President's Message

Goodbye 2018. Hello 2019. Happy Birthday to all our horses. Babies no longer, now young men (or colts) and women (or fillies). This is an exciting time of year as our athletes begin to mature in leaps and bounds. Like watching your children in their teenage years!

Racing Across the Country

It seems after Breeders' Cup weekend, stakes action slows down across the nation for a while. South Carolina farm and training center graduates were able to still find the winner's circle following eight stakes races.

On November 22, Matty's Magnum proved best in the Winter Memories S. at Aqueduct. In a race taken off the turf and run on the main track, Matty's Magnum had one beat for the opening ¾'s of a mile. In the final quarter, she moved inside to the rail and in a determined effort, got up to win by a nose. This filly came up through Travis Durr's breaking program at the Webb Carroll Training Center in St. Matthews, SC.

The next day, November 23, Princess Warrior came from the back in the Mrs. Revere G2 at Churchill Downs. Seventh early on, she came four wide in the turn for home and reached the finish line first winning by a length. Princess Warrior is a product of Cary Frommer's operation in Aiken, SC.

It is not often a filly breaks her maiden in a stakes race but that is just what Liora did in the Golden Rod S. G2 at Churchill Downs on November 34. Liora broke fastest of all as the longest shot on the board and would not be denied while pressed throughout. Liora, a graduate of Franklin "Goree" Smith's breaking program at the Elloree Training Center, won by a nose.

Victory Rally, another Webb Carroll Training Center grad, proved best in the Geisha S. at Laurel Park also on November 24. Fifth early on, Victory Rally was able to find a path on the rail, made the lead in upper stretch and held off the competition hitting the wire a neck in front.

Maximus Mischief extended his record to 3 for 3 capturing the Remsen S. G2 at Aqueduct on December 1. Cary Frommer bought this colt as a yearling and pinhooked him into the Timonium sale last May. While stalking the leader early on, he then disputed the pace to the half-mile pole. In the stretch, Maximus Mischief showed who was boss. He crossed the finish line 2 ¼ lengths in front.

On December 8, Henley's Joy rebounded from a subpar effort in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf overwhelming the opposition in the Pulpit S. at Gulfstream Park. Sent off as the favorite, he was mid-pack during the early stages of the race. Henley's Joy found his way to the front at the top of the stretch and left all others behind drawing away to a 4 ½ length lead at the wire. He also is a product of Cary Frommer's program.

Money Fromheaven was in no hurry early on in the Maryland Juvenile Filly Championship S. at Laurel Park on December 8. While five wide at the top of the stretch, she found her best stride and came flying down the lane to win by a neck. She learned her early lessons under the watchful eye of "Goree" Smith.

Clever Serve, a graduate of Brad Stauffer and Ron Stevens' Legacy Stable in Aiken, trailed the field for the first half-mile in the She's All In S. at Remington Park on December 16. She entered the stretch five wide and circled the field coming home 1 ½ lengths in front.

We congratulate all the stakes winners who began their training careers in South Carolina. We also congratulate their connections. A special congratulations and thanks goes out to the staffs at our farms and training centers.

Thoroughbred Owners Meet with Aiken Legislators

South Carolina Department of Agriculture Equine Specialist Marsha Hewitt joined thoroughbred owners December 19 at the iconic Green Boundary Club in Aiken to meet with House of Representatives Bill Taylor and Bill Hixon. Discussion centered on  the necessity of including horse racing
in any upcoming bills on sports betting.  Attending the luncheon meeting were Suzy Haslup, Jack Sadler, Dr Douglass Berry, Allan Monat and Cam Glenn, luncheon host.

A lively discussion ranged from the economic impact of the racing industry to the necessity to promote racing in South Carolina.   Attendees felt a good impression was made on the House members both of whom are horse-friendly.  Bill Hixon actively shows cutting horses while Bill Taylor is a horse show dad and granddad.  The group provided a lot of information and answered questions for the legislators.

Rep. Taylor pointed out that passing legislation is not easy.  His ultimate suggestion was to hire a pollster while putting together a grassroots, statewide effort to educate people about racing.  He emphasized the need for horsemen to personally contact their legislators.  Support for forming a SC Horse Racing Commission is growing. The group will be in touch with legislators as the session begins and SCTOBA members will be informed of developments before the February meeting.

