CAPA officially Welcomed 10 New Members at the New Member Luncheon on December 6th. We are happy to have each one as part of the association and look forward to each organization in the future.   These new members are: Lightwaves, LLC, Rose Paving, LLC, The Town of Mead, The City of Gunnison, City of La Junta, Intertek- PSI, Trax Construction, Kraemer, NA,  Bowman Consulting, and Lightfield Enterprises.    CAPA has grown to 258 member organizations, the largest state asphalt pavement association in the country!!  
2018  "Member of the Year" 
John Cheever, Quality Control Manager - Asphalt & Aggregates for Aggregate Industries, Congratulations to John Cheever as our 2018 Member of the Year.  John graduated from CSU with a B.S. in Construction Management in 1989.  He began work at Aggregate Industries in 1993 as a technician. With 25 years of service, John has not only shaped the industry through service to CAPA, CDOT, and local municipal committees, but he has developed many of our future leaders.  Everyone recognizes John's positive outlook on life, congenial attitude, and commitment to problem-solving - he is a highly valued leader and mentor within the Aggregate Industries family and the industry.
CAPA Member Generosity - The Season of Giving! 

At the December 6
th New Member luncheon the attendees donated more than $700 to be split between the Wounded Warriors project and the 
Food Bank of the Rockies. Thank you for all who made these generous donations to support the two great causes.
 
The Fall 2019 edition of the CAPA news magazine "The Road Ahead" is available.  It was published as an insert in the Fall/Winter 2019 Colorado Public Works Journal.  The publication can be downloaded from the CAPA website.  Additional copies can be obtained by  contacting the CAPA Office.  The magazine provided a highlight of 2018 projects, asphalt recipients of the 2018 APWA Colorado Chapter Awards, and a focus on the success in using asphalt pavement in the Town of Castle Rock.

"Roads of Colorado" calendar 
is available from the CAPA Office. A copy has been sent to all member companies with their 2019 dues renewal notices. If you would like additional copies  contact our office and let us know how many you would like to receive.  A highlight of the calendar are great photos of asphalt paving and completed projects from around the state.  
"Best in Colorado"  Asphalt Pavement Awards - Update  
51 projects have been nominated for the 25th Annual  "Best in Colorado" Asphalt Awards Program.  The Award Judge Team have nearly completed the site inspections and will make recommendations in January for the projects to receive awards.  Link to map of the project locations
CDOT News  CDOT
Congratulations to CDOT Region 4 for receiving the prestigious Director's Cup for 2018.  Region 4 RTD Johnny Olson accepted the award at the December 13 Commission Meeting from CDOT Executive Director Mike Lewis.  In announcing the award, Mr. Lewis made mention of the efforts of Region 4 to deliver over $700 M in flood recovery projects since 2013.      
CDOT has provided industry with a
Construction Year 2019 Project List .  The list includes 88 projects and totals $279,400,577.  A majority of the projects are expected to be advertised by January 1 with October being the high month with $80.6 M to be advertised.     

New Commissioner for Arapahoe & Douglas Counties   Jesus Pulido, has been appointed by Governor Hickenlooper as the newest Transportation Commissioner.  Mr. Pulido represents District 3 - Arapahoe and Douglas counties and replaces Luella D'Angelo.    

 

Technical Task Force Schedule set for Fall/Winter/Spring 2018-2019  The Asphalt Industry Forum (AIF) effort is in full swing.  Our most recent meeting was held on December 6.  Listed below are the meeting dates for the coming season.  To be added to the meeting notice list, contact Tom Clayton.    

    • AIF Interim Meeting #2, 1pm - 3pm, Tuesday, Feb. 26, CDOT N. Holly.
    • AIF Close Out Meeting, 1pm - 3pm, Brannan Sand & Gravel, Lipan.

Congratulations to Grant Cruseturner from Brannan Sand and Gravel
who was appointed by Brannan and elected to the CAPA Board of Directors at the December Board meeting. Grant is a Project Manager/ Estimator at Brannan and is very involved in industry issues from local agencies to CDOT. Welcome Grant to the CAPA BoD!  Grant replaces Jimmy Marvel who served on the Board from 2007 - 2018.   
2019 Local Agency Pavement Condition and Funding Report.   
As 2018 comes to a close, CAPA is busy collecting  Local Agency Pavement Condition and Funding information for 2019.  Survey forms are being sent this week, or you can download the survey form here and email your response back to Mike Skinner , CAPA's Director of Pavement Engineering.  Your quick response is much appreciated (January 4, 2019).  The 2018 report presented data from 71 Colorado cities and counties from across the state and continues to be a valuable planning tool for Public Works staff and Local Agency Managers.  The 2019 report will be released on January 9th, 2019 available for free download on the CAPA website and highlights and trends from the report will be presented during the  2019 Industry Outlook webinar  planned for January 9.   
Asphalt Pavement Association of New Mexico (APANM) represented at CAPA Board Meeting!
Brian Jones and Sterling Hamilton of Hamilton Construction attended the CAPA Board of Directors meeting on December 6th. APANM is doing great work in New Mexico and it was great to have both Brian and Sterling at the meeting.

CAPA mourns the loss of former President Rick Hobbs   On Saturday December 1, 2018 former CAPA President and long time industry member Rick Hobbs passed away. His memorial service was held   on Saturday, December 15th in Fort Collins.   
Rick was instrumental in the establishment of the LabCAT Program and in growing the association.   Rick will be inducted into the Colorado Asphalt Hall of Fame (posthumously) on February 27, 2019.  Read more from the obituary.

2018 "Volunteer Examiner (Proctor) of the Year"  Aaron Klingsmith from Ground Engineering was selected as the 2018 Proctor of the Year for the LabCAT Program.  Aaron has worked for Ground Engineering for 15 years. He started as a materials testing field technician and has worked in every aspect of materials testing in the construction industry.  He is currently a Project/Construction Manager in the Loveland office.  Aaron has always enjoyed testing asphalt and understands the importance of teaching and investing in the next generation of field and lab technicians. Aaron hopes to continue being a part of the LabCAT program for years to come.

The first Introduction to Process Control/Owner Acceptance (PC/OA) Asphalt Testing Education Course for 2019  will be on Janaury 15 to 18. The complete 2019 schedule is under development and should be published in late November or early December.   Attendee's can attend 1 day or stay all 4 depending on the level of instruction desired.  This course is great for new employees or those interested in cross-training or a refresher.   Lead Instructor:  Cindy Rutkoski   See all of the 2019 Intro to PC/OA Course dates
