second term. In 2015, Mike was elected to the Radnor School Board to restore the Board to a fully functioning, respectful organization which plans responsibly for the District’s future. Notably, Mike has been appointed by Republican and Democrat Board Presidents to negotiate every contract Radnor has with our seven labor groups, where he has provided support for teachers and employees, while providing fiscal certainty for the long-term. Mike moved to Radnor as a child, and graduated from Radnor High School in 1993. His companies are in Radnor; Mike is Treasurer of The Philadelphia Investment Banking Company and President of Valley Forge Administrative Services, Inc., which provide financial consulting and litigation support. Beyond School Board, Mike is very active in community leadership, where he served as President of the North Wayne Protective Association and was a long-time soccer coach for his daughters, one each now in Radnor High School and Radnor Middle School.
Laura Foran

For Radnor Township School District Director, Laura Foran will be seeking election to a first term. Laura is Radnor-raised, Radnor-educated, Radnor-employed, and a Radnor parent. A 1979 graduate of Radnor High School, she then attended Cabrini College, but is perhaps best known for her 17 years at Radnor Middle School, including seven years as president of the Radnor Educational Support Professionals Association. An active volunteer in the educational community since 2005, Laura has most recently served as a Core Team Member of the RTSD Strategic Planning Committee and on the Sleep Study Committee. If elected, Ms. Foran plans to retire as a District employee.
Matt Mabe

For Radnor Township School District Director, Matt Mabe will be seeking election to a first term. Matt is a director at TAPS, a national nonprofit organization which serves the families of America’s military fallen. Originally from Louisiana, Matt is a graduate of West Point, and a veteran of three tours in Iraq and Afghanistan. He has since earned graduate degrees from both Columbia, in journalism, and Harvard, in public policy. Matt’s wife, Megan Roberts Mabe, is a multi-generational Radnorite, a family tradition Matt is proud to continue. His older daughter will begin at Radnor Elementary School next year, so his interest in keeping our schools top notch is personal and forward-focused.
Ben Sydnes

For Radnor Township School District Director, Ben Sydnes will be seeking election to a first term. Ben attended the school district beginning in Ithan Elementary School and graduated from Radnor High School in 2005. After graduating from Temple University and working elsewhere, Ben returned home to Radnor with his wife and daughter, a future Radnor student. Ben served on the Citizens’ Advisory Committee for the District and continues to serve as part of the Technology Committee, bringing his industry background and knowledge of training technology to bear in this critical area.

Meet Our Judicial Candidates
Steve Gerber, Delaware County Court of Common Pleas Judge

For judge of the Court of Common Pleas of Delaware County, longtime Radnor resident and former Director and President of the Radnor Township School District Steve Gerber will be seeking a first term. Steve is a member of the law firm Cozen O'Connor where he has practiced since 1992. Steve’s practice is focused on litigating property damage matters. He is an experienced civil trial lawyer and litigator in state and federal courts. A member of the Delaware County Bar Association, Steve regularly serves as a civil arbitrator in the Delaware County Court of Common Pleas and has served on the Bar Association Legal Services for the Poor and Pro Bono Steering Committee. Currently, he serves on the Board of the Center for Resolutions.

Kat Copeland, Delaware County District Attorney

As a graduate of The Baldwin School, Bryn Mawr College and Temple University's Beasley School of Law, Ms. Copeland has a distinguished 25-year prosecutorial career. Throughout the past six years she has been a member of the United States Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania assigned to its Narcotics and Organized Crime Section. District Attorney Copeland previously served for 19 years in the Delaware County District Attorney's Office.

District Attorney Copeland's tenure in the District Attorney 's Office began in 1992 as an Assistant District Attorney during which time she was assigned to the office's trial division, as well as its drug task force. In 2000, she became chief of drug enforcement overseeing the investigation and prosecution of these cases countywide and the office's newly established Criminal-Terrorism Unit coordinating with local, state and federal law enforcement to evaluate matters linked to national security concerns. In 2004, District Attorney Copeland rose to the position of Deputy District Attorney while continuing to supervise and manage the office's terrorism-intelligence concerns, as well as its drug enforcement efforts.

Local Focus : Clean Up at the Willows

Radnor residents will be cleaning up The Willows Park on Saturday, March 30, from 9 AM until noon .

Invasive vines have taken over large parts of the property and removing these vines during the early spring dormant season is best. John Hosbach, the Township Arborist, will guide the volunteers on how to eradicate these unwanted weeds. There will be other activities, such as trash clean up and general pruning and detailing planting beds. Bring your friends and family.

Wear work gloves and safety glasses (as demonstrated by Austin Hepburn to the right). Bring your favorite tool. Meet neighbors and make new friends.

Together, let’s keep Radnor beautiful!
Local Focus : Willows Park Mansion

Ward 6 Commissioner Abel highlights a pending significant issue before the Board of Commissioners – that of the disposition of the historic “mansion” in Willows Park. For those new to the issue, the mansion does not meet building codes and has been unusable for many years. The Township has agreed to enter into a partnership with the Willows Park Preserve (WPP), a private organization whose goal it is to preserve and operate the mansion as a community resource, and the Township has obligated $1.8 million to the partnership to help restore the facility. WPP goals are admirable, but the township taxpayers may be on the hook for significant long-term liabilities if WPP is not successful in raising private funds. WPP made a presentation to the Board of Commissioners on February 25th, and you can watch that presentation here , view the presentation materials here , and read an article about the meeting here .

Comments from Commissioner Abel: The Willows Park Preserve updated the township and residents on the project to renovate the house at the Willows, for which the township in 2017 authorized $1.7 million (and a subsequent $100k) towards the project. WPP estimated the cost to complete the project is an estimated $6 million, which means the group will have to raise an additional $3+ million. The group has requested a couple changes to the lease, including taking the lease from 10 to 29 years, as well as allowing the project to occur in phases, which means they would likely not have raised the full amount when they start the project. I am interested in hearing from Ward 6 neighbors on whether they would support these changes to the current lease.

Local Focus : Former Radnor Commissioners Prez Phil Ahr pleads guilty in child porn case

Remember, the Democrats on the Radnor Board of Commissioners would not ask Ahr to resign after his vile behavior was uncovered. He now faces up to 60 years in prison.