Twenty-Three Graded Stakes Winners

In 2018, twenty-three graduates from South Carolina farms and training centers won Graded Stakes. This is an achievement we can all be proud of.

Travis Durr's Webb Carroll Training Center led the way with nine. Abel Tasman, a finalist for Older Dirt Filly earned two Grade 1 victories - the Ogden Phipps S. at Belmont Park and the Personal Ensign at Saratoga. Spring Quality was also a Grade 1 winner capturing the Woodford Reserve S. on the grass at Belmont Park. Grade 2 winners include Backyard Heaven (Alysheba S. at Churchill Downs), Sue's Fortune (Adirondack S. at Saratoga) and Hembree (Nearctic S. at Woodbine). Grade 3 Stakes winners include Irish War Cry (Pimlico Special), Gamble's Ghost (Trillium S. and Ontario Matron S. both at Woodbine), Harlan Punch (Philip H. Iselin S. at Monmouth Park) and Firenze Fire (Dywer S. at Belmont Park and Gallant Bob S. at PARX).

Franklin "Goree" Smith's Elloree Training Center had six Graded Stakes winners emerge from his operation. The leader of the pack was Promises Fulfilled who captured four Graded Stakes. He was the best in the Grade 1 H. Allen Jerkins S. at Saratoga. Promises Fulfilled also captured two Grade 2's - the Fountain of Youth S. at Gulfstream and the Phoenix S. at Keeneland . This colt also won the Grade 3 Amsterdam at Saratoga.

Another Grade 1 winner was Carrick who crossed the finish line first in the Secretariat S. at Arlington Park.

Two Grade 2 winners include Are You Kidding Me in the Eclipse S. at Woodbine and Liora in the Golden Rod S. at Churchill Downs.

Also from out of Elloree were Mr. Freeze who captured the Grade 3 West Virginia Derby at Mountaineer Park and Farrell who proved best in the Grade 3 Shuvee S. at Saratoga.

An alumnus of Jane Dunn's Holly Hill program is Synchrony. He starred in four Graded Stakes in 2018 - the Grade 1 Red Bank S. at Monmouth Park, the Grade 2 Muniz Memorial Handicap at Fair Grounds, the Grade 3 Fair Grounds Handicap and the Grade 3 Oceanport S. also at Monmouth Park.

Cary Frommer conducts a very successful pinhooking operation out of Aiken. She had four graduates win Graded Stakes in 2018. Still Having Fun (Woody Stephens S. at Belmont Park), Concrete Rose (Jessamine S. at Keeneland), Princess Warrior (Mrs. Revere at Churchill Downs) and Maximus Mischief (Remsen S. at Aqueduct) were all Grade 2 winners.

On the jump scene, Show Court, owned by South Carolina resident Mark Byck and trained in Camden by Arch Kingsley, won the Grade 1 A.P Smithwick Memorial at Saratoga. Another Grade 1 winner over jumps was Balance the Budget trained by South Carolina-based Julie Gomena. Balance the Budget captured the Marion DuPont Colonial Cup in Camden.

Eclipse Award Finalists

Three Eclipse Award finalists have South Carolina connections. Monomoy Girl is a finalist for Horse of the Year and 3-Year-Old Filly. This filly is out of Drumette who was campaigned by Cot Campbell's Dogwood Stable. In 2018, she won 6 of 7 races earning $2,818,200 for the year. This past year, she won five Grade 1's - the Ashland S., Kentucky Oaks, Acorn S., Coaching Club American Oaks and Breeders' Cup Distaff. Stuart Grant, owner of the Camden Training Center, is a member of the ownership group.

Abel Tasman, the 2017 Champion 3-Year-Old Filly, is a finalist in 2018 in the Older Dirt Filly division due to victories in the Grade 1 Ogden Phipps and Personal Ensign stakes. She learned her early lessons from Travis Durr at his Webb Carroll Training Center.

Weston Hamilton who rides on the Maryland circuit has been named as a finalist in the Apprentice Jockey category. He prepared for his racing career as a jockey at "Goree" Smith's Elloree Training Center. Hall of Fame jockey Chris Antley also had his groundwork laid there. The Eclipse Awards will be held Thursday, Jan. 25 at Gulfstream Park.
